If you believe there is no merit whatsoever to another person's positions, there's 3 possibilities as far as I can see:

1. You are not understanding their position.
2. They are being really stupid.
3. They are being disingenuous.

I am having trouble imagining a situation where stating a position has no merit without explanation can be persuasive.

Theres a 4th option: They are ignorant of the facts.

You dont have to be stupid or disingenuous to honestly believe something that in truth has no basis. You just have to be convinced of it.

I would count a valid argument based on an honest mistake of fact as something with merit. If there's a factual dispute you should be able to talk about it right? And if you don't, you shouldn't expect anyone to be convinced.

I mean, I'm well aware by now that persuasion is not the main reason people talk about politics. But if winning is the goal, maybe it should be.
