The thing I dont understand about this is why the income tax threshold is so high ($1,000,000) but the investment tax threshold is so low ($400,000). Doesnt that investment tax apply to any 401k or IRA that retirees roll over? A million a year is a lot of money, and Im sure no one here would argue with that being taxed.

But, even if I personally have $0 retirement, $400k in a lifetime of working, saving, and investing doesnt sound like that much; especially with insane inflation. It seems like its specifically designed to punish people for trying to save up for retirement, especially in blue states where annual income is higher. I dont even think retiring in CA would be possible with less than $400k from investments, and then the government takes almost half of it?

I know there are the super rich who would be effected by their routine hundred thousand dollar investments, but adding a clause to give retirees a one time leniency seems like it would be a better way to go. Unless Im misunderstanding something here, then Id appreciate someone trying to politely clear it up.

Uh....pretty sure 401K and IRA are always taxed as income. Not sure what you mean by "roll over", though.
And you don't have to withdraw your money all at once. I plan to trickle mine out over years, so on any given year my taxes won't be that high.

No one has ever been able to explain to me why capital gains don't have the same fucking tax brackets as income.
Like, if you have both income and capital gains in a given tax year, you should just be taxed based on the combined total and that's it (gentle reminder that the income/gains are taxed at each graduated tier, so if the 22% rate hits at $100K for example, the income/gains below $100K are not taxed at that rate).

If I take my post-tax income and put it in a certificate of deposit, I get hit w/ INCOME taxes on the interest earned. If I put money into a 401K, when I take it out it is taxed as INCOME (or you do Roth and pay the INCOME tax up front).
But when it's put into the stock market buying stocks directly, all of a sudden it needs a special snowflake super low rate because...reasons.

...Is GameFAQs not also social media?
"Social media" is too broad a term.
I'm sick of going into paragraphs of detail on it, so the short version.

"Legacy" social media like message boards, char rooms, comments sections for articles... Are usually ok. Yes you have hives of scum and villainy like 4chan, but that's the point. You KNOW on some level you're consciously entering a hive of scum and villainy when you go there.

"Viral" social media like TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook is the problem. Their whole model is using algorithms to feed you related content and keep you on their platform and to interact with itself. You could start watching some stuff on woodworking and end up on some alt right pipeline thru "suggested" content all w/o leaving the website you were on. Also basically encourages cross-platform flame wars and drama b/c it generates clicks.

When people complain about "social media" they almost always mean viral social media, exclusively.

Those are my names for the two basic types. And it gets messy w/ stuff like reddit (mixes the two a lot) and youtube (started legacy, turned into viral gradually after google bought it).

How does that happen, exactly? Do a majority of the House have to specifically vote to add it in, or is it really as simple as one dip shit slipping in whatever s/he wants to an existing bill and then the entire House has to accept it or scrap the whole thing?
Cause if the latter, Congress is seriously beyond fucked.
If the former, then at least you know a majority actually specifically wanted this included.

https://apnews.com/article/australia-x-stabbing-church-esafety-commission-d19fa3736cc348043f0979945dd0dea3

An Australian judge on Monday ruled that social media platform X must block every user in the world from accessing video of a bishop being stabbed in a Sydney church, extending the prohibition beyond users in Australia.

X Corp., the tech company rebranded by billionaire Elon Musk when he bought Twitter last year, announced last week it would fight in court Australian orders to take down posts relating to a knife attack on Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel in an Assyrian Orthodox church as a service was being streamed online on April 15.

The material was geoblocked from Australia but remained available elsewhere.

But the regulator that made the orders, Australias eSafety Commission, which describes itself as the worlds first government agency dedicated to keeping people safer online, successfully applied to the Federal Court in Sydney for a temporary global ban on the sharing of video of the bishop being stabbed.

In an after-hours hearing, Justice Geoffrey Kennett suppressed the footage from all X users until Wednesday, when an application for a permanent ban will be heard.

X has 24 hours to hide the footage from users, the judge ruled.

The regulators lawyer, Stephen Tran, had argued that geoblocking Australia did not meet the definition of removal of the footage under Australian law.

Tran said the footage was a graphic and violent video that would cause irreparable harm if its continuing to circulate.

Xs lawyer Marcus Hoyne said he had been unable to get instructions from his San Francisco-based client because it was early Monday morning in the United States.

Musk has described eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant as the Australian censorship commissar.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had earlier criticized X for refusing to remove graphic posts about the knife attack on a bishop and priest at the Christ the Good Shepherd Church.

Albanese said social media posts, misinformation and dissemination of violent images had exacerbated suffering from the church attack, which the two clerics survived, as well as a knife attack at a Sydney shopping mall two days earlier which killed six people.

Social media has a social responsibility, Albanese said. I find it extraordinary that X chose not to comply and are trying to argue their case.

The platforms Global Government Affairs team said on Saturday Inman Grant had ordered it to remove some posts that commented on the church attack, but it said the posts did not violate Xs rules on violent speech.

X said the Australian regulator had demanded the platform globally withhold these posts or face a daily fine of $785,000.

X believes that eSafetys order was not within the scope of Australian law and we complied with the directive pending a legal challenge, the Global Government Affairs account said.

While X respects the right of a country to enforce its laws within its jurisdiction, the eSafety Commissioner does not have the authority to dictate what content Xs users can see globally, it said.

We will robustly challenge this unlawful and dangerous approach in court, it added.
The live feed of the church attack and social media posts that followed attracted a crowd of 2,000 people and fueled a riot against police, who barricaded the young suspected attacker inside the place of worship.

The rioting injured 51 police officers and damaged 104 police vehicles, officials said.

Three alleged rioters had been arrested by Sunday and police on Monday released images of 12 suspects they accuse of being the main instigators of the violence, taken from video of the riot.

A 16-year-old boy accused of the stabbings has been charged with terrorism offenses. He has received online condemnation and praise for the attack.

And apparently this isn't the first time something like this happened? Here I was, about to give Elon Musk credit for something, too

https://new.reddit.com/r/news/comments/1caai47/australian_judge_bans_x_from_sharing_video_of/

Twitter has already done this for India back in 2023
In an apparent first, Twitter appears to have withheld a tweet globally in response to a legal demand in India. Journalist and Right to Information (RTI) activist Saurav Das posted a screenshot of two past tweets, one of which appears to quote Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, with a message from the social media platform stating that the content has been withheld in Worldwide.

Not sure if that comment is true, having trouble finding news articles to validate it. But assuming it is...
Curious that Twitter "bent the knee" to India, but is fighting back against Australia.
I don't like the precedent of allowing countries to police what the entire world can post or view on the internet, and saying "geo-blocking isn't enough" is appalling.

You really gotta specify which edition of D&D and Pathfinder.

PF "1E" was D&D 3.5 w/ some common sense rules changes and then a whole lot of dumb shit and utter bloat (for all the criticisms 3E got for "trap options", none of them made you objectively weaker for taking them like some of PF's).
A common criticism of 3E was that casters were too strong, so PF's solution was to...make them even stronger. Like... being a specialist wizard sure is nifty but it's a shame you have to ban two whole schools of magic, then PF came around and was like, "but what if you didn't have to, though?"
It's a rom-hack of the best edition of D&D so even though it's not as good as the original, it's...ok. Just stick to classes w/ a spell list, even if it only goes up to 4th or 6th level spells, and you'll be ok.

PF 2E is entirely it's own thing and I've only heard about it, but it sounds fucking dreadful. Like D&D 4E except the feats and options are even weaker and lamer than in that dumpster fire of a rules set (like instead of a feat to get +2 to some skills, which would already be weak and lame in 3E, now there's feats to situationally get +1 or +2 to a skill or two). I'm actually shocked there's people here saying they like it, they're literally the first people I've ever seen outside of Paizo's (maker of PF) own boards (and even there it's got a lot of detractors) that had good things to say about it. I've seen lots of people online and friends of mine who liked PF 1E and hated D&D 4E all universally say it's even worse than D&D 4E.

Not going to bother talking about D&D, I assume you're familiar with it at least.

It should be enough for a single person to afford a studio apartment, extremely cheap/basic food, basic healthcare (if there's still no Medicare for All, which there should be), plus another 20% for transportation costs, clothing, other stuff.
If it's a family, then enough for like a 2 bedroom apartment and the above for each person.

Basically, it should be just barely enough to survive on, no more. You want nicer home/food/etc... or travel, get a job. Since it's UBI, you keep it if you work.

The amount should be based on median cost of living for the U.S. Higher COL areas like NYC should have to provide supplemental UBI boosts to cover the gap. Basing national UBI on high COL areas is untenable. Can easily become 3x the cost of rural areas, or more.

Isn't the US still maintaining the war in Ukraine to save face as well? I mean the US has already said that it shut down the Istanbul peace deal and maintains the war in Ukraine in order to look tough to China because of long term strategic concerns over Taiwan. So I disagree about the US having nothing to lose.
The US isn't "maintaining" the war.
They didn't shut down peace deals, Ukraine itself doesn't want a hollow peace deal that gives Russia a chance to rebuild and then attack again, since Russia breaks every peace deal when it's convenient for them and the only way to actually have peace is to defeat them decisively militarily.
And... guess I won't add my related commentary to that.

But I agree with everything else you said. The US exploited divisions in Ukraine to start a civil war with the purpose of luring Russia to intervene in the conflict and keeping them bogged down in a costly unwinnable war that would drain their resources and pressure the Russian economy and cause tensions for the Russian regime.
The US didn't start a civil war. Russia tried meddling in and controlling their government and they resisted it. This is just pure lies and propaganda.

The plan is working perfectly so far. The ultimate goal is the collapse of the Russian state. Similar to the way Afghanistan was used to collapse the Soviet Union.
  1. It's not their plan
  2. Their goal was never the collapse of the Russian state. Given the 6000 nukes in Russia, that would be a catastrophe. And for the first year, the West bent over backwards trying to find an "off ramp" for Putin so he could "save face"

Switch copy, so it doesn't "release" for me for a while, still :(

My shipping was only 6 dollars for my backer copy. (In murica'/south carolina).

I'm assuming its based on location+if you order any extras?

I was a 150 dollar tier backer but I don't believe that one comes with too many extra things. Def. was only 6 bucks though.

I technically would have already had this game myself had I actually noticed that e-mail where they asked you to pay for the shipping. I got that e-mail on the 2nd of this month but didn't even notice it until alucard's topic on the 16th, =/ lol.

*I also noticed that my NA backer copy is actually coming from AURORA, IL, via yeteeproduction's shipping partner OSM worldwide.*

It'd imagine this will be a good bit higher if someone is ordering a NA copy but live in canada, south america or something like that.

Yeah, my shipping for a $100 tier (game + soundtrack and some minor stuff) was also $6.
Not too bad, and I effectively didn't pay tax for the game since it was a KS reward, so it semi-cancels out.
I saw it's apparently selling for only $50 on some consoles right from the start, so the fact we dropped $60+ and spent it years ago just to pay more than retail price upsets me a fair bit, though.

I've put about 30 hours into it. Personally I live it. I don't think it will get mainstream appeal though. People who love Suikoden 1&2 will enjoy it, but it has a lot of PS1 JRPG feel to it.

All of you should buy it though. Even if you don't like it. That way I can get a sequel. I appreciate your sacrifice.
Sounds good, thanks. Will be looking forward to playing it while avoiding topics about it since I can't yet and don't want spoilers.

Can Bauer sue the Dodgers for termination of his contract?
Not just the Dodgers, the MLB as a whole.
Fuckers suspended him two entire seasons and that was on top of the 99 games he had already been out at that point when they made the decision!
They effectively ended his career, and forced him to go pitch in another country for massively less pay.

A couple were divorced by mistake after a computer error at a family law firm.

A staff member at Vardag's accidentally opened the file of a couple referred to in court papers as Mr and Mrs Williams, when trying to apply for a final divorce order for a different client.

Vardag's applied three days later to rescind the order but judge Sir Andrew McFarlane dismissed the application.

The firm's head Ayesha Vardag said the judge's decision effectively meant "the computer says no, you're divorced".

The judge's logic is about as sound as Fandom's admins treating literally any picture as potentially hornyposting, so obviously he made the right call.

Reminder for the mods: Reporting news of a legal snafu is NOT POLITICS.

And they fucking banned him retroactively!

Most of them were probably false reports. Especially if it was people reporting the anime thread.

Here's a crazy concept: the more draconian and wide your ToU, the more work it creates for the mods! When you leave shit up to vague concepts like, "well, it offended somebody...." it makes way more innocuous posts open to being moddable. If there were actual reasonable hard lines (no nudity, no insulting other users, etc...) and things were otherwise free reign, the mods' jobs would be a lot easier, and it'd be much simpler to identify people maliciously using the report function to just harass and target other posters and punish them, instead.

But nah....let's do the opposite.

Whats funny is the mods who do this for free could always just ignore things like horny posting, but thats too much to ask for.
One of the supposed reasons for the changes was too much work for the mods (like how CE being one of the biggest sources for moderations was mentioned), so what do they do?
Massively and ludicrously expand the dragnet of what's against the rules, so there's all sorts of previously ok topics and posts that are now being targeted and shut down by the mods.
It's all such fucking bull shit.

Price varies wildly depending on the shape.

A standard size rectangular window, even a fairly large one, is like a few hundred bucks. The labor cost to remove and install is probably close to the material cost.

But once you get fancy w/ circular, rounded, those giant "gallery" view windows that pop out from the siding, etc... shit gets crazy expensive. Like well into the thousands per window.

Even if it's "only" $300 parts and labor b/c it's a basic rectangular window, it still would suck to replace, though.

https://www.thefp.com/p/american-anti-war-activists-cheer?utm_source=tfptwitter

About 300 anti-war activists crowded into the basement of the Teamsters Unions headquarters on Saturday to hear organizers from all over the country describe their plans to disrupt the Democratic National Convention this August. Joe Bidens backing of Israel since Hamass October 7 attack has turned these left-wing radicals against their own party.

Its really inspiring to see that people are just as enthusiastic, and maybe even more enthusiastic, to march on the DNC as they are to march on the RNC, says Omar Flores, a Milwaukee-based activist. We can thank Genocide Joe and our movement for that.

But then a man stumbles to the podium, wiping sweat from his forehead. He grabs the microphone to announce that the Islamic regime of Iran has launched missiles and drones heading straight toward Israel.

They believe that they will be in PalestinianI dont call it Israeliairspace between two and four a.m., which means about two to four hours from now, he says. In addition, there are reports of drones having been fired on Israel from Yemen and Iraq.

The crowd, all wearing black N95s, erupts into applause. Someone in the back lowers their mask to send a celebratory whistle soaring throughout the room.

The man at the podium, Hatem Abudayyeh, heads the U.S. Palestinian Community Network, a purported community group which, on information and belief, is an affiliate of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a designated terror organization based in Gaza, according to a lawsuit over the alleged relations between U.S. advocacy groups and Hamas.

This is when this country and the world needs us because the United States is going to, quote unquote, defend the criminal Israeli state, says Abudayyeh, whose home was raided by the FBI in 2010 as part of an investigation concerning the material support of terrorism.

We have to assume that the United States is going to try to retaliate against Iran.

After the boos and calls of shame subside, Abudayyeh says it is incumbent upon Americans to stop the United States from expanding this war and hitting Iran.

Weve got to be the strong, powerful anti-war movement that we are, he says, placing the microphone down and exiting the stage.

The crowd immediately began chanting, Hands off Iran.

A woman in a hot pink gas mask, wielding a matching neon cane and dressed in a Protect Trans Kids t-shirt, throws her fist in the air. Nearby, a service poodle is taking a nap under the chair of his owner, who is wearing a leather harness over his t-shirt. Then the group that has joined here from cities across AmericaSeattle, Washington, D.C., Los Angelescheers and claps in celebration.

Joe Iosbaker, an organizer with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, which called October 7 a good turn of events in its press release about the terrorist attacks, tells me he supports Iran. His organization has since released a statement backing Iran, where citizens gathered to shout Death to America during their nations strike against Israel Saturday night.

We demand hands off Iran, the statement says. The people have power, and we will exercise it in the streets.

Earlier that day, before news of the attack broke, at a breakout session on the anti-war movement, Shabbir Rizvi, an organizer with Anti-War Committee Chicago, taught participants how to chant death to Israel and death to America in Farsi.

Marg bar Israel, he chanted, leading a group of about 80 attendees along with him. A man draped in a Soviet flag bearing a gold hammer and sickle clapped his hands.

A man in a full black denim outfit shouted out behind his N95Can we get a marg bar America?
We can get a marg bar America, Rizvi replied.

Then Rizvi raised his hand in the air, leading the crowd like a conductor.

Marg bar America, they cheered.

On my way out of the event, I ask a woman smoking a cigarette to fill me in on the latest news regarding Irans lobbing of missiles and drones, which were later intercepted with help from forces from France, the U.S., and the UK. Iran said its strike was retaliation for Israels hit on the Iranian embassy in Syria earlier this month, which destroyed the consulate building next to the embassy and killed two of Tehrans top commanders, and that the matter is concludedunless Israel hits back.

Iran is part of the resistance, said the woman, who flew in that morning from New Orleans, where shes been part of an effort to disrupt Israel-bound shipments in her hometown. Yemen and Iran and Hezbollah, who are also a militant group in Lebanon, and the Syrian government are all parts of the arc of resistance.

A smile creeps across her face as she tells me: Theyre part of the arc of resistance because the enemies are Israel and the USA.
