Planning to get my booster this week.

I read some stuff saying that it's safe to get a different brand than your first time but are there any benefits to doing so, barring obvious things like allergic reactions and whatnot.

looking over your 'plan to watch' list, i would only second the recommendation for the Ghibli and Kon films to prioritize for now but you've mentioned in the past about wanting to watch them chronologically already iirc.

the consequence of being set on your movie having no subtitles is that the plot has to still be relatively straightforward if you don't want to completely alienate everyone who is not well-versed in your language. i actually just don't think the plot is that substantive and i'll agree with your point that many of the characters come off as interchangeable.

interesting point about the nudity. iirc it did come off a bit 'harsh'

the film to me is more about the experience than anything else.

It's Such a Beautiful Day

sorry to Mr. Hertzfelt but I found the narrating voice pretty offputting. and i feel bad because it's not like something you can just change. but anyway it kind of gave the whole film a more lighthearted jokey vibe for me which I wasn't into. I could actually see myself really loving this a few years ago with some of the random out-there lines. as for the existential depressing stuff it's mostly things i've thought about a lot in the past and not very keen to think about again. there was a time when i used to just enjoy wallowing in my misery but as the years go on i'm getting tired.

Not a good sign though that I kept pausing the movie to go randomly check b8 or reddit though. And even though it's just over an hour long, I was glad it wasn't longer. The line about how the grandmother just suddenly imagined throwing the child into the fireplace was probably the first time i thought i could get "in" to the movie because intrusive thoughts are pretty relateable. I do like the blending of animation and live-action and the fact that it takes advantage of that medium though which is always the first thing I look for in an animated film. But yeah maybe if I was in a different place for my first viewing. 5/10

a bit unclear on what i watched but i did overall like it. the music and atmosphere played such a big part and i liked the overall aesthetic. during the early parts i was like ok what is this girl a metaphor for after being reminded of another film and i actually forgot that 'vampires' were a thing. would like to give it a rewatch at some point. 6/10

Saving up for Tanith?

i definitely should start. it would feel so good to be able to +10 her right off the bat if she drops. my wishlist has been in pretty good shape after Malice/Res. Raven. high prio wants now are base Tanith/alt Lucius, Kent, Niime and Cornelia (the only 3H i would care for at this point lol).

i'm now actually at the point where i have most of the units i want who are already in the game so i can more or less focus on saving up for new units who might drop without being tempted to spending orbs on every banner rerun. mostly just want like Nailah, F Berkut and Tibarn now for old units. at like 20 orbs now after going for Malice and Halloween L'Arachel (thankfully came pretty early) but i didn't get a 5 star after the spark on the Malice banner so just said fuck it and spent until I did. got Asc. Fjorm but the hoarder in me won't let myself use the item until i have like two more haha.

thankfully i can just use the letterboxd/imdb genre tags although there were some discrepancies between the two. letterboxd lists Black Swan as Drama/Thriller/Horror but imdb doesn't include the horror tag. imdb has Under the Skin as Drama/Horror/Sci-Fi but letterboxd has it as Drama/Sci-Fi/Thriller.

those are two of my favorite movies but i've never actually thought of Black Swan as a 'horror' and Under the Skin is definitely more of a horror film than it. genre stuff can get pretty wonky in the long run whatever. My list actually ended up looking pretty fucking solid in that they're all film I really like and doesn't have films I only slightly like taking up spots just because of the 'horror' tag like I thought it would.

Under the Skin - absolutely my favorite for the time being. knowing how it was actually filmed and how it comes across in the performances is my favorite aspect of it.
American Psycho - i love how every comment on the youtube video for "It's Hip to Be Square" is just an American Psycho reference
Thirst - favorite vampire film
One Cut of the Dead - i couldn't believe how good this was when i watched it. would have loved to recommend this too for the topic at some point.
Funny Games - fuck
Jennifer's Body - iconic
Alien - it's Alien
Psycho - it's Psycho
mother!
Shaun of the Dead

i will cheat and say in case of alternates/genre wonkiness i could also see Climax, House or Frankenhooker in that list as well

One thing I couldn't help but notice is the long chunks of silence, the first of which honestly made me think something was wrong with my copy of the film.

my reaction too. i actually refreshed the stream and checked my speakers because no sound whatsoever, not even like wind or anything, felt so weird.

Most memorable thing for me will be the WIDE-EYED LOOK of the murderer near the end. it's haunting because he sort of has like a baby face and i just couldn't stop thinking about it.

honestly i was a little bored during the beginning. court scene was great though especially that reveal. enjoyment would most likely increase upon a second watch but i do like being on the conservative side with my scores on first watches. 6/10

well it is time to vote for the next movie. i was honestly hoping i'd be more caught up by the time it came around to my turn which is why i moved myself back but that didn't happen. reminder that THIS WILL BE THE LAST VOTE for the topic. 3 noms from me this time. Providing minimal descriptions and I would recommend going into any of these without looking up anything more.

Secret Sunshine (2007) - Lee Chang-dong: This is a South Korean film by the same director as Burning (2018) about a widow who moves to her husband's small hometown. Features one of the strongest performances by a lead (Jeon Do-yeon) I've ever seen. Available for streaming on Criterion Channel.

Mommy (2014) - Xavier Dolan: This is a French-Canadian film about a mother and her troublesome (to put it lightly) son. The film is shot in a 1:1 aspect ratio. Currently available for streaming on Hulu.

The Tribe (2014) - Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi: This is a Ukranian film about a boy who goes to a deaf boarding school and what he gets up to. The entire film is in Ukranian sign language with no subtitles. Currently available for streaming on kanopy and tubi.

Cut Throat City

I was pretty interested in the premise which is why I initially voted for it over the other choices. Unfortunately it ended up feeling quite lackluster in multiple areas.

I think one of my biggest issue is that for a story with such a specific setting of post-Katrina New Orleans, theres no sense of it aside from them directly mentioning hey were in New Orleans and it makes it feel like another generic crime story. Similarly, theres not too much shown concerning any of the struggles the characters go through besides them simply talking about how broke they are. Theres no particular details to latch on to make it memorable in any way and the characters, while potentially interesting, feel more underdeveloped than anything. Theres actually so many of them that the story becomes convoluted and starts falling apart by the end. T.I. was fun though.

I did not think the acting by the lead actor Moore was great either. Ive actually seen other movies hes been in and iirc he came off a lot better in that so I was a bit disappointed that he came off as having an actually distractingly poor performance to me. Like they make sure to tell us that Andre is his best friend multiple times and when hes killed, his reactions just felt so underwhelming. Not that I think he should be crying all over the place or that its impossible for people to bottle their emotions up similarly to how we are supposed to infer I guess.

Overall its a bit frustrating because of the potential. 5/10 though I could actually see it going down to 4 .
