Moved:

Jak 2 to 19. Beat a platformer

Super Mario Odyssey to 10. Beat a game made by a director/composer/artist/etc that you like

Adding:

9. Beat a remake or enhanced port

Spyro The Dragon (PS4)

The Spyro games are some of my favourite platformers, and this was a very faithful remake to the original, so it successfully scratched the nostalgia itch. Spyro 2 is a top 10 game for me so I'm excited to get to that one.

Speaking of not completing a list, it looks like I'm going to fall just short this year. A combination of being very busy over the last month or so and playing very long games such as RDR 2 has made me unable to complete the 50 on time. I'll probably add a few more in the next week though as I play some shorter games to finish the year.

46. Beat a game that features historical events or people

Red Dead Redemption 2

I'm one of those story over gameplay people, as long as the gameplay itself is still pretty good, which is why this is almost definitely my GOTY, barring God Of War, which I've yet to start, somehow beating it out.

There were parts of the gameplay that I found annoying, but they were almost strictly a quality of life thing and nothing that actively impacted my enjoyment. The story was some of the best that I can remember in a game, and the final chapter along with some of the callbacks to the first game had me almost shedding a few tears.

Gaming is the only medium where I ever even come close to crying. I haven't yet, but I've been on the verge of tears a few times, including here.

You should definitely keep hosting it next year, @Robazoid. If not for you we wouldn't really have this to begin with, and you've done a great job of making sure things have run smoothly even if you've slowly fallen out of playing too many games.

In terms of new categories, I don't have much input. There are categories that I dislike, but that's less because I think they're objectively not good and more because they involve genres/things that I personally dislike.

7. Beat a game in a series you've already played some of

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening

Amazon delayed my shipment of RDR2, so I figured I might as well complete the trilogy while I wait.

So, so much better than the second game, and better than the first game as well. The combat felt good here, the environments were much closer to the first in terms of quality, and there was actually a solid, fleshed out story that made sense.

41. Beat a game with a Metascore below 70

Devil May Cry 2

Finished the story mode with both characters. Wow, this was bad. Everyone says it's bad, but I was expecting a game that maybe wasn't as good as the first one but still decent, which wasn't the case. This was basically "mash triangle to win", combined with lifeless, bland environments, and awful platforming puzzles. I don't think this series is known for it's story, but how did we even get from the ending of the first game to this? I have no idea what's going on here.

I've got RDR2 coming tomorrow, so it'll be awhile before i get to the third and fourth game in the series.

48. Beat a game that starts with the first letter of your username

Devil May Cry

I played a very small portion of this and the second game when I was a kid, and then never played any of them again. I was in the mood for an action game, and I'm intrigued about the new one coming out, so I figured I'd pick up the remastered collection and catch myself up before then.

Solid game overall. I know the second game is considered bad, but I'm still going to go through it. It can't be that bad, right?

34. Beat a game with an animal lead

Pyre

Wow, fantastic game. I remember Giant Bomb talked about it last year, and the idea of Supergiant Games + sports ball definitely piqued my interest. I finally got around to it and was blown away. The sports style gameplay was right up my alley and a bunch of fun, and the other parts of the game were equally as good. I came away from it wanting more, which doesn't happen very often.

The game also had standings and teams and stats, which as a sports fanatic, was everything I didn't know I wanted. Give me more of this type of genre.

I finally finished AoS S4, and just in time to once again not read this topic as I fall behind in S5!

I also rank it below S3. One of my least favourite things in media is the heavy usage of dramatic irony, and we got that a hundred times over with the LMDs and the Framework versions of the characters. I spent half the season in a suspenseful thought of "when are these people going to figure it out so we can get on with it", and while some people like that, it's not my thing.

The first half with Ghost Rider and everything up to the introduction of LMD May to the audience was great, but everything after up until the last couple episodes was not so much.

19. Beat a platformer

Super Mario Odyssey

It's been awhile since I've beaten a game! I'm pretty late to this one, but it easily ranks up there on my list of favourite games of all-time, and is probably my favourite Mario, other than Super Mario World.

Have you ever enjoyed a game so much that you didn't want to play it too often because you didn't want it to end? That sounds kind of counter-intuitive, but I found myself enjoying my time with this game so much that I took it slow, only doing a single kingdom every few days, mostly because I wanted to prolong my experience with it.

I've still got another 400 or so moons to collect, though, so I'll be playing it for awhile.

The GotG soundtracks are right up the alley of my buddy and I in terms of our favourite genres of music to listen to.

I remember sometime before the second movie came out, we were talking about songs that would fit well in future GotG movies, and I mentioned Mr. Blue Sky as a good fit as I had been listening to it a lot at that moment in time. I was ecstatic during that opening sequence. Easily my favourite part of the movie, mostly because of that previous conversation.

One of the other songs I mentioned as a good fit for ending credits was Dancing in the Moonlight, which ended up being the ending credits for each episode of the GotG Telltale game.

4. Beat a game released between 2010-2017

Windjammers

Picked this up for $2. I've always wanted to try it after seeing how much Jeff and some of the other Giantbomb guys like the game. It's too bad that the online mode is essentially dead at this point, but I did beat arcade mode with all of the characters and might be able to get some local multiplayer games in, so it was worth the price of admission.

38. Beat a game you'd dropped or had a long hold on

Digimon World: Next Order (PS4)

This game had been on my wishlist and then my backlog essentially since I first heard about it a few months before it was released last year. I kept wanting to play it but knew it'd be a huge time sink so I always put it off. Once I did start, I kind of slogged through it for a couple weeks before putting in 10 hours today to finish it because I'm going on vacation tomorrow and didn't want to come back and have to try and pick up from where I left off.

The game itself felt like nostalgia was being injected straight into my veins. The original Digimon World on PS1 is one of my favourite games of all-time (top 25 on the list I did a couple years ago), and I knew I'd enjoy Next Order considering it was in the same style as that game. What I didn't expect was how much it drew from that first game. The soundtrack had remixed tracks from that first game, which blew my mind, and a lot of the Digimon you recruited performed the same functions in the city as they did in the original game.

I will say that if you don't have the nostalgia for that first game, you'll likely not enjoy this one too much. You get told to explore the world, with little knowledge, and everything kills you. "Grinding: The Game" is an equally appropriate title, with a solid third of my 35 hours spent just training my Digimon, including 8 hours today after I made it to the final bosses and initially got wrecked.

I still loved almost every minute of it! Not enough to dive into post-game stuff, though.

I've probably won 30% of my games against Token Druid with Control Mage, so it's definitely not an impossible matchup.

I do, however, tech an Abomination in my deck, which has won the game for me a couple times.

Shudderwock Shaman, though, is some bullshit. Over the last few weeks I've automatically conceded if I don't see the Genn animation at the beginning of the game. The star isn't worth having to sit through a game against that deck.

We've spent over a year at this point arguing with him about skill being a factor, and he never budged until now, on his own, without any real resistance.

I know things have to change to stay fresh, but I sort of miss the small team dynamic with Coulson as the director. Not really feeling this "we're all just agents and lack authority even though we spent X years keeping this thing afloat" dynamic they've got going.

My hype after seeing some of the costumes, such as Raven and Starfire, was already pretty low for this, but this trailer just makes it worse.

I actually thing Starfire looks better here, though still not great, but this is some of the worst characterization of Dick I've ever seen. Jason Todd apparently exists in this universe, so why are you making Dick a wannabe Jason here?

After seeing how dark and gritty this is apparently going to be, I also can't help feeling that Beast Boy doesn't really belong. Is everyone going to be shooting people and stepping on necks while Beast Boy turns into an Owl?
