Pitch
Shaduln vs. NBIceman - Shad's is a bit too barebones for me. While there may be some refining to do, on Iceman's, I at least see a coherent story here with some level of intrigue and a good cast that isn't abusing an 11th man. Much improved.
Snake vs. Mega Mana - Snake still lacks star power, but Mana's is so open for me that all it has going for it is star power, and the star power, for me at least, is middling-- maybe if I'd read House of X and Powers of X I'd be more drawn to it? I don't know.
...
MegaManX vs. Eddv - Eddv's might be technically the 'best' pitch for me in a lot of ways, even if it's not my cup of tea. MMX's lacks any real hook as to why I'd be interested in this story beyond alternate version shenanigans for the sake of them. *shrug

Fights later, maybe.

Well it's less about shoehorning Beast into the core of the conflict and more maintaining some connection between the X-Men and the team as I think that adds a bit more to things you can do with it and Beast is one of the better (imo) characters to diverge from the X-Men way of thinking.

But *shrug* I just think overcomplicated is a weird word for it I guess.

I'm not too surprised Player C won. Having 3 lords to bolster your numbers makes things more forgiving of smaller rosters and he had a pretty solid base of strong units.

Heck I had it at D > C > B > A in terms of win chances. If I knew C was the best player I would've def had them winning.

I think the wordiness of RetroaXtive makes it feel like it's overcomplicating the concept to some extent, and this hurts my opinion of it.

Does it overcomplicate though? I don't really think it's that complicated. Beast is a man of CRITICAL THINKING and sees that what Bishop is doing may be for the greater good despite the hotblooded feelings of his friends. Doesn't really seem out of character to me, even if it's an unorthodox way to include the guy as a member of a team.

I can't help but feel you may be judging harshly because you feel I'm stretching the limits of "one-two paragraphs" more than the pitch being complicated here. Which I mean, fine, but I asked you for input on that, we need to explain up to 10 members's inclusion in a team and such so I feel one paragraph is tough for this. Basically I'm just wondering is this secretly an exercise in creative writing and I just need to clean up the wording a bit, or is it about creating a compelling idea? Like it's easier to just punt Beast and be done with it but I find it more interesting to try and keep him in.

Fight
Mega Mana vs. MegamanX
Eddv vs. Scare
...
NBIceman vs. Snake

Pitch
Mega Mana vs. MegamanX - Both really open pitches in terms of the draw that are almost so open they don't add a lot to me. Unfortunately I think MegamanX needs the pitch more because Mana has more well known quantities, and they aren't known quantities I have anything against, particularly, so I basically have Mana winning this one by default. Probably wouldn't read either of these as they stand though.
Eddv vs. Scare - I actually like Scare's teamcomp but the pitch sounds like a less funny version of Deadpool 2's X-Force with too much competence on it to work as well. Eddv's team is very X-Men though it's the type of X-Men I'm not as interested in, but if the new stars are written well it could be something great (though my irrational dislike of Leech gives it a bit of a ceiling)-- that being said regardless I'll give it fairly good props just for very solid execution of the idea, and the idea being well defined and clear in what it's doing.
...
NBIceman vs. Snake - This would be closer without 11th man Apocalypse touching things in the pitch a bit more than I'd like, and being too necessary to keep Sabretooth in line in particular. Snake really needs some name value to ground things a bit though-- I get the idea, I like the idea, but I probably wouldn't read it without some inherent drawing power backbone to ground my interest.

Fight
redrocket vs. banananor - I basically see Rocket X as an x-23 solo title with a bunch of disjointed filler, some of which is stronger than x-23, which is particularly problematic. Not sure I'm huge on Mutant Intent just yet but it does fit the standard of being a team.
Wicklebee vs. ChichiriMuyo - Spy Calibur feels like an actual cohesive team title. Really like this lineup. X-Treme potentially has something there but the pitch reads more like an excuse for certain people with good combat abilities to join forces against an invading force than something I can feel the synergy with. Doesn't mean it isn't there-- with a refined pitch this could do something.
MartinFF7 vs. DeathChicken - Technically Martin's pitch is full of flaws and people have rightly destroyed him for it, but I'd sooner read it (if out of morbid curiosity if nothing else) than something that is led by a character I don't find terribly interesting titled Doop's X-Angels. I feel like straight rosters Doop's X-Angels is much better. Just needs a different direction and title.
Johnbobb vs. IhatethisCPU - I actually like both of these teams. I give the nod to MLA because it doesn't cop-out a 12 episode mini series and I like the roster slightly better. I do actually really like the starting arc, and given some sort of bridge into further conflicts dangled after that one arc, I think Imermutants is likely the better.

It may not be, but unless he's going to give these games an actual shot, why should we take anything he says on the subject seriously? After reading how he's spoken in the topic, does anyone believe he went in to any of the indie games he says he's played with an actual open mind, ready to have his opinion changed? I sure don't.

While that mindset possibly exists you have to realize that it possibly forms from somewhere too. Like if someone dislikes 10 lauded indie games in a row when they have an open mind, does that make their feelings on the next 10 not worth taking seriously by default? I don't know.

It's possible he's just bad at expressing himself or cares about winning arguments too much but has actually given these games a fair shot. I consider myself the less obnoxious version of Axl in terms of tastes in that I can count the number of indie games I thought were really great on one hand (plenty of decent ones though, and have played a lot less probably because I don't really care about giving a shot for the sake of it)-- but I certainly don't have an <i>agenda</i> to dislike indie games or anything.

I actually come closer to agreeing with you on indie games than not but I'd never pull out these wacky objectively better type statements.

It just comes down to what you prioritize in games. If you just want a well produced and refined take on an existing concept then AAA is likely to do better by you. If you value unique experiences then you're more likely to find something in indie games.

It's not really a conversation where 'objective value' is a thought that has much weight.

Ultimately I think the disconnect here is that you need to jump through a lot of hoops of character development for the teaming to make sense, and the problem on its face is how does it actually last long enough for that character development to feel organic and not a case of what would happen if these guys were literally forced to team and not implode for X amount of time.

Like when Eddv says "this gets cancelled after 4 issues" he might not be too far off the mark off the primary beef-- the beef being that if the team is written in a way that makes sense the team disbands itself within 4 issues and there's not really a way to rationalize otherwise without going beyond the scope of this project. You basically need to go beyond the level of pitch and outright write the path of character development.

Because it's not a direct counter. It's subtle. Magneto isn't outright saying "heh let's kill all humans and make mutants the best"-- you're not wrong that Magneto is morally grey and not a straight up devil character which is why they can work together

But Magneto is straight up smarter than Bishop by a lot and has a Shapeshifter to help him and so if you don't have a Beast there to help Bishop piece together why certain things might not be working I don't see it being a very fair conflict. I see it being Magneto manipulating Bishop ad-nauseam

It's not "gosh guys what do I do" with Beast arguing one thing and Magneto arguing the other it's "why isn't this working out how I envisioned it working for the best we need to figure it out" and Beast acting as the one guy on the team who is probably closest to Bishop's actual goal, with the rest not caring about the details as much or trying to manipulate him

I'll give thoughts on the other pitches in a bit when I'm not on mobile but I just wanted to justify Beast a bit cause I feel like scarlet thinks I took him just cause he was the top rated guy left

I envisioned Beast as the angel on Bishop's shoulder to Magneto's devil. I think without the subtle inner team conflict it loses focus after Senator Kelly stuff, yeah, but the idea I had in my head was mostly dealing with problems Magneto himself creates with Mystique's help by trying to mess with the future (since they only need to make it a plan to see how the plan ends up working and want to work against it-- you can create a lot of frame jobs). So while Beast is at odds with the team dynamic I also don't think Beast is the type to tear things apart outright either.

With Dark Beast you don't really have that dynamic imo cause dude probably is alright with Magneto doing Magneto things and it's just like you said where does it go.

I definitely am a lot closer to agreeing with foolmo than it comes off. I do think that you can get better at communicating effectively in an asychronous remote friendly way and it doesn't even take a ton of effort, and ideally everyone would-- the skills help you in all forms of general communication even if you're not actually working remotely. Knowing how to phrase things for your audience is an incredibly valuable skill.

The reality of life is not everyone is effective at it though and both sides in any given exchange are limiting factors, not just you-- and it's not always something you immediately know either. Programming especially is a weird field where it won't always be obvious that something isn't clicking until it's gone on a while, and then at that point you've done some good damage in terms of lost productivity, either cause the dude isn't coding anything, or the dude is coding a bunch of filth someone is gonna need to clean up later to integrate well. There are just a lot of factors going in. This lost productivity risk is the case even in non-remote, but it's harder to detect remotely.

He just seems kinda ignorant of a lot of nuance on the subject and comes off as a pretty poor example of someone I'd expect to be an authority on technical communication to boot (like if you consistently for 10+ years discuss things in a way that suggests you're not absorbing the conversation there's a very good chance that you're just not a good communicator in general and you're damage controlling things by claiming it's intentional) which rubs me the wrong way and sends me into rants. I can't shake the image of a foolmo email to a bright eyed newbie co-worker laying the groundwork for a project consisting of him explaining things in an overly complex manner with extensive focus on a bunch of minor points and poorly laying out the big picture, and then saying "git gud it's all right there" when asked questions about it.

I think trying to boil it down to subjective preference dumbs it down and plays into the exact kind of concession foolmo wants.

It's not just about "I prefer interacting with people" vs "I don't." Like I don't really wanna get into a remote cock measuring contest (one I lose to puns based on his stated credentials, to be clear) but I'd be extremely surprised if Foolmo has used remote to interact with anything but a fairly small group of peers in a coding team based on his thoughts, oftentimes the same peers regularly, where communication breakdowns are less prone to happen because it's a regular thing and you have a lot of experience communicating with those same people.

As a programmer who often needs to provide IT support and also work with the end user a lot, I have done it in that situation, and also a wide variety of others, most of the time in situations where the commute saved is 5-15 minutes so I'm inherently humoring both options, I've done both options with literally hundreds of people of varying experiences and backgrounds and have observed the benefits and pitfalls of both approaches.

On teams of people in your field specifically, most of your problems lie in less senior members (I've been on both sides of this, being the more experienced and less experienced) being less inclined to iron out a full understanding in a remote situation, as remote sorta inherently suppresses flow of dialogue, causing them to waste a lot of time to "figure it out themselves" in particular with completely new bits of codebase and such. That can be good for learning, but oftentimes it's just a waste of time and spoon feeding any ambiguities in the starting point is a better use of time, letting them learn more about it as they interact with the codebase in a way that actually adds to it. But you can't just assume they need to be spoonfed everything either, otherwise your more important points become obscured. Hence why the async communication is never quite optimal in those situations. As you work with them more, and on more familiar terms, it will be closer to optimal.

When there's a more limited overlap in skillets it also becomes an issue of it becoming increasingly implausible to present an ironclad remote friendly communication. Like if I'm a programmer with some math background talking to another programmer who is primarily a Mathematician who has been brought in for theoretical knowledge more than coding, it's not reasonable for either of us to fully grasp the levels of understanding of the other very well and a face to face can really iron out things a lot more efficiently and get us both moving quicker.

And then you've got the people who just are kinda bad at understanding things as the receiver of information without it being eye to eye, back and forth. That doesn't mean they're bad at their job-- it's not optimal to simply fire them because they're not good at processing information that they can't provide immediate feedback to and have all the extra inputs that face to face gives you, but they inherently just have trouble conveying themselves in a remote situation so if you want them at maximum efficiency being face to face is just more effective if possible. Saves you a lot of time clarifying yourself remotely, and them a lot of time processing what you're communicating.

These are not hypotheticals. These are situations I've observed. I feel if you're the kind of person who has remoted with like 10 or 20 co-workers on a coding team, several times, and haven't really been broad with the types and number of people you've worked with, you're just not going to understand all the scenarios where remote can fail, especially since it's so often not going to be obvious you're not conveying yourself properly because the lost productivity isn't on your end, but it can. That doesn't mean it isn't far better in many situations as well, and if the commute is 4 hours it being better as an absolute may even be close to accurate just cause of that high cost, but yeah.

Does pretending to be a martyr get you off or are you just really bad at absorbing what people are saying? Like you wonder why I have doubts that you are capable of communicating effectively when this is your take on what the discussion has been? Like to be a good technical communicator you also need to be able to understand who you're communicating with, even if you delude yourself into thinking they're bad at it and blaming them. If you just misunderstand where their issue is, you'll never be able to figure out what they don't get, and thus you won't be able to clarify anything.

I am aware. I'm saying evidence-- thousands and thousands of posts worth-- showing just how you attempt to convey thoughts on the board strongly suggests you are failing to do so for reasons beyond your control.

All my experience has shown it's a broadly good thing, and more experience only shows me solutions to difficulties, further solidifying my theories and arguments. Why would I not be adamant that it should be a goal for us to reach? If I get any decent counter evidence, THEN I'll change my mind. How could anything else make sense to a programmer?

So you're a programmer who only accounts for failure conditions that you're able to prove exist via observing them occur via the way you use your program?

I certainly couldn't imagine any other way to approach discovering potential problems while coding!!!

Yeah I gathered that it just feels like a bit of a waste to me.

Like yes it's associated with WCW. I don't think that's something AEW should take any sort of shame in being associated with now though-- heck if anything that kinda feels like what they're going for.

Just make a big summer PPV event Bash at the Beach let Jericho's cruise do something else.

In 2018, Las Vegas based company, KBN Inc. filed for the trademark of Halloween Havoc which according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office had been listed as "dead" since 2005.[1][2]

Darn. Kinda funny WWE can't get it either though.
