Really think this is the right answer.

Though it's hard to know at this point since it's been so long since we've had a real contest. Gimmick contests might've killed it more than this. Gotta see a real bracket and see how I feel about it.

I'm pretty annoyed actually. I really like the way one of the hell level helmets looks, but all the inferno stuff looks terrible.

The inferno armor is actually generally bad too for Wizard. Doom Armor is okay I guess but the other two I'm not big on. They need a way to change an armor's look to another model somehow.

I don't even care about the design much, honestly-- I know at some point they started putting too much damn sugar on the things though. I'm not sure if they've toned it back a bit but it used to be more fruity-- then it turned into your generic overly sugar coated breakfast cereal. So I stopped eating it. Should give it a shot and see if they improved it since since I used to like the stuff a lot.

Man it's so hard to quick match in SSF4 these days. I'm getting the feeling that most people that are still playing have high PP and don't want to fight low PP people. I've hardly played any ranked of this so my ranking is like 500 PP. Keep fighting people who are like 3000-- which I don't mind, but I think they do (I make it close and they only get 1PP for beating me) since I can never get a rematch with them. On the plus side once I beat a few of these guys maybe I'll have enough PP that I can get caught by people with high rating that want to fight similarly ranked guys.

Riku I guess. I like a lot of characters from the series but don't feel super strong on any of them. Don't think any of them would make a top 50 characters list if I made one.

Except it's not "every reviewer"

Just look at this site with its like 40 reviews. Half of the reviews don't mention OoE as an RPG (and none that I looked at called it an RPG without the "action" qualifier included) and hell some of em even liken it to platformers (that one you said no one would call it) with no mention of calling it an RPG.

So uh, yeah.

It's just a case of the reviewer being wrong vs the person who made categories being wrong. I don't see how that lends credibility either way. (also Yakuza was called a "sandbox RPG" in one of these reviews so yeah as I said-- not the best for nailing down categories)

The problem with using that as evidence is that sites like that overclassify everything because they want to catch misinformed people like you. I'm sure they also have it listed as action, platformer, adventure, and a handful of other things that only tangentially make sense.

If you force a source to commit to one category, they won't put them in RPGs 9/10 times. Guaranteed.

You can find plenty of exceptions for all of the points, but most of the things you said will have most-all of those. Finding the exception doesn't discount all of those as common themes from RPGs. And no the dungeon is not an open world it's a closed world. It's one giant area. Very contained.

As for the so called sidequests in the Castlevania games I don't call most of them optional-- most of them are needed to progress they're just not presented that way. Or they're optional but it's more hassle to not do them than to do them.

And I guess by non-scripted I meant non-mandatory for any quest or sidequest-- the script doesn't send you to them you talk to them yourself for the fun of it or for hints or whatever.

Anyway, I'm just saying that most sources Castlevania is not an RPG, but an action game or a platformer. There's too much different and not enough similar with CV and most RPGs.. like I said there are almost as many ties with CV as there are dozens of completely not RPGs. You arbitrarily say that leveling and stat manipulation/items make something an RPG. I can say a party building dynamic does and I probably end up with a lot less false positives than you do with not many false negatives. Thing with RPGs is you can't narrow it down to one or two important statistics cause all the defining characteristics are broad.

God yes. I don't get how you can make a PG wrestling show and not have ridiculous crap on it. If anything's wrong with the product right now it's that. PG and Realism never really gelled well together-- how many realistic PG movies out there are actually good. I'm sure some exist but I can't think of any right now. All the good movies I can think of are totally out there or PG-13+

That's not my argument, no. That's evidence that said Castlevania games are so loosely related to RPGs that you have modes in game that remove all RPG elements from it and the game feels completely fine as a result.

The RPG stuff that SotN+ Castlevanias are missing that most other hybrid RPGs have in some form:

- Nonscripted interaction with NPCs
- Unimportant NPCs (ones that aren't used to advance the plot, sell you stuff, or enemies)
- Some use of menus in the combat
- An open world
- A party building dynamic of some sort
- Skill/character customization that exists independent of item drops
- Optional side quests/side areas
- Dialogue choices of some sort

Sure there are more that I'm not thinking of. Now whether you think this is important or not is up to you, but most games you listed have all of these. Most sources will have Castlevania games listed as action platformers, not RPGs, and there's a reason for that. In fact the funniest part of all of this is that the most RPGlike Castlevania game is Simon's Quest. That's really the only one I could even humor calling an RPG.

I think you missed what I meant with RE4. RE4 has upgradable weapons that have attack stats and rate of fire stats and such. That's not figuring out hidden stats-- you see it all there and can choose your gear accordingly. That puts stats at the core of the game in some way, and by what you're saying makes RE4 an RPG/Sim.

Now... I know RE4 and GTA3 and Madden and SFA3 and such should not be considered RPGs or Sims, but my point of listing "RPGs" was to show you that your criteria for determining what's a sufficient condition to be considered one of those things is faulty.

Basically where we disagree is you think RPG is a very broad genre like a sim is. I (and most genre classifiers) think it's a much more narrow genre. You need a certain amount of things to be it, otherwise you're more of some other genre than RPG and will be classified as such. Now there are the hybrids like "action RPG" but go too far off the beaten path like with Castlevania and you're not an Action RPG as much as an Action game that has some light RPG elements involved. And while you could technically call a game like Order of Ecclesia an RPG and not be totally wrong, you'd be very misleading in doing so. What you're doing here is basically like calling a banana split fruit instead of ice cream. You're technically right by some twisted definition of the word, but you're purposely ignoring genres it has much stronger ties to in order to fluff up the numbers.

Sports games are not sim games

Yes sports games can have sim aspects much like castlevania games have rpg aspects but they're... sports games. They have their own genre. If you called Madden 2011 a sim someone would slap you for it.

You know what else is an RPG/Sim due to stats/numbers?

Gran Turismo 3.
Resident Evil 4.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

But I'm sure these are racing sim, zombie survival sim, and homie sim respectively, right.

Also D2 has a bucketload more story than the DS Castlevanias-- people just skip over the dialogue because it's... not very interesting. I'd say the CV games have a better story, even, but D2's is more prevalent and a lot more fleshed out if you look for it. It's just that the flesh isn't very interesting.

PoR and OoE's story were both pretty minor by RPG standards. It was big for a CV game but I haven't played any RPGs since the NES that had less story than those, really. I'm not saying story is an RPG exclusive thing, but a certain degree of focus on it is a characteristics that RPGs have.

Anyway I'm just going to leave your argument at "Street Fighter Alpha 3 is an RPG" and leave it at that.

Like uh... by your very loose definition of what's necessary to make an RPG, you could call Super Metroid an RPG (you power up over the course of the game via gathering up items). Or you could call Street Fighter Alpha 3 an RPG (leveling up system in World Tour mode).

Just think about that.

My point was more that there were a lot of elements to hold up games like Pokemon and Kingdom Hearts as rpgs whereas CV's is... very flimsy. If you removed all of the rpg elements from those games you'd have a completely different game. Castlevania you just have a game with locked in gear and stats-- not a big deal at all.

For instance if you take away the leveling from Pokemon or KH you still have a menu based RPG combat system. You gut the combat system and there's nothing left.
You take away the gear and leveling from Skyrim or Mass Effect and you still have... well, extensive roleplaying and a high focus on story (moreso in the case of ME but yeah)... take those away and... well, okay, you have a fps, but it's a lot more to take out.
You take away gear and leveling from Castlevania games? You have Richter mode.

The RPG genre has a lot of characteristics to it. If you've hardly got any of those you're generally more an action game than an RPG. If you've got a lot of em, you're more of an action RPG. Makes sense to me.

The big block for CV games being RPGs is there being modes in every one of the games that remove all the RPG elements from them. That to me says they're close enough to action games that you can pretty safely call them action games with RPG elements more than action RPGs

Sunday Night Heat > ECW > NXT > who cares I think. There was a long period where Heat was actually relevant to the main shows. ECW was somewhat relevant in its own vacuum. NXT would probably beat out ECW but the run was pretty short. If you put NXT vs like any given 6 months of ECW I think it wins too though.
