Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is partnering, through his Seth MacFarlane Foundation, with Martin Scorseses Film Foundation to fund the first-ever, curated restoration of historically significant animated shorts from the 1920s to 1940s.
MacFarlane is committed to saving and honoring the art form from its earliest days forward. Hes been fascinated by animation since childhood when he began drawing. Hes also an animation alum of Rhode Island School of Design. This year MacFarlanes The Family Guy is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Im so grateful to Seth MacFarlane for his enthusiasm and his support on these restorations, said Martin Scorsese in a statement. What an astonishing experience, to see these remarkable pictures that I experienced for the first time as a child brought back to their full glory. Imagine the reactions of children today! Because the films now seem as fresh as they did when they were newly made.

Nine animated pics from Max and Dave Fleischer, who created Betty Boop and Koko the Clown, are among the pieces that are being restored. MacFarlane is a jazz music aficionado and The Great American Songbook, so the Fleischer Brothers noted use of jazz in their soundtracks, including collaborations with Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, and Don Redman, are a big reason why the Fleischers work is represented in this restoration collection.

The work Martin Scorsese and his Film Foundation have been doing is essential cinematic preservation, said MacFarlane. Im honored to partner with them in restoring their first-ever collection of storied animation.

Family Guy is 22 seasons in and it doesnt look like Seth MacFarlane has any plans to end the beloved animates series anytime soon.

The creator and star of the popular show recently told the Los Angeles Times in a new profile celebrating 25 years since the show initially aired, At this point, I dont see a good reason to stop.

People still love it, he said. It makes people happy and it funds some good causes. Its a lot of extraneous cash that you can donate to Rainforest Trust and you can still go out to dinner that night.

MacFarlane continued, There was a time when I thought, its time to wrap it up. At this point, weve reached escape velocity. I dont know that theres any reason to stop at this point unless people get sick of it. Unless the numbers show that people just are, Eh, we dont care about Family Guy anymore. But that hasnt happened yet.

Family Guy premiered in 1999 on Fox, but was initially canceled after just two seasons, and then scored a third season before being nixed for good or so viewers thought. Thanks to reruns on Cartoon Network and DVD sales, the series was revived and became a massive success.

Season four of Family Guy debuted in 2005 on Fox, where it has continued to air every year until its current 22nd season.

MacFarlane voices the characters Peter Griffin, Brian Griffin, Stewie Griffin and Glenn Quagmire; with Seth Green as Chris Griffin and Neil Godman; Alex Borstein voicing Lois Griffin, Tricia Takanawa, Loretta Brown and Barbara Pewterschmidt; and Mila Kunis as Meg Griffin.

In November 2022, as the animated show reached its 400-episode milestone, MacFarlane revealed his all-time favorite episode to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Agatha Christie episode [season nines And Then There Were Fewer] is one that sticks out in my mind, he said at the time. That was certainly fun to make.

Trina Robbins, a groundbreaking cartoonist who expanded the visibility of women in comics through her art, writing, scholarship and advocacy over a career that spanned more than six decades, died today at age 85 following a stroke that left her hospitalized earlier this year.

Robbins, who was inducted into the Will Eisner Comics Hall of Fame in 2013, was originally active in comics and science fiction fandom, then became one of the first women in the underground comix movement in the 1960s. Her unapologetically feminist take on politics and pop culture stood out among peers like Robert Crumb and S. Clay Wilson, and the experience left her a lifelong critic of the boys club misogyny she perceived in such work.

Actually, I do have an adjacent question to the general premise of this topic: are we talking western animation specifically drawn in the west, like actual American Animators, or western shows that are outsourced to Korean studios/elsewhere like a bunch of shows from our youth? Because the 90s golden age of tv cartoons was great but I don't know if they were drawn in-house. Like I know btas was outsourced to Korean animators. Same with avatar. Tiny toons I don't know. Ducktales and Disney's other 80s-90s classic cartoons of our childhood I'm not sure.

And I kind of do agree that I loathe the 2000s/post 2000s animation style and animation itself, I think they call it callarts? Compare that with the other goofy but still great style of our cartoons like the tick or even ninja turtles

Demolition work is continuing for the Manhattan Detention Complex (MDC) at 124-125 White Street in Chinatown, Manhattan. Led by design-build organization Gramercy Group Inc., the $2.13 billion project will replace the aging detention center known as The Tombs with a 295-foot-tall structure spanning 1.25 million square feet and approximately 15 to 17 stories high. When complete, the MDC will stand as the tallest jail structure in the world and its modern facilities will help accommodate the planned closure of Rikers Island. AECOM-Hill JV is the construction manager for the property, which is bound by Walker Street to the north, the Manhattan Criminal Court Building to the south, Baxter Street to the east, and Centre Street to the west.

Recent photographs show the progress of the $125 million demolition, which is unfolding in multiple phases. Most of the main L-shaped tower is covered in a network of scaffolding as crews work to gut its interiors, and the low-rise structure that formerly sat in its void along Baxter Street has already been fully razed and its footprint partially excavated. The second-story bridge that connected the main building to the tallest structure in the complex to the south has also been demolished.
