Basically, the husband-wife director duo wanted to do a sci-fi movie patterned after Blade Runner and disregarded the source material altogether. They were riding high off of the success of Max Headroom and thought that anything they touched would be golden. (Everyone else thought otherwise.)

Respectfully, I think you're being facetious. There's a clear and obvious difference between discussing themes in media and topics directly discussing current US politcs/elections, especially when topics sometimes seem intentionally divisive.

I don't like the change and don't think it should have happened (I simply don't engage with topics I don't want to read or be involved in, like a grown adult), but it's not hard to infer the intent behind the change.

You can say things like "lightsabers are cool" or "I enjoyed the fight with the rancor." Pretty much anything else has a measure of subtext to it whether it wants to be addressed or not. Even asking a question like "What will the Empire do in the next movie? Or, if there's no Empire, who will the new enemy be?" could leave someone biting their lip to try and avoid saying anything political.

The first Star Wars movie had the Empire ignoring the intergalactic council. Maybe the next prequel will have their own version of 1/6 showing the early warning signs of fascism. But that's political. Even the famed Darth Vader twist could be argued to have political undertones as it represents an age gap: the 1940-1950s generation that were in support of war and the 1960s-1970s generation that opposed it. The Rebel symbol (and the concept of a rebel is political) is a cross between the Fleur-de-lis and the peace symbol.

It's like having a fight with an elephant and not being allowed to comment on what the elephant represents. You can't even get into hypotheticals about where the series goes from here because those choices are likely to be predicated on some measure of politics. "I bet the next Star Wars movie is a bunch of laser fights in space with no overtones."

People always default to these kind of examples but we know there is a big difference between discussing a movie plot, or a game plot that involves politics within that story (which will still be allowed) than just the people who post articles about Biden or Trump or some member of Congress and just want to argue about democrats or republicans.

You can't discuss Star Wars without politics, classic or modern. Or Star Trek. Or Planet of the Apes. Or Captain America. The character's name is literally political.

So, here's the thing. There's no virtue signaling. The arguments that they "made her ugly" are disingenuous. The motion capture that they use for the character model is capturing the shape of her face, not the contour of her makeup. They use that system to record her talking and moving around. Which helps them translate those movements directly into the game.

Here's what she looks like doing the motion capture (far less makeup)

https://youtu.be/Svcy5sR60-0?si=cVdUs963XO9YPueL

You're saying it's a genuine limitation of motion capture? The computer is trying to fill in the gaps on what her face is supposed to look like?

I thought she was the voice actress, not the character model.

It's weird that they made a point to capture the same eyebrows, cheekbones, chin, and lips if she's not the model.

The character doesn't have to be attractive just because the actor is, but they made a point to make the character a less-attractive version of her VA.

First, why does the character model have to resemble the voice actress?

She's the voice actor? I thought she was the character model. It looked like they took the same features and uglied them up a bit.

Second, where have they "virtue signaled" anything? You're being weird again

It's actively downplaying looks.

If they hired someone average to be the model for an average-looking character, that's passive. They hired someone for a role and that's the end of it. But if they hire an attractive person, and they make her average-looking, they're actively striping away that beauty to show that they only care about the person underneath.

It's like ordering at Starbucks. You could order the Caramel Macchiato with soy milk or you could order "a vegan Caramel Macchiato" so that everyone within earshot knows you're vegan.

The style works for the movie and this take on the characters. As I said in in earlier post its going for a sort of "note book doodle" feel for the designs. They are suppose to be off putting and ugly.

Again this does affect any other version of these characters. The old shows still exist, the old movies still exist, the old and correct comics still exist. This is just one new take on these characters. And it was a good movie.

I haven't seen the film, so I can't really comment on how well the style fits the tone that they're going for.

This is sad. I've bounced around character names so many times that I've forgotten the current name of the story's primary antagonist. I realized there was a scene that would make a more logical introduction for her character than the flat intro that she otherwise would have received later in the story. But when I went to do a search for her name, I couldn't remember what it was. I'd thought about meaningful names, names that phonetically sound like words that would suggest her character, and names inspired by songs from bands that have sung about subjects with a loose connection to my story. Nothing really seems to fit.

I really need to sit down and write this. Instead, I've spent most of my free time on this three-day weekend watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 and YouTube video reviews. (Oh, and I beat Contra on NES.) I have made a couple of changes to my story. I feel I've given my opening scene the little mmph that it was missing and I've tied up one of my story's plot holes. But still, I should have accomplished more.

I hate using placeholder names. I always get that phantom fear that somebody's going to discover my outline and think that "Dave," "Alice," and "Mike" are the most creative names that I can come up with. Or else they'll read Dirt Cop, Valley Girl, and Alt Kid and somehow not connect the dots that those are placeholders meant to suggest the nature of the characters. (My story doesn't have an emo youth or a valley girl, btw. There is a dirt cop though.)
