Which other anime properties use the Ninja Storm fighting mechanics? I have never seen of any others.

I'd also be happy with a musou though, anime fits perfectly with that genre imo.

I'm not big into fighting games but I am so starved for a HxH game that I'll most likely be getting this.

I do wish that it wasn't a simple 2D fighter, if it was in the style of the Ninja Storm games I'd be more excited.

I can't believe that's true, surely they would have designed it to be possible without the pause... Right?

The problem is it requires way too much practice, like the amount it would take to defeat Malenia solo at level 1. Difference is the latter is a respectable goal, whereas brawler is a fucking minigame and has no right to ask that much of you.

I was thinking the same thing about Goblin Queen. I know it's from the comics but the name drop just seemed silly. She starts off legitimately threatening and then asks everyone to call her Goblin Queen which is not at all intimidating.

Almost felt like tonal whiplash, the voice actor gave it her best but it's not possible to make that name sound anything other than goofy.

the first book feels a bit derivative of LOTR

Maybe that's why I have struggled getting into WoT, I don't much care for Lord of the Rings for some reason. I think because it's the baseline of high fantasy and has all the regular tropes you'd expect. I love it for all the inspiration it's given to so many authors, but nowadays it's just sorta... boring I guess.

And that's how it feels reading the first book for Wheel of Time. I think I'll just have to try and speed read it until it starts grabbing me. Yeah that's what I'll do, it feels shameful to not read such a highly praised and influential series.

However I could still use more easily digestible books. Currently reading the second Xanth book and it's alright, but certain aspects are very dissatisfying which is what drove me to make this topic. Wanted something better.

Just remembered that I did read through the Mage Errant series within the last few years, and it was an enjoyable if sometimes messy ride. What I enjoyed most about it was the creative world building, not as dense as Sando's, but every location and power was imaginative. Played well with established tropes, with neat little spins making them feel fresh.

I'll sift through y'alls recommendations in a minute, very much appreciated! But I just remembered something I wanted to inquire about, since I was reading the wiki of Dante's Inferno (it was the end of a rabbit hole) and it had me wondering if there was any well made modern adaptation of that story.

Maybe one that enhances the supernatural aspects? I doubt something like this exists, but figured I'd ask anyway.

Already done that once or twice, he's my favorite character so it was natural.

Wheel of Time is another suggestion that's always brought up. It's also a difficult series to get into though, so that along with Malazan is on the back burner. I have tried to force myself to get into WoT on a few occasions now and it just hasn't yielded positive results so far. I know I just gotta push through and I'll love it, one day...

I have a real tough time with the beginning of any story, even the Way of Kings was a challenge at first, took me a year to finally get through it -- although the last quarter went a lot faster since that's when it got super intriguing. And every reread since then has been a breeze.

I'm talking pure fantasy with a good magic system. Nothing that takes place in the real world, I need a completely made up world (or worlds) where magic is a constant presence in every day life for the characters.

Also needs to be in third person, preferably limited. I know that's very particular but it's somehow the only way I can feel immersed? First person narrative takes me out of the story, I'm weird.

I've read all the cosmere books several times now. Even the ones that came out last year. I think it's finally time for something new.

Rogue One is saved by the final 45ish minutes, and there are some good scenes before that too but otherwise it's a disjointed mess.

Solo is horribly underrated. It's a fun adventure movie with a lot of charm, as a Star Wars movie should be. The biggest issue was the damn lighting.

Not to harp on the point but yeah the dlc has two of the best bosses in FromSoft history. Also one of the worst but it's nowhere near as bad as say Bed of Chaos at least.

On another note I think Bloodborne has the best replayability, not in terms of how many hours you'll get out of it, but the quality of it all. For instance I have more hours in Elden Ring but I don't feel like I have actually played that game as thoroughly since a ton of those hours are just traveling around the gigantic world.

Bloodborne just seems more focused than the other Souls games (aside from Sekiro which is the most focused) with the trick weapons all being so intriguing and even capable of making it feel like a new game depending on which you choose.

Damn I love Bloodborne so much. I could keep talking about it so I'll just stop here

Very weak dungeon let alone final dungeon, then I really hated the final battle sequence too, like it pissed me off so much, every phase of that fight and being forced to fight with team members that didnt have the top tier materia so it was a struggle

I really didn't like that aspect of the final battle, only three characters can really be set up with optimal materia at any given time. So requiring every member of the team for the final battle, while conceptually cool, it still dragged down the quality of the fights.

And I didn't expect Aerith to fight at all for obvious reasons so she didn't have a single materia equipped. I still somehow trudged through and squeezed out a win but it did not feel satisfying at all.

Switching materia around in general was really annoying to me though.

For Odin I don't think it's a matter of not taking damage, you have to actively be parrying him in order to prevent his Zantetsuken I think.

Staying long range doesn't help since he can still damage your teammates.

Dyne was fine, at least he only occupies a small section of the game. Red's kid voice is dumb and I couldn't even continue using him in combat because of it.

Overall I loved the game immensely, but it's so weird how often it frustrated me with pointless nonsense. Time wasting overworld crap, overtuned challenges, some of the minigames just straight up suck.

Yet it's still a great game somehow. The story and characters are all on point, combat is better than ever (until you get to the endgame and it becomes a chore in some cases), and the world is beautiful even though it's often a slog to travel through.

It's hard for me to decide which is best, they're all equally impressive. The only thing I know for sure is that the first is my least favorite since I typically prefer over the top action over a grounded variety.

Not to say the first movie still isn't fantastic, it is for sure. I just think it gets better from the second as they fully lean into video game protagonist power.

The scene in the ruins where he's picking up weapon spawns was straight up Uncharted.

Seems more likely they started with Souls-inspired combat and ended up independently coming up with a very similar samurai parry system

I find that hard to believe considering how similar it is to Sekiro combat. Along with the posture bar. But I guess it's not impossible they developed a similar system on accident, that's a crazy coincidence if so. I'm more willing to believe they saw early footage of Sekiro and decided to copy it.

However yes it is splitting hairs, which is what we're doing with Hollow Knight too. Just wanted to point that out.

I managed to get through the first brutal challenge somehow. The next one I couldn't even get to the final round.

I usually love when games have a parry system, but I feel this one was implemented somewhat poorly. It doesn't feel fluid enough since you can't cancel attack animations.

On top of that you're usually dealing with multiple enemies at once who can spam attacks. It's the opposite of fun when I enter a combat challenge and immediately get stunlocked to death.

Maybe the Yuffie plasma build would yield better results. Set a teammate up with synergy+heal so you get constant healing? I haven't tried it myself yet so not sure how effective it would be.
