What's considered "helpful" can be catastrophically relative.
Contrary to militant attitudes, what's "good for the goose" is not always good for the gander.

People hastily applying generic solutions for a peer's unusual dilemma is not uncommon.
And sometimes what sounds like a run-of-the-mill common case needs to be approached differently due to quirks of the individuals involved.

Lots of people assume they know exactly what a peer needs to fix a life issue. However, they're coming from a secondhand perspective that is not as clear as the peer's. Sometimes observers consider something an issue that the peer themselves don't consider a problem at all. Sometimes that's because it's an issue that's only real in the observer's perspective. When you enact an uncomfortable "solution" on someone for a problem that's not there...you're not being a hero full of wisdom, you're just being an ass full of shit.

When your usual go-to solution for peer problems is tough love, you eventually become a villain yourself because you're willfully overlooking all the large square pegs you keep shoving into small round holes just for the sake of saying you helped. You start making the same mistakes typical of wanton vigilantism. Your methods eventually start scaling to excessive, unapologetic, and reckless. You ignore all the collateral damage you cause. You become a problem to avoid yourself.

Why did you break up with your ex?

He broke up with me.

When we first dated, I was a skinny 6'2" at 130lbs. He was a 6'5" gym rat at 225lbs and got off on our size difference. On his suggestion, I started lifting weights with him to bulk up so I was "more fuckable". I got enthusiastic about it for his sake and jumped to 200lbs after a year. I got stronger and started looking a lot more buff.

Ironically my ex didn't like that as it enabled to me be more independent with strong arming stuff on my own. In his head, that was his job. He wanted to be Mr. Alpha who I always ran to for help. His ego was surprisingly fragile for someone who looked like a muscle magazine cover. He eventually got fed up after I hit 220lbs and dumped me for a bitchy scene queen twink into drugs and body worship, which didn't last because naturally those types are irritating little narcissistic assholes themselves.

During that time is when our mutual friend took advantage of the separation and asked me out. He asked me right after witnessing my ex dump me. Our friend was a physically regular looking guy with an effeminate personality. So it really pissed off my ex that he got replaced by someone we knew who's smaller and girlier than him. I bumped into my ex a couple weeks ago and my new relationship still grinds his gears. He's such an over-competitive ass.

If you're a law-breaking citizen with a record of armed robbery, well that particular law is not in place to protect you. It's to deter you...get over it.

I 100% understand this in terms of attraction

Good, then we're on the same page.

Because, as a man, if you approach the unspoken rules of attraction between men and women with an expectation of absolute gender equality, you're going to be sorely disappointed as an average male specimen. Only guys with exceptionally attractive traits break those rules; because they have an attractive trait or two that compensates enough for the unattractive one(s).

The majorities of men and women have different dating/relationship expectations and priorities respectively.

A woman being shy is typically not seen as an unattractive trait to interested men.
However, it's often the reverse when it comes to men being attractive to women.
There's differences in common priorities between the groups and they mold relevant dating standards.
And those standards won't always seem equal across the board, but there's still generally a lot of trade offs between genders.

There's considerably more women who want assertive men instead of shy passive men.
Just like most men want a woman who looks like a sexy girlfriend instead of a grungy androgynous prude.

I want to hear some honest discussion from women about shy, passive men

Some women are willing to settle for a shy, passive man.
Usually due to him having other qualities that compensate (boy band looks, talented, useful, etc).

Most women are not, because they're thinking long term. Shy guy's gonna get old...

Acting like a stereotypical macho thug who crushes beer cans on his head and slaps whatever girl's ass he wants is not what most women mean by wanting a guy who's assertive. Usually when women over 21 bring up a guy's lack of assertiveness, they're mainly talking about:
-what an awkward chicken he is about speaking his mind in front of new people
-his cowardice in defending his opinions
-his lack of initiative to LEARN HOW TO hold an engaging conversation on his own
-the disappearing act he pulls when things get aggressive; picking flight far too often than fight

It all says he still needs Mommy to hold his hand to express and defend himself. So what kind of use would he be for a woman looking for a strong dependable partner? All those qualities just say he would be more of a drain than a benefit to keep around.

Basically any dude who uses "boohoo I'm just too socially timid to chat about anything interesting to other people" as an excuse to avoid learning how to be a better speaker, BAM loser in the long run. Because historically that generally IS what happens...

You don't have to be alpha. Just get out of your fucking shell; it's huge vagina repellent after your teens.

Flirty golddiggers who lie about being golddiggers.

Men who fake being nice in dating typically do it to get sex so they can satiate their ego.
Women who fake being nice typically do it to exploit another person's status and/or assets so they can satiate their ego.

A lot of the "nice girls" have an entitled princess complex with the belief they always "deserve better" (ego), even when they refuse to do what's typically expected to earn those luxuries. They see themselves as unique and automatically deserving of special treatment despite not having any significant attractive qualities to begin with (ie: basic flabby plain chick with no impressive merits who demands nothing less then a sensational hardworking man who's the perfect package). This is similar to how "nice guys" feel entitled to sex for simply demonstrating bare minimum courtesy without making themselves a better catch and obsessing over getting the popular hot chicks as "alpha" status symbols.

FYI, the female counterpart to the popularized alpha male concept is "queen bee".

90% sounds like hyperbole to me, but you might be surprised how much human initiative is propelled by the desire for eventual access of higher status and intimate comforts (which includes sex).

It would, however, be more accurate to say that 90% of human activity is in some way connected to the eventual desire to pursue physical intimacy. Humanity is not only a predominately visual species when it comes to attractions; we're also very tactile.

Does Revenge of the Nerds hold up in 2017?

Not really, no.

For one thing the term "nerd" doesn't carry the same amount of stigma as it did in the 1980's. Most of modern technology that societies enjoy and made standard (ie: smart phones) were directly sourced from prominent intellectuals (which can include those who fit the 80's stereotype of a "nerd"). Practically every mainstream demographic benefits from these technological advancements in some way and most educated society is aware of this, greatly in part to the rise of the internet.

The whole "nerds vs jocks" dynamic that was the central conflict in the film is also not as prolific in the US as it once was. A lot of luxuries that modern athletes and playboys enjoy basically come from tech "nerds". Professional level sports is no exception when you consider how scientific development plays into the upkeep of aspiring athletes...and is the pivotal element necessary for it to ever advance further.

And thanks to increasing widespread access to greater fitness and educational resources for lower/middle class people, it's much easier to find an individual who fits both of the classic archtypes of "nerd" and "jock" at the same time. It's really not as hard now to find someone who looks athletically fit and has a legit college education outside of stereotypical jock interests. This wasn't the case back in the 1980's due to classism and fewer resources available to average, less privileged citizens.

The film's gimmick is stale now and wouldn't make as much sense in today's decade due to the dramatic changes in mainstream society since the 1980's.
