Oh, not at all. It the same as DeSantis going after Disney or even the unending conservative focus on abortion: they think it wins them the support of their base. I was just responding to the "is it a good idea". It just particularly bugs me that we are so insecure as a nation that we scared of a rival nation's video clip app stealing our credit card information...or whatever exactly we think is going to happen.

On the other hand it would probably be good to have a threatening rival again so we can apply the 'us vs them' mentality that seems to be required among a large segment of the population to something other than culture wars. Have at it, fearmongers.

"The country"?
This. Everything has a dynamic/happy undercurrent if the country feels as if it's on the rise/improving/admirable. Everyone living there (unless discriminated against, of course) feels like they are contributing to a whole that they want to be a part of.

If, instead, the country feels like it's incompetent or just existing to make the rich richer...then everything has an undercurrent of dirty pointless selfishness. Things have been sliding towards the latter in the US for quite a while: you could pick many start points, but I'll go with Reagan and the end of the Cold War in the 80s. We won, but we lost our righteous purposefulness in the process and Reagan greatly accelerated the path towards greed. But everything has felt outright dirty since we elected Trump. Before him I never would have thought the country was SO gone as to elect an obvious, obvious con man President. Now I sadly know better.

My personal finances/etc...whatever. If my life fits into a greater purpose I can at least somewhat happily fit myself into it. If not...gross existential crisis.

And while I'm at it lets add nuclear war also. Do we think that we, as a species, are going to be able to avoid using those on ourselves again? It's a matter of time.

For those who don't remember the details of the coffee lawsuit, a 79 year-old woman suffered third degree burns over 6% of her body and required skin grafts when she spilled an entire cup of coffee that McDonalds had served at nearly boiling (190F). She initially offered to settle for just the cost of medical expenses ($20,000), but McDonald's only offered $800.
I am sympathetic to the old lady: coffee is going to spill on people from time to time, container or not, and especially in a car. It doesn't need to be boiling/scalding hot.

Upon reflection I can be sympathetic to the kid as well: Happy Meal food is going to fall on kids at times. It can and maybe should be served lukewarm given its likely customers.

But I don't want to pay more to make my food lukewarm to protect adults from themselves. The packaging needs to be reliable/safe, but after that personal responsibility comes in. Sure, some adults are more functional than others, but the world has small dangers to navigate. If you choose to buy deep fried foods this is one of them.

Keep in mind that if we passed a law saying that fried food needs to be served at 150 degrees or less (or whatever) McDonalds would figure that out...but local businesses wouldn't be able to comply/buy the equipment nearly so easily and would be at that much more of a disadvantage. We don't hear these "got burned" stories when they relate to small businesses because they aren't behemoths, but there's no way it isn't happening even more often per capita with them given the lack of central policies/equipment.

I could go on forever, but no: food often comes from boiling water, ovens, flames, etc. It is hot. As long as the entity distributing the food takes reasonable and effective precautions (i.e. placing it in a reliable container) the consumer (or consumer's parents) are reasonable for eating it non-stupidly.

I try to get her to set a target leaving time so she can start saying goodbye for said hour while I do something other than hang out by the door, but that is apparently a ridiculous thing to think.

BotW doesn't work for a few people, to be fair, but I assume those people wouldn't like Tears either.

I was honestly fine with that because if you have seen the ending to one Zelda game, you have seen them all. They really don't differ by that much. Considering this game was the one to try and change the formula for Zelda, having a brief ending worked out better than seeing the same one for the 1000th time.
I mean, they could have changed the formula in the other direction and made a more interesting ending...that would have been OK. Or at least made an ending that didn't seem like it was waiting for a DLC better ending, which might have been the original idea for Tears? That said, yeah, it wasn't as if it was unexpected.

Chiropractors are closer to masseuses than doctors. They can make you feel better for a while by straightening things out, but there are very few problems they actually solve. If you go to one consistently (like they want you to do) they can keep you straightened out a good percentage of the time, which has some value, but it's similar to how getting a massage regularly would keep you feeling good.

And then to add to that: almost all of them are convinced that they are accomplishing more than they are...and many/most add in a lot of pseudoscientific nonsense as well. Most problematically they aren't bound by the Hioppocratic oath so "do no harm" isn't hard cooked into what they do (especially the pseudoscience-prone ones). The overall package isn't worth it for most people, I say, although they do enough good in some situations that they can/should exist.

TopicLawn mowing advice

The eternal homeowner challenge (outside of rock/etc). If you have neighbors watching you/HOA rules/county rules there really isn't any alternative to taking care of it.

I suppose my advice is don't skimp on the equipment cost. The better gear you find the faster it will go. I have a battery-operated Ego myself: it's environmentally friendly (but not really any different in effort from a gas powered mower).

If you have the space, though, consider buying a (used?) riding mower...even for a "normal sized" yard. Those get the job done QUICK and the cost isn't a big issue in the long run (certainly compared to paying others to do it). Better yet get together with your neighbors if you're building at the same time and buy one together: maybe four of you can agree to trade off on each others' lawns such that you're only actually mowing once per month or so. They're gas users, but they're more efficient than push mowers so they're probably not much different environmentally (and you're further from it so you don't smell nearly so gassy). If your yard is flat and uncomplicated I very much doubt you'll regret it.

My parents have a cabin with a flat 1/3 acreish yard and a riding mower. It seems like a ridiculous thing to own, but it's so nice to whip through the chore and relax that I would buy another one if it ever breaks down. If you can find an electric one these days...better yet.

Anyways, no, mandatory evacuations aren't a Minnesota thing. Our freeways get shut down by snow sometimes and we CAN'T leave small towns for a day or two (particularly in the southern part of the state) but the Twin Cities just keep rolling. Except for all the cold days kids get now. In MY day...!

When my wife went back to working full time we agreed that we would instacart whenever it felt convenient to remove a chore, and we have. We might go to the grocery store 60% of the time and instacart 40% of the time. Like someone said if you want to be certain that you won't get the weird produce you need to go yourself, but otherwise it's pretty slick: whatever you order almost always shows up in 90 minutes or so. She'd know how much it costs better than me, but it's on the order of $10...not bad considering gas and time and all.

So...yeah, online is here today if you're in the city/'burbs.
