I don't see how the package deal situation couldn't be tweaked to also be how Link and [insert partner character] work. Like, say we go with Navi. She can have all the vocal agency in the partnership, but she's too small and weak to have any physical agency, so all of that goes to Link. Like if Silent Bob was the only one in his partnership that has an actual body, and Jay is a ghost or a head in a jar or something.

It's not perfect, obviously, but I'm not a filmmaker. Still though, I'm convinced that it could work if done right. Though I do admit that it would be risky, difficult, and make for an awful movie if not.

Silent Bob being silent is literally written into his character, though. Literally part of his name. The only reason Link as a silent protagonist works is because in video game form, Link is the player. So you are making the decisions for Link and playing out his actions, and the characters are talking to you.

When you put that in film, Link is no longer the audience unless they take a drastic approach. Unless they built being silent into his character for the movie, and make a conscious effort to explain it, I don't see this working.

Link being silent didn't even translate to the cartoon. He was the opposite of silent in that.

I will say though, i think it could work if they didn't just ignore the elephant of him not talking and actually gave a reason for it

Tbh I think whether Link speaks or not in a movie, half the fanbase will be happy and half the fanbase will be upset. So you're going to make people angry no matter what you do

Good thought, but I don't think it's totally the same tbh. Jay and Silent Bob are almost a package deal and almost feel/act as one protag in some instances. And even if not, I see Jay as the main driving force with Bob as an equal or lesser motivating character.

Link is an audience proxy character, and those work different in games and video. In games, audience proxies can afford to be silent since we're directing the events with our actions. Link doesn't need to react to supporting characters because his reactions are (usually) our reactions.

In video, audience proxies need to ask questions and drive parts of the story in a way to relay information to the viewer that might not otherwise be made explicit, which is very hard to do if they're silent.

Beyond that, there's no reason for Link not to speak in a movie outside of some misguided sense of tradition.

This is pretty much why i don't think it could work.

In a video game it's ok to have a silent protagonist because we are guiding the protag and it's almost like the audience is speaking to us. In a movie, we see the protagonist as a separate character. It's a completely different point of view and reads totally different when we are watching the events of the movie rather than participating in it.

I get what you're saying, and it's easy to say this, but I think it's a lot easier said than actually done

Would love to be pointed to an example where there was a character in film that was silent the entire time, without it being a part of the plot, and it worked for the actual film and didn't feel awkward

It would be funny as a short running gag in the beginning of the movie or in the trailer or something but I don't see how it could work for a full feature

TC started this topic and has been very upfront about being a killer main. You waltzed into this topic trying to tear him down for trying to feel good about his progress. You are the one who has basically said he isn't as good as thinks he is, due to lack of experience in the game.

if you are going to challenge him, put your money where your mouth is and play him on the terms of the topic, with him as killer. If not, stfu and carry on.

No idea. If you had to do the same amount of gens though you'd pretty much only be able to win by hatch
