traversing down dark roads was a fairly common piece of imagery throughout the show, though, so i'm reluctant to start advocating for cutting stuff like that.

i am p open minded in relation to it overall though. yeah, some things could have done with clearcut answers but overall I was in awe at how enjoyable the entire journey was, bursting at the seams with humour, heart, tension and more besides. part of me almost respects how they didn't go out of their way to tie everything up in a neat little package: it was its own beast until the end.

kinda sad that there is nothing else like it on tv now tbh

I want to make sure I'm reading this right. TC is praising this week's episode for not having blatant character deconstruction like the other ones? But... but...

I think it p undeniably was not as awkwardly done as in other eps like the end of 3 or 2/4.

Character deconstruction has been done in r&m before but then (and in ep 6 imo) it was teased out as part of the main plot rather than being monologued/expositioned into existence.

I loved 1 and 2. Obviously 1 is quite dated in retrospect but was amazing at the time. 2 is just a stone cold classic.

3 was good but I never quite liked the characters/setting as much as I did 2. Postgame was really good though.

think the only other one I played was 5 and tbh I found the 'tactical' element of the boss battles kinda tiresome.

a lot of 'key' stuff was actually really well done; the fight scenes, bar some screwy editing in places, were mostly very good. the group banter was also great again. Danny got some imo unfair criticism in IF but they managed to make his more annoying tendencies work and actually serve as some characterisation.

they also did a good job at building dramatic tension in places where it almost had no right to be (which i will get back to).

problems arise with stuff like:
- the hand (who I actually thought were okay even in dds2) ended up being a bit of a damp squib. Nobu in dds1 was a terrifying foe: why do all his supposed superiors end up being mostly genero-ninja dudes? Gao has some wackily edited magic and that's about it. for all her praise, weaver just felt like the infinite number of supposedly complex big bads we have nowadays.
- the stakes don't feel sufficiently high enough for a lot of it which is why i felt it impressive that they managed to build tension p decently at times. they want to get the awfully named 'substance' and...that's it?
- they are extremely inconsistent with power levels/abilities and the like. i think the last ep is the first time JJ actually shows her strength outside of moving large objects. yeah, krysten ritter isn't amazing with the physical stuff but in earlier eps she just seemed to be there to act sarcastic. a few characters suffered from this. the 'black sky' is another example of where fighting ability varies massively depending on the plot.
- the first 2 eps are basically recaps.


so yeah idk I kinda enjoyed it for the most part. it is kinda disappointing in a sense though, when you think back to the initial dds1 hype.

Diamondback is unfairly maligned and is quite fun if you can (again this is a universe with a bulletproof man and blind ninja dudes) just enjoy how zany he is.

everything surrounding him is just kinda...bad though. lots of contrived political scheming that the writers obviously thought was clever and not just needlessly contrived and full of coincidences to work. guess the weapon stuff was an okay way of letting luke be in danger though.

it's just a pity because the early stuff is really good and the style of the show is off the charts.

fwiw i dont think iron fist is *that* bad but it definitely feels like the sloppiest of the shows

while there's obviously issues with dd s2, I do feel a lot of people have a disproportionate and kinda strange dislike for the hand as a concept more than anything.

like people seem to really resent the idea of ninjas in itself in a tv series involving a bullet proof man and a blind ninja dude etc etc. i feel people wouldn't care if they were genero grunts or something.

that said i really found the pivots in s2 to be kinda awkward e.g. first 4 eps revolve around the punisher, next few around the court case, next few around the hand.

the whole 'x person or nation did a bad thing, should we ERASE!!!! them too???" shtick is fairly threadbare when you consider that in all such examples, the badness of said person or thing tends to be incidental to their existence as opposed to something like the confederacy which was literally built on ideals of racial superiority and slave ownership (oh and muh state rights lol).

that being said, distancing ourselves from the celebration of people who were certifiably awful isn't a bad thing. there is obviously a difference between MLK having views that wouldn't be out of place in his time and bill cosby freaking raping people though.

I think you misunderstand. Conservative in and of itself is not related to neo Nazi.

But the alt-right was created by a literal Nazi. Alt-right leaders are literally high ranking members of the current administration. Our current President just said that the people trying to stop a literal march of literally armed literal Nazis were just as bad as the Nazis themselves.

The current American Republican Party has fancied themselves the protectors of conservatism and their current leader has courted the interests of literal Nazis.

You can be a conservative and be unrelated to Nazis. Conservatives did it for years. No one called Bush a Nazi... or Reagan. But it's hard to support Trump and not, at the very least, turn a blind eye to the Nazi influences.

I understand that much. But as I mentioned before, the problem is that the current liberal political flowchart always starts off with Republicans and almost always ends in either "white supremacist" or "Nazi". This is unfair in particular because while I'd be the first to agree that the majority of those two are part of the right, that doesn't necessarily conclude that everyone on there is as well. Hell, my father lived down in NC as a black man for a good part of his early life and he was a longtime Republican in the second half. Do people not understand how that state of mind can have nothing to do with the viewpoint of one's skin? This "us vs. them" attitude didn't start with Trump, and neither will it end with him. Is this enough of a catalyst for the average person to go "yep, I can only ever see this one way from now on"? I believe so. What bugs me is that people seem to think this type of behavior is exclusively endorsed by Trump, when all the evidence presented so far doesn't really do that.

Sure, saying "both sides are responsible" is a bold statement to make. But to an extent, I feel it would be a stretch to say that the left didn't instigate even a little bit, in order to discredit that claim. Sure, one side mowed down the other with a car and that's fricking terrible beyond words.

But is the knee-jerk reaction of "fuck Nazis, punch everyone there" the appropriate long-term goal here? There doesn't seem to be an end goal in general besides "Fuck Trump", which I'm sure is a multi-point objective that doesn't have violence anywhere on it.
