But during those 45 minutes, you're cleaning the floors, cleaning the bathroom, folding a separate load of sheets or kids clothes (yes, it's common to have multiple loads of laundry to do in a day). It's not like you just sit on your hands while the laundry machines are going. There's plenty of other cleaning to do, housework, handyman stuff, bills... it really almost never ends.

It does seem like it never ends. In the summer my kids will do their own clothes and cook some. I view my goal during the school year is to do every thing that needs to be done so when my kids and wife are home we have free time to do whatever we'd like to do whenever we'd like. When working, it felt like almost all free time my wife and I had were household related or some errands we had to do.

Exactly. I swear the only real time we get to ourselves is after the kids are in bed. And even THEN we may be trying to tidy up a few things we couldn't get to. The amount of naïveté in this topic is astounding. Anyone who thinks having kids is a cakewalk is in for a rude awakening. It's a non-stop job.

Oh, we just need to manage our time better, really? Every moment can erupt with any number of unexpected, unforeseen little disasters, like my kid shitting on the couch. Some things you can't plan for, and when you have kids, unplanned for things occur by the hour. And that's on a good day.

That said, I love being a dad. It's a lot of work, but it's easily the most rewarding experience I've ever had. Don't mean to paint it like it's all doom and gloom.

Well, things are only as hard as you perceive them to be, anyway. Household chores aren't hard to me at all, but other people might find them to be a huge headache.

And like I said, when you have kids, your house will be dirty on a daily basis. Whether or not you choose to clean it is another matter, but there's work to be done daily.

Anyone who thinks you can skimp on cleaning the house when you have kids either:

A. don't have kids of their own yet, or
B. are comfortable living in a dirty house.

Kids will tear your house apart on a daily basis, drop food all over, pee on the floor or furniture, etc. Kids are messy. Just this week my one-year old managed to shit on the couch twice (my fault, I thought I could get away with cleaning up after dinner, took her diaper off while I was cleaning her and figured I had five minutes to do dishes. Nooooope) There's no avoiding it. Cleaning is a part of your daily routine. Laundry machines won't fold and put away your laundry for you (yet). Not everyone has a dishwasher, and they don't load or unload themselves.

Music has that ability to enhance a memory, for better or worse. But even when it's sad it can be beautiful.

What you said about goosebumps - for me that's Dust in the Wind by Kansas. I have a lot of musical memories with my mother, but that song specifically would make me cry for years. Still get a bit choked up when I hear it. She played guitar and had a beautiful singing voice, and that was one of the songs she loved to play.

I have a very specific memory of her sitting on the trunk of her car in the parking lot outside our apartment. Warm summer day, golden haze from the setting sun, her hair glowing in the light. She had on a blue sort of tank top with spaghetti straps, cut off jean shorts, barefoot, guitar in her lap with the neck pointing toward the sun, she's watching her fingers on the fret, looking relaxed yet focused, playing Dust in the Wind.

It's probably my most vivid memory of her. I remember it so clearly, even though sometimes small details change (what car she had at the time, color of her top). I used to avoid that song when it came up because it would make me sad, but now I'm thankful that it's provided me this beautiful gift. Better than a thousand photos or videos, because it's mine, and mine alone.

My wife's grandparents are from Ireland, and they have little black licorice chews in their house. Her grandfather calls them "n***** babies" and every time I hear it, it makes me very uncomfortable, but I love black licorice and usually just awkwardly agree to take some. He's a nice guy and I've never heard him say anything remotely racist (outside of that, of course).

My wife says that's just what they call them in Ireland. Maybe not everywhere, and probably less and less among younger generations, but apparently that's a thing.

Sorry, I'm at work and there's a lot to address but I'll try to.

She was in her late 20s when she came out (she's in her early-mid 30s now). It was after our very religious, very anti-gay grandmother passed away. We've spoken about that, and she said she didn't come out because she didn't want to upset or disappoint our grandmother. She was a wonderful woman, just from an era and a religious background that looked at homosexuality as a sin, end of story.

Didn't mean to be insulting insinuating she was solely seeking attention, as if her coming out was any less valid. But I don't completely shy away from that insinuation. If you find that insulting, I apologize, but without going through her history and patterns of behavior and her personality, which would take a lot of time, I couldn't properly frame what it is that I meant. Suffice to say, you'd have to know my cousin to understand.

To be perfectly clear, I don't really care. As long as she's happy and her partner, whatever gender her partner may be, treats her well, then great. Go forth and be merry.

Just find it a bit curious, because when she came out as a lesbian, she came out with both barrels blasting the door off of the closet. She was so in-your-face with letting everyone know she is gay and proud, posting all the time about how she was going to gay bars and what female celebrity she was crushing on at the moment.

In hindsight, it all looks like a cry for attention. Haven't spoken to her about it. I'm unsure if that was just a phase she went through, or if perhaps she's bisexual. But man alive was she ever vocal about being gay. She still posts stuff supporting equal rights and gay pride, alongside posts fawning over her new boyfriend.

tl;dr - see topic title

Some stuff you just sort of stumble across, though. Absolutely in love with this band Bent Knee right now. Never would've heard of them save for they were the opening act for part of Dillinger Escape Plan's farewell tour.
