In the UK it's 28 days paid holiday + additional bank holidays which is an extra 8 days per year. All this is paid. And if you're ill then that's a different thing - you get paid sick leave (with some limits) but it's not taken out of your holiday entitlement.

When I learned that USA citizens have to take sick leave as part of their holidays I didn't believe it. So cruel.

TopicTurn-based RPGs where the main character is a woman, excluding create-character?
threetimes
08/30/25 10:57:00 AM

Ara Fell: Enhanced Edition. The lead character is a girl called Lita and the game is turn-based even though it's a relatively recent release. This is the best version to play as it's much longer with lots of additional content and was released on the PS4. (Original game was on Steam.) It's really good, slightly comic and with a style based on traditional JRPGs.

Here's my (official - cos I wrote a guide for it) summary:
Ara Fell started life as an RPG Maker 2003 project. This 16-bit era Japanese-style RPG has since been released on Steam and has now been re-released in a greatly expanded form with many enhancements, including "a revamped battle system, new character classes and skills, new side quests, an overhauled UI, upgraded crafting system, new enchanting system, enhanced aspect ratios, new difficulty modes, an autosave feature, Twitch integration, and more!" (from Steam).

Although the game is the creation of an American team they have done more than simply honour the JRPG tradition: they have made a fantastic turn-based RPG about a plucky bow-wielding teenage girl (and allies) who live on a floating land that has some troubling Vampires determined to do no good at all. It reminds me of the first Suikoden and early Dragon Quests with the engaging story and world lore, expressive character sprites, interesting side-quests, and imaginative boss fights.

US police lack decent training and don't know how to de-escalate situations. In fact, they seem to escalate aggression. There's a video of police from other countries watching stuff and learning about US cops and they are shocked to put it mildly Many police forces require a degree or have 2 or three years of training - and that's without being armed. Armed police have additional training.

I hate mayonnaise because I hate anything with vinegar. We don't have the same mayo culture in the UK but many places use it on sandwiches (I'm looking at you, Marks and Spencers) which annoys the hell out of me. Another thing I dislike about it is that it disguises the food so you can't see exactly what you are eating. Butter is better.

ES was also released on the Xbox but the PS3 version was much longer with extra characters, and tougher so that is definitely the version to play. One thing to know is that it didn't have any trophies if that's something you care about. The music and art style are really great but I found the battle system took a while to get used to as it involved timing parries and counters.

I'd second Resonance of Fate if you like RPGs although ROF was later released on the PS4. It has a very distinctive art style - steam punkish and minimal colours but your 3 characters can dress up in a huge array of great modern day clothing/hairstyles eye colour etc. Great fun gun sort-of-turn based battle system.

And yeah Tokyo Jungle was tough but lots of fun.

Maybe the real (secret) plan is to force people to use public transport or bikes when the cost of owning a car becomes prohibitive. But the UK public transport system is bad. For example, my local buses don't run after 6pm or on Sundays, and the nearest train station is a two mile walk and then, is just a slow branch line.)

Make the kids play a game where the rules made no sense and it was dangerous.

Dark Chronicle/Dark Cloud 2 has the best fishing minigame of any JRPG ever made. I dunno why they all try to make their own garbage fishing minigame instead of just taking the one from Dark Chronicle.

It also has an amazingly fun golf minigame.

I concur. I spent ages on the fishing and the fish competitions, and on spheda (golf). I love the game but it's seriously so packed with things to do that it could take over your life for a long time. The weapon upgrade system is very good too.

It was one of my favourite games but I couldn't play it today - I tried a couple of years ago and it was just too overwhelming.

Thanatos_the_Great posted...
Like others have said, Blair is now mostly remembered for being the man who took Britain into the illegal war in Iraq on a pack of lies. He was widely characterised as the time as George W Bush's "poodle" and is still remembered that way. On the rare occasion pollsters ask the public what they think of Blair, the results are negative.

As for his government more generally, IMO it was awful. They did do some good things, e.g. ending legal discrimination against gay people and putting significantly more money into the NHS - but that money was put in through expensive (and pointless) part-privatisation borrowing arrangements that are still costing the taxpayer heavily to this day as we repay them. Despite supposedly being a Labour government, they were very right-wing, privatising public services even more than the preceding Conservatives had, deregulating finance even further than the Conservatives (which left Britain far more exposed than we could have been to the 2007-8 global crash), introducing authoritarian policing and so-called anti-terrorism laws using 9/11 as an excuse, and more.

There's a small number of people who still idolise Blair, but most people regard them as weirdos and cranks. Unfortunately those weirdos and cranks are disproportionately represented in the media, and among those who hold power in the Labour Party, of which they seized control again in 2020 by their leadership candidate shamelessly lying about who he was and what he would do; consequently that man, Keir Starmer, is now Prime Minister, and he lets himself be guided in everything he does by those Blairite weirdos.

This is accurate. Blair was Tory-lite and didn't do enough to counteract the negative impact from so many years of right wing government. BUT his govt. did something very significant for families with the Sure Start centres which were aimed at very young children and had a very positive effect on health and well-being in poorer communities. Sadly, funding was cut by later Tory governments and most centres closed. As is common - right wing governments preach about the importance of families but rarely do anything positive to support children.

This reminds me of what happened in the UK when Jeremy Corbyn was elected leader of the Labour Party. He was consistently attacked by Labour's right wing and a campaign started which accused him of anti Semitism because he'd been a supporter of Palestine. Obviously it was all much more complex than this but it was nasty and his attackers succeeded in damaging his reputation despite the great support he had from younger people especially. In the end he lost the general election to Boris Johnson and more years of Tory chaos.

I hope Mamdani manages to fend off attacks on him.
