By the end he was no longer my favorite but he was for most of the series.

I actually have a top 55 character list archived on another board. Written before the last book was out.

Here was the top 5 then:
1. Mat
2. Perrin
3. Nynaeve
4. Aviendha
5. Min

Rand would have entered that top 5 after the last book though.

Was thinking about Luffy a bit and I think if i was picking an arc to show what he is like as a friend (and eliminating Whole Cake for being too long) I'd go with Drum island.

Chapters 130-154
Episodes 78-91

Not a real long arc and I think it's really strong as an example of what kind of friend Luffy is.

Just in case you feel like watching/reading a bit more lol.

Yeah episodes 1-8, or up to chapter 21 gets you far enough imo.

And you could even just do eps 4-8 / chapters 8-21 to get a solid feel for the character.

But if you want a stronger/longer arc to show even more that can be chosen!

Honestly I'm with you on a bunch of that.

It's why I hesitate to recommend anime to people who haven't watched it before, because either know basically whatever I pick there are going to be weird stuff in it that will make them hesitate to continue. I never know who is going to not be able to get past it.

What's weird is my brother usually likes animation. He loved Castlevania and Invincible. It's a totally different animation style but he liked Arcane too. We talked a bit about why he bounces off anime so hard but we couldn't nail down what it was. It isn't subtitles because we grew up together watching foreign movies like Battle Royale and various ones from Hong Kong.

Like he was kinda enjoying Rokka until the one cat guy assassin showed up and had an annoying laugh and talked with "nya" in his sentences. That one guy really dragged the anime down for him, lol. Meanwhile an anime connoisseur like me didn't even register him as the slightest bit abnormal or annoying.
Anime can be very...quirky.

It has a lot of tropes and gags that if you haven't encountered them before can just be very weird and off-putting.
