He's good but ultimately fails, while McGilded actually manages to get a Not Guilty verdict at the end.

And Edgeworth has been a defendant before
Edgeworth objects to his own Not Guilty verdict to take the fall for DL-6!
The Phoenix Wright Omnibus is maybe the laziest reference they could've made.

I'm very fond of McGilded's theme (I know others use it but it feels like it belongs to him)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VCedvpAS3Y

Edit: I wonder, is McGilded the most competent defendant we've had in the series? Instead of putting himself in greater jeopardy or interfering with our defence as so many others do, he actively defends himself, to great success!

In another AA game I believe this case would've swapped places with case 4- a tight pre-finale set-up case that subverts expectations vs a grand less important case with a big wacky cast. But it was a brilliant move to have it this way round, I doubt anyone expected our intro to British courts to go the way this case goes. They had to set up the jury, the new courtroom, new major characters, new gameplay mechanics, and they decide that's the perfect time to throw us for a loop with a guilty client, forged evidence, and a trial cut short. It's so good.

The meta-gaming here is great, the game rewards you for going out of your way to investigate the omnibus and plays on usual expectations (I was successfully fooled into thinking I had simply missed the big bloodstain on the floor lol). McGilded's version of events sounds exactly like a usual AA-style murder plot, and I was unsure of what the hell was actually going on until very late in the trial. It's chaotic in the best way, McGilded is a terrific villain who leaves such a lasting impression. I like the jury too, they add to the chaos with constantly being at each other's throats.

Regarding Para's issues, I take it that McGilded was perfectly happy to defend himself in court- we see later in the trial how adept he is at convincing the jury and framing Fairplay and Furst- and he simply picks Ryunosuke by chance because he happened to pop through that door. Of course, within the trial itself things break down a little, there's no reason he shouldn't trigger the smoke bomb when the jury start heavily leaning towards his guilt, but that's a minor point for me.

A very solid, memorable case that shows what this game is capable of. And the only case in the first game that doesn't go on for an hour too long.

Yes but nobody knew that before the murder!

I am sorry, Lairon.

@AriaOfBolo Hippowdon is spelled wrong in the opening post (but seeing as I'm the first vote for it I doubt it'll make a difference >_>)

A locked room mystery murder of a major character set across 3 rooms with a small cast and no court case could be compelling, tense, claustrophobic. Instead it's dull, repetitive, and drags on for far too long. There's not much substance here. We're supposed to find Nikolina very sympathetic but she bores me and I don't think the angle of her being super desperate and alone works when we've established she has the entire crew unquestioningly behind her.

I didn't hate playing through this, but that's pretty much entirely down to the wonderful Sholmes. And he of course becomes a main character and gets cooler things to do later on so it can't boost this case too much. And even then, they probably did one too many deduction dances here, and his theories are far more compelling than the truth. The tone of this case is really odd, they have instant emotional investment from the player with the brutal death of Kazuma this early on, but the case can't decide if it wants to be serious or goofy and oscillates between the two wildly.

Side note I really thought Hosonaga was going to be a long term recurring character after this, but we only see him again once in the whole duology! And this is very minor but why did Kazuma never simply bolt his door so Ryunosuke could wander around the cabin freely in the evening?

TeamRocketElite posted...
I forget, is Nikolina ever told the truth about what happened with Kazuma?
Yes, in the second game Sholmes mentions having told her the truth and helping her get to America.

This case also introduces the best jury member in the duology.
Fair, this is a great call back (as are the ship scenes in G2-5). But I credit the later cases for that, not this one!
OK I checked to see which ones made it, and most of the surviving Irons squeaked through the last round, so we'll see how many are left come R3.

Great Tusk - A
Walking Wake - A
Slither Wing - B
Flutter Mane - C
Roaring Moon - C

Iron Moth - B
Iron Bundle - C
Iron Jugulis - C
(Miraidon - C)
Iron Boulder - D
Iron Hands - D
Iron Treads - D
Iron Valiant - D

Last standing? My bet is on Volcarona :)
Yeah the 11th place thing seems really unfair to those bottom 5

Even more surprisingly, 7 (or 8) future and 5 past.
...wow, I definitely did not expect that
12/20 Paradoxes survived or 13/22 if you include the box legendaries (surprising!)
what's the past/future split here?
I think this case is a great introduction to the game's themes and characters, and shows how things are (somewhat) more grounded here than in the mainline entries. The presentation is a big step up on the other games, too. Ryunosuke and Kazuma are fleshed out well really quickly, and they waste no time delving into the game's political backdrop. Showing the British Empire from the Japanese POV was a wise way to start the game, and I imagine going back to this after playing through both games would be rewarding, there's a lot that's set up here.

The murder mystery itself is of course very simple, being a tutorial, and it goes on half an hour past its natural stopping point with the very silly plate switcheroo. I don't care for Nosa or Korekuta, either. But Auchi is the most I've liked a Paine by a long shot, and Jezaille is a terrific villain, drinking her own poison like that was an impressive move.

sorry, Rayquaza. This round format is going to infuriate me when I get a love+hate team combo.

featuring such misadventures as someone tripping over a power cord and forcing Keiji Inafune to rebuild Top Mans stage from memory right at the finish line.
lmao did this seriously happen, amazing
I didn't expect gen 5 to do that badly, but thinking about it it does make sense. It has a massive roster and there's a lot of hated filler in that gen to go along with the favs.

Oh no, the next round is 2v2? How many neat pokemon are going to be weighed down by a weak partner :O
I'd count star as either the main character or a co-lead, but define it however you want.

You could make a neat concept out of a leech character
idk maybe a sea urchin
I am concerned about how concerned I should be

Articuno's division was stacked, I wouldn't really call that a dud performance. Though Chandelure's was stacked too and it dominated, so maybe it is fair.

I think Eevee is a fair amount weaker than most of its evos.

Oh, right, I didn't recognise the name but Animal Well was in the Nindies showcase and looked really cool there. Lorelei had a very well made trailer too, but no idea how it'll play. Hopefully they're both future Game Pass games.

And I see Endless Ocean isn't reviewing well, oh well.

woo MZero. A great puzzler through and through!
Manaphy's design is straight up worse than Phione's imo, but of course Phione is the most pointless pokemon to ever exist.

I'm happy Minior and Masquerain both survived!
