And the NSO port looks much better than the Wii U version.

It's all a matter of preference. They both look great, but briefly playing the Wii U version, it's genuinely one of the best looking games I've ever seen. Along with the QoL improvements, it seems like the definitive way to play.

3D World was a good game, but a proper 3D Mario has a far different feel. They're usually not really levels based, aside from I guess Galaxy 2. They're more like a structured adventure game where the point isn't necessarily to just reach the flag/end star but to also consider how you get there

3D World in general had very little of that "how you get there," because most of them were straightforward.

Yes. This is what I'm saying. 3D World is a great game and it is a 3D Mario. I don't agree with Scott the Woz who claims that 3D Land and World are closer to 2D Mario games than 3D, but agree that they are far closer to just being traditional 2D Mario games in a 3D than we'd ever seen before.

2D Mario thrived on being easily accessible and easy to pick up and understand in a way that 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy 1 and 2 weren't. 3D Land and World felt like that exact same accessible philosophy and translated it to 3D. It feels like a middle-ground between these two styles. It's fun and well-made and I'd be down with more, but it's still quite different from Galaxy, Odyssey, 64, etc. and I remember plenty of Nintendo fans were upset with it. It absolutely lacked the challenge, the scope, and depth (especially in the movement systems) of those entries. This also happened during an era that some call Mario's bland era, where New Super Mario Bros. games oversaturated the market, the Paper Mario games became stale and uncreative, and Mario couldn't do anything beyond the usual classic levels types and 3D World didn't help with that. It was far more streamlined, simplistic, and safe compared to what came before on the N64, the Gamecube, and the Wii.

Now that we got Odyssey and 3D World got a glow up through the Switch version, it's easier than ever for people to love it for what it is and even prefer it to the other 3D games. However, I think people are being a bit disingenuous when they say "It wasn't any different from the changes made to other 3D Mario games!" Again, they are both very good. But they are different in meaningful ways. 3D World is not a substitute for a game like Odyssey or vice versa.

It's been pretty comfortable in Michigan. We got really high temperatures for a week or two in June, but it's been a consistent 70's - 80's since.

I'd much rather take heat than cold winters, ESPECIALLY after last winter. It was the first time I had to deal with snow in a decade, and of course it was the most brutal winter in modern history. Literally the first time a state of emergency had been declared for an ice storm in the area.

Heat is easy to avoid. Just use AC and minimize time spent outside in direct sunlight. And it doesn't make regular travel and errands more difficult with adverse weather. Extreme cold is brutal though. It makes everything hurt and is torture trying to navigate through high winds and snow and ice. Too much precipitation and you're pretty much stranded.

Here in Minnesota, weve been pretty lucky the last few years. Not too bad of snow or sun 0 degree F (-16 C) weather. So the roads and going outside arent bad. I think my body is just built for the cold anyways. If its above 70 F and even remotely humid, Im uncomfortable. Meanwhile, I am happily able to walk around Minneapolis during the winter outside of the most extreme cold conditions of I walk and bundle up.

Living in a place that is cool but comfortable with grey cloudy skies would be paradise to me.

I despise the heat so much. I'd take the winter over this. Maybe it's the Minnesotan in me, but I feel fine if it's 20 F or above. Will be out walking and all. I can even handle lower temperatures if there is no wind, sun, and get a good walking pace going.

I'll never get why warm climates are so well regarded. I lived in the Caribbean (Cartagena, Colombia) for over a year and it was hell. Even nighttime was uncomfortably humid.

I actually like Super Mario 3D World more than the Galaxy games, although Odyssey is at the top.

3D World is a great game and its a matter of preference. But it wasnt a replacement for a proper mainline 3D Mario. It was not the game the system needed at the time. Thankfully, now that its been re-released and improved on the Switch and we got Odyssey, in my opinion, the best 3D Mario, people are able to look at World in a new light and appreciate it for what it is.

I mean, Nintendo has certainly supported the Switch, so that isnt an issue if that discouraged you from buying one.

I actually recently purchased a Wii U for the first time. I was hesitant since there were so few exclusives still worth buying on the console, but I had the disposable income and wanted to try the gamepad out for myself, so I purchased it.

I do like the console. There is a real novelty to the Gamepad and it's more comfortable than I expected (although still not perfect). Plus, before the Switch was a thing, I can imagine how cool off TV play must have been in spite of its limitation (The streaming distance really is terrible and some games look so bad on the low-res screen that they aren't even worth it).

Still, while I find the system has its charm, I think the gamepad idea was fundamentally flawed. People talk about the potential but that fact that even Nintendo couldn't come up with any interesting ideas makes me think that it really never did. It would be great for some asymmetrical multiplayer games (A DND game where the DM controller what happens on the gamepad sounds like a dream come true) but for a single-player experience, I don't think the potential was there.

This is a fatal flaw, as the gamepad made the system both too expensive for casual audiences AND too underpowered to compete against its competition. Power isn't everything (I will defend the Switch against these criticisms) but when it fills to outperform the Xbox 360 (which was 7 years old at the time) while not giving anything else in return with the Gamepad, it really was a fundamentally flawed concept.

The game library was solid, but incredibly safe, and I'd argue the system didn't have a single universal system seller in its entire lifetime. It needed Breath of the Wild earlier (which today is known more as a Switch launch title than a Wii U game) or a Mario Odyssey. Something big that everyone needs to play. Their mainline 3D Mario game is great, but it's not a replacement for classic 3D Mario and not the game the system needed at the time.

So, overall, the system is charming and I can see why people have fondness for it. I'm not taking away people's nostalgic memories for it. But I also think people need to be realistic and understand what a deeply flawed console it was and why its failure wasn't at all surprising.

We had a topic asking about peoples plans for June, so thought Id continue in the same spirit here.

Have the 4th off, which I am spending with my a barbecue with my family. I wont go TMI or anything (plus not sure how much gamefaqs like this discussion lol) but I did join a monthly kink event, so the real party begins later that night!

Other than that, turning 35 this month. By pure coincidence, my best friend is only one day younger than me, so we are trying to celebrate together with some friends. Nothing big. Just a hang out at his house with games and drinks. Hes married with two kids, so hes busy and I value when we can get together like this.

Might try the yearly sci fi and fantasy convention that goes on every year, but may want to save money. I dunno. Theres always next year.

What are your plans?

Continents are more cultural than geographic anyways. Some countries consider both North and South America two separate continents, while other cultures consider them a single continent. Neither are wrong. Just different. It doesn't really make much sense for Europe and Asia to be considered separate when they are mostly a single connected landmass but again, it makes a bit for sense on a cultural level (while still being much more complex than that).

It's low on my list of concerns. Yeah, the prices of things have gone up, but I am fortunate enough to be in a position where I'm still doing fine. My income and living situation (Only have to provide for myself) are enough that I can comfortably afford everything I need and still be building up my savings. No to both. I enjoy drinking, but mostly only do it for social occasions these days. I thought it would be difficult, when I told myself no and didn't keep any beer in the house, it was easier than I expected. Feeling much better and when I can drink, it's far more special than when I had a beer or two after work.

As for the Switch 2, I'm boycotting it in hopes that something will stick (although realize that it more likely than not won't make a difference) to combat these shitty business practices. They've made it easy by having nothing but Mario Kart at launch. I knew some gamers were easily parted from their money before this, but the amount of bootlickers and blind fanboys for the Switch 2 is astonishing.

Theres a rumor that they originally intended for Cloud to be the PS2 guest, but talks fell through (likely moreso on Square Enixs hand, since theyre stingy with the FF IP, especially back then).

Make sense. As a kid, I always thought a Final Fantasy character like Cloud, Auron, or Squall or Dante from Devil May Cry would have made more sense, even though older me understands that they don't own those IPs so it would have been more difficult. As someone who never played Tekken, kid me genuinely felt angry and betrayed because console wars were serious business at that age lol.

Digressing a bit, but I am still shocked that they went with Yoda as the guest character for the 360 version of Soul Calibur 4. It's really cool, but there were so many other choices in the Star Wars universe that you'd have expected them to choose first.

The only real deficiency of the GC layout is that B+X and B+Y are hard to hit simultaneously, as are any 3-button combos that use B. In practice, though, opposing pairs are also awkward to hit with a diamond layout (though not as awkward as B+X/Y on the GC) and most games will try to avoid that anyway (which can translate easily to the GC controller), so that really just leaves trios as the problem (and that's really niche).

I know some people were able to get used to it. Having put over a hundred hours into the PS2 version, it was difficult to adjust to playing the Gamecube version when I had a chance.

I do stand by that the Nintendo Switch Pro controller is their best. Besides the better button layout, it actually has a usable D-Pad as well.

I love the Gamecube controller as much as the next guy and it feels amazing when it's an official Nintendo Controller (the 3rd party ones never feel as good) and the game is designed for it (The Wind Waker, Mario Sunshine, etc.). However, there's a fair amount of games where it's an active detriment. Soul Calibur 2 is my personal example, with the button layout making it hard to execute your moves and combos efficiently. I'm told Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was another series where the control wasn't ideal. There are other examples of this being the case.

It's a great controller, but there is a reason that the Diamond formation of the buttons became the standard. I'm going with the Pro controller. Feels amazing in the hands and I love the Gyro controls built into it. My only wish is that it were a bit heavier and (maybe this will be controversial) but for Nintendo to switch the places of X and Y and A and B because they're in the wrong spots! >_<

A few months ago I got Japanese Pokemon Colosseum along with the Japanese bonus disc for $120, not including shipping. I was told those go for around 200 so I think I got a pretty good deal.

Nice. How did it differ from the other versions and what was on the bonus disc?

had no idea twilight princess was worth that much these days

A lot of Gamecube games have shot up in price these days. Wind Waker is going for $65-70. Double Dash usually costs the same. The Gamecube Mario Party games usually will cost at least $40 each. It was the worst selling yet people see how fantastic the console really was these days.
