I am fundamentally morally opposed to you and her having done this I'm not going to lie. I'm not religious but I was raised Catholic and the idea of someone that young committing suicide makes me feel deeply uncomfortable regardless of the circumstances. Its a visceral reaction.
I played it modded to have no carry limit and infinite sprint and that made a lot of difference to me if you are playing it on PC. Went from feeling shit to feeling fun with infinite sprint in particular.
I've been to both Disneyland and Disneyworld fairly recently. My work sent me out to LA a year and a half ago my wife flew out to join me and I extended the stay a day to go to Disneyland.

When I went to world it was the same time of year (right around Halloween) a year later it was for a vacation and we stayed at a resort near the park (Coronado Springs). The parks are very similar if all you want to go to are things that exist in both parks like the magic kingdom or Galaxys Edge (star wars land) but I liked Orlando a lot more overall. Felt way less overpopulated and staying at a Disney hotel made it so easy to the parks. Had an app on my phone that was my room key and I could also just look at the bus times. Hung out in a cafe and then when the bus was a few minutes out to the park we wanted to go to we would stroll out to ride to the parks. Lovely.

So basically the same as in the US - socialism exists for the rich in the form of tax cuts and leniency by the legal system, but for no one else.

The US actually spends trillions of dollars every year on social welfare programs. social security (for the old and disabled), Medicare, medicaid, and food stamps being some of the biggest ones.

Its always weird to me when people say the US doesn't provide anything for poor people because it indicates that its probably not a poor person saying that because actual poor people know that these programs exist and use them.
My impression is that they were socialist towards the people that thought of as "true aryans" and thought everyone else should be subjugated, killed, or left to starve if they were incapable of helping themselves.

Do you guys get what I mean? Like if some other sperm took my place in the baby making process. Would my body and mind be totally different?

This breaks the whole alternate universe twin thing for me in sci-fi. Literally if you had the same parents and they picked a different day or even millisecond to do the sexy time you would look like a sibling not some exact twin of yourself. Unless the split in timelines happened after you were born there would be a totally different person in place of you even if that person had the same two parents.

This effect actually does protect most species from massive radiation damage like space events or nuclear weapons being detonated though. A much larger % of sperm are derpy after something like that but those little dudes all lose the race so the next generation isn't born fucked up just the generation that suffered the radiation.

Life is complicated is all I can say. Two days ago my wife dropped on me that she wanted a divorce because I wasn't listening to her talking about whatever shit she was watching on TikTok and then she said "Are you even listening to me?" and I had to say no because since we met a few years ago she has started to believe in all sorts of silly shit involving "WitchTok" and crystals and other bullshit that I have always stressed to her I think is total bullshit.

So that is my life. But its fine because then we made up and she got a haircut and she doesn't want a divorce anymore because maybe that was just her time of the month. Because of course. Because none of this shit makes sense.

So on the one hand I have my wife believing in silly new age shit.

On the other hand my Mom, mega catholic, is going to talk to me about old age shit involving the Church and having kids and all that good stuff.

Fuck me.

Meanwhile I exited religion when I was about 12 and it stopped making sense to me except for those moments when I feel like sanity has exited the building and I ask Jesus, God, and every one of the saints to HELP ME!!!!

I should have said 9th century. But yeah seems like they had a lot of stuff still standing 400 years after the fall of Rome.

There's still some Roman stuff still standing 1600 years after the fall of Rome.

Its hard to know how long Roman stuff lasted after the fall. This was an English poem dated somewhere around that time period.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ruin

This masonry is wondrous; fates broke it
courtyard pavements were smashed; the work of giants is decaying.
Roofs are fallen, ruinous towers,
the frosty gate with frost on cement is ravaged,
chipped roofs are torn, fallen,
undermined by old age. The grasp of the earth possesses
the mighty builders, perished and fallen,
the hard grasp of earth, until a hundred generations
of people have departed......

The people at the time were aware of the fact that were living in the ruins of a civilization that could build greater things than they were capable of.

Like huge Roman buildings everywhere? I'm trying to figure out how historically accurate any of this is.

Not sure about specific roman buildings but Britain was part of the Roman Empire for about 400 years.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Britain

The Romans owned everything south of Scotland and they built a wall across the island to keep out the people up North. The Anglo Saxons (Germans) flooded into whats now England and pushed the "Romano-Britains" (imagine celts, like the Irish are today that had been romanized by being part of the empire for centuries) into Wales.

Over the centuries the Anglo Saxons became "the English" and converted to Christianity and then in the 800's Britain was invaded be "the great heathen army" that was made up of northmen (danes, swedes, Norwegians).

https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/12/middleeast/israel-hostages-rescued-gaza-rafah-intl-hnk/index.html

The Israeli military said Monday it has rescued two hostages during a special operation conducted overnight in Rafah, in southern Gaza.
The hostages are 60-year-old Fernando Simon Marman and 70-year-old Louis Har, who were both taken 128 days ago during Hamas October 7th attack on Israel.
The two are in good medical condition and have been transferred for Sheba Medical Center at Tel HaShomer, said the Israel Defense Forces. The joint operation was done with the Israeli Security Agency and Israel Police, it said.

This is good for the hostages rescued but complicated for the people of Gaza. The Israelis now have proof that at least a portion of the hostages still being held are being held in Rafah which is the last city in Gaza that hasn't been overrun by Israeli forces and where about half the population of the strip has fled to in the face of the Israeli offensive.

That would make sense as an argument if I hadn't actually played Devil May Cry 1,2,3, and 4. Seriously go watch bits of the story from those games. This is what you are pearl clutching over.

I always found the hate against the Ninja Theory DMC weird. I've played all the games and beaten most of them (bear 1,3,DMC, and 5). Ninja theory's one was different but it was still good.

It especially weird to me that the narrative and presentation of the Dante character is what people went after. What was there in Dante that you liked so much that you were outraged by what you saw in the Ninja theory one? He doesn't express enough love for pizza? His hair is only white some of the time rather than all of the time?

No. The federal government looked at the 50 billion it was going to send to Ukraine and subtracted that from the 6150 billion dollar government spending and said "math is hard and it make head hurty" and they cancelled the government to pay for Ukraine.

The allied powers killed about 69,000 French people in bombing raids during WW2. We weren't trying to genocide the French. Urban warfare against an opponent willing to fight for every inch of ground is terrible.

Would any other great power be acting all that differently to how Israel is acting if it suffered an attack similar to the one on October 7th? I'm talking about China, Russia, the US, even smaller powers like France or the UK.

This is why they aren't saying anything. They could see themselves in Israel's position. The issue isn't just that the attack happened its that Hamas claims to govern a territory that has two million people in it, and they are saying they will repeat the attack again and again. Any major power would invade at that point.

This. My wife's family lives in St Louis and we live in the Denver metro. I challenge someone to do that 12 hour drive on I-70 and then claim the US is overpopulated.

The 600 mile stretch from Denver to Kansas City has nothing but small towns truck stops, and an Army base (Fort Riley).

American cheese is the best cheese for a cheeseburger because it melts without splitting.
I understand why Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th but I believe the attack was incredibly irrational. They launched an attack on a vastly more powerful enemy hoping that they would garner support from the region in the war that would be sparked by that attack.

That hasn't happened. They've lost most of their territory, most of the citizens they claim to represent have had to flee their homes and a large portion of the territory they govern is in ruins and the only support they've received is token support from Hezbollah in the form of firing potshots across the border and a lot of words from anyone else they imagined would support them.

Half the homes in the Gaza strip have been destroyed and most of the population is huddled on the border of Egypt in Rafah having fled their homes in portions of the strip that are currently battlegrounds or have already been seized by the Israelis.

They fire an RPG at the Israeli forces and the Israelis blow up an apartment complex to clear the area the RPG was fired from. There is nothing to be gained at this point they just keep losing more and more every day this continues.

Chipotle has a policy of getting non-gmo foods. Non gmo does cost more for obvious reasons though I'm not quite sure to what degree this could explain the price increases. Though to be fair opposing GMO foods isn't necessarily a left vs right issue though it does seem to correlate a bit. Its sort of a weird political mapping at this point. That is not a regular occurrence and is actually against the law. Doctors are not allowed to mention MAID to patients at all, only to respond should a patient bring it up to them.

The countries that allow euthanasia and assisted suicide vary in how they administer and regulate the practices, but Canada has several policies that set it apart from others. For example:
Belgian doctors are advised to avoid mentioning euthanasia to patients since it could be misinterpreted as medical advice. The Australian state of Victoria forbids doctors from raising euthanasia with patients. There are no such restrictions in Canada. The association of Canadian health professionals who provide euthanasia tells physicians and nurses to inform patients if they might qualify to be killed, as one of their possible clinical care options.

Deutschenlied posted...
Uh this is exactly when assisted suicide should be available. If your problem can't be fixed and will only get worse, then why shouldn't you be allowed to die? It's cruel and unethical to not allow someone that option.

Your name is really "Deutschenlied" and you need someone to explain to the potential dangers of euthanasia going too far?

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/doctor-suggested-assisted-suicide-daughter-mother-elson-1.4218669

Sheila Elson's 25-year-old daughter, Candice Lewis, has several medical conditions, including spina bifida, cerebral palsy and chronic seizure disorder.
During a hospital stay in St. Anthony last November, when Lewis was very sick, Elson said a doctor told her that her daughter was dying and that she had the option to end her life.

"His words were 'assisted suicide death was legal in Canada,'" she told CBC. "I was shocked, and said, 'Well, I'm not really interested,' and he told me I was being selfish."
According to Elson, Lewis was within earshot when the doctor made the comment which she said was quite traumatic for her daughter to hear.

Canada went from not allowing the practice at all to having doctors recommending it for people that are a "burden of the state" as soon as the practice was made legal.
DrizztLink posted...
Do you think the doctor makes the first decision about if someone wants to go through assisted suicide?

I think they play a part as does the rest of the society a person lives in and cultural expectations. There are massive cultural differences in suicide rates and I'd expect there to be massive cultural differences in euthanasia rates between cultures.

I don't want to live in a culture where there is an expectation that people who are depressed should just go to a doctor to sign off on getting euthanized.

Disturbing': Experts troubled by Canadas euthanasia laws

Alan Nichols had a history of depression and other medical issues, but none were life-threatening. When the 61-year-old Canadian was hospitalized in June 2019 over fears he might be suicidal, he asked his brother to bust him out as soon as possible.
Within a month, Nichols submitted a request to be euthanized and he was killed, despite concerns raised by his family and a nurse practitioner.
His application for euthanasia listed only one health condition as the reason for his request to die: hearing loss.

Here is another disturbing incident-

In one recording obtained by the AP, the hospitals director of ethics told Foley that for him to remain in the hospital, it would cost north of $1,500 a day. Foley replied that mentioning fees felt like coercion and asked what plan there was for his long-term care.
Roger, this is not my show, the ethicist responded. My piece of this was to talk to you, (to see) if you had an interest in assisted dying.
Foley said he had never previously mentioned euthanasia. The hospital says there is no prohibition on staff raising the issue.

So they basically brought up euthanasia for someone as a way to avoid the expense of a long hospital stay. The hospital isn't even denying that is what they did they are saying it was perfectly legal.
One worry I have with this sort of thing is that doctors will happily sign off on it for things like chronic diseases that don't have an effective medical treatment, even diseases that have a psychological component.

Many doctors see these people as a problem they can't fix and some doctors think that medically assisted suicide is a solution to the problem. Its a mistake to think that the profession itself confers people with some special sense of ethics.
