Played up until a Seymour battle many years ago, but after I died a few times I got enraged with having to sit through a long cutscene each time. That shouldn't be necessary with the Switch version, right? (and yet I don't really see ways to skip cutscenes...)

Enjoying the visuals but it just feels like stuff is happening atm with me not really "doing" much. Just got kidnapped by Rikku and crew. Always hated Rikku's male-gaze outfit. I thought we got to Besaid a lot faster - always kinda felt like this stuff was prologue, and I'm kinda over it! Only gotten experience once so far in 40+ minutes.

To Zanarkand is GOAT. Also enjoy the battle music.

Will need to be better about the overdrives because I totally botched both Auron and Tidus's, lol

the first hour is a bit of a slog. but yeah, I doubt they've added cutscene skip.

oh god what the hell why would they add so many QOL improvements to the switch ff7 and not port them to this

FFX's cutscenes are so good that it would be a crime to let you skip them

It doesn't let you skip even on ps4? wow

Yeah unfortunately there's no skipping on the Switch either. That one Seymour fight and another boss lategame are very annoying to redo because of the long cutscenes immediately preceding them, I've no idea why they didn't implement a skip cutscene feature.

Terrific game though, tag!

well I wouldn't get a game over besides some postgame stuff anyways so oh well

does ffx let you level-grind because i might be doing that if there's any risk of having to rewatch these scenez

You can definitely level grind. There are tricks that let you gain lots of Sphere levels in short order if you want to look those up and exploit them.

I think this might have been a common fate, definitely happened to me on my first playthrough. But I had mismanaged the sphere grid so badly as a young teen that I had to restart the game to fix it.

I'm chiming in to say that Seymour Flux also killed my first X play through. FFX was my first ever Final Fantasy and my second ever RPG so it's safe to say I had no idea WTF I was doing at the time

even just Besaid and meeting your proper crew/orienting yourself to the world of Spira is good. the beginning where you fight some meaningless battles in Zanarkand, wander underwater with some random dudes, baaj temple, all that scene stuff feels a little forced and doesn't give you much agency. you're just following along the story that isn't that good. it does get good once you hit Besaid though.

I remember dying in the Seymour Flux fight several times too. There is strategy involved with that one. I kinda lucked out beating Yunalesca my first try though, though I did get a game over there replaying on PS3.

You can't skip cutscenes even in the remaster of the game. I suspect it's a deep-seated tech issue where the cutscenes contain a bunch of logic and triggers that need to run in proper sequence, or else the game breaks.

I would highly recommend switching to the original soundtrack btw. The remastered tracks have some hits, but the originals are just perfect.

Also yeah most every boss has a section where you can grind. The worst place to get stuck though is right before the 2nd Seymour fight. So I would recommend grinding up in the desert area, or even in the forest area.

Right before Seymour 2 is one of the best grinding spots in the main game!

I also got stuck my first time playing at Seymour Flux. I was like 10 and borrowed the game from a friend, and I wasn't able to beat him before giving it back. Finally beat it like 10 years later and it has since been my favorite game
As long as you found that Evade & Counter weapon for Wakka in Via Purifico right before that, you can grind to your heart's content there

If you are trying to do the game as easily as possible I'd recommend:

  1. Focusing on a small number of characters later in the game (probably including Tidus and Auron because their grids are so good, Wakka because he has high accuracy, and Yuna because she brings Shell / Protect / Nul-elements - Shell / Protect are very good in this game). Lulu's magic can easily outdamage physical damage during the first two thirds of the main story (especially if you are using elemental spells to hit weaknesses), but later on physical/strength massively outscales.
  2. Trying to win the Blitzball match because you get a Strength Sphere from it (4 Strength might not sound like much, but because of how the stat scales in this game it's actually quite a bit early on). [You can also try dodging 50 lightning strikes in the 'alcove' to the east of the first part of the Thunder Plains you go through - this isn't mandatory at all, but it gets you 3 Strength Spheres as a reward, which is pretty broken at that stage of the game.]
  3. Buy the Sonic Steel from O'aka in Macalania Forest for Tidus (it has First Strike on it, which combined with Flee makes you pretty much immune to dying in random battles and therefore able to explore and grab every chest easily).
  4. Grind a bunch on the Highbridge (in Bevelle before the Seymour fight as mentioned above). I pretty much always do at least a little of this (n.b. the enemies are all weak to fire). The AP gains are extremely good and arguably not matched in any main story at all (because while other areas have comparable AP the enemies are more annoying).
  5. Get and use Quick Hit (at the very end of Tidus' grid). Combined with Haste (also on Tidus' grid) you can be getting off 4+ basic attacks as quickly as one normal Attack without Haste, massively increasingly your effective DPS.
  6. Use Summon Overdrives to blast through the hardest bosses - just bring the summon out in a random battle, get its OD gauge full then dismiss it and keep it in reserve for when you need a blast of damage. Since most bosses will need to use their turn to kill your Summon you can chain-Summon for loads of damage. [N.b. there's a second, stronger Overdrive for Valefor in Besaid Village you can pick up - try to get it before you leave).

This is also mostly down to Lulu getting more defensive as her grid progresses. Yuna with -aga, Flare, Doublecast? It's like nukes man.

Also, those aforementioned Strength Spheres? Give them to Tidus or Wakka, they can really use the power boost and with Quick Hit, you'll rinse enemies.

Also get Kimahri on Rikku's grid for Steal and Use, then to Tidus for Haste and the Strength Spheres you gave him to have a reliable, jack of all trades party member.
How paralyzingly dull, boring and tedious!

That's not for first playthroughs NFUN.

It is great though.

Personally I use every party member every battle as much as possible and don't typically have an issue. But I do grind because I find filling out the sphere grid to be fun, especially once people finish their section.

I think for first time you should use all the characters as much as you can. One tip though is you can swap in a character and press triangle to make them defend, which reduces damage and grants them XP for the battle AND only adds 1 unity of delay instead of 2, so you can easily get everyone XP for every battle.

Yeah you can flee most battles and still get enough levels if you do the character swapping.

Also another tip, use Slayer overdrive mode on Tidus and let him get the final hit on most enemies, so you can use his overdrive as often as possible. That will let you unlock his other overdrives really fast, which can make grinding way faster too (Energy Rain).

Good luck! I wish I had time to play Final Fantasy over Memorial Day weekend, but alas I'm scheduled every day leading up to it. And then on the day itself I'm going to the Renaissance Festival and then a late night showing of Friendship so no gaming for me~
