I think there's a pretty clear difference between an online system you have to opt into versus a basic upgrade system you have to actively avoid for enemies to be able to meaningfully hurt you
What about the summons in Elden Ring? The game clearly hands them to you as a tool to use and upgrade and they cheese the bosses like crazy.

It seems a little pointed when the first non-combat Zelda and the first one where you play as Zelda are the same game though.
I don't see it that way at all. It's good that the new protagonist can have their own distinctive mechanics in order to differentiate it from the games starring Link. If it's well received, it could be the start of a new series, and the idea could be expanded even more.

I think it's kinda cool that as the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, Zelda's strengths rely on her using magic to approach situations strategically and using the environment to her advantage, rather than through direct combat.
Surskit
Elden Ring with summon cheese would still be a lot harder than any 3D Zelda game played normally (until you maybe get Mimic Tear, but even then that's like 3/4 into the game). They're just not in the same ballpark.

Other Zelda games definitely de-emphasize combat, like Oracle of Ages
Sure but 1) that's like the worst Zelda game, especially compared to the more combat focused Oracle of Seasons which is a great game and 2) that game still has a lot of direct combat, the idea that the Oracle games are wildly different in that regard is honestly overstated
"You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! That's such a childish flavor, only children eat strawberry."

Thank you for saying this, this is such a weird thing that people keep repeating lol

Seasons and Ages have a slight lean towards "more action" and "more thinking" respectively, but it's a slight lean, the two games are not that fundamentally different (Ages just has hella more backtracking and places that are annoying to explore)

You have to do quite a lot of grinding for gear if you don't want Lynels or Gleeoks to be able to meaningfully hurt you. Or would you say every game where you can grind to be untouchable is easy?
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
I played the Oracle games for the first time last year and I spoiled myself by using a guide to get through much of Ages. Without it, I think some of those puzzles would have aggravated the hell outta me.
Burnin, Blazin
Bump of Wisdom. The map is apparently 8 times larger than LA's.
Is it? Maybe LA's map is just tiny, because it doesn't feel that huge. Having fast travel might help in that department I guess.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
LA uses single screens rather than continuous scrolling, so everything is likely pretty condensed by comparison.

That's what the devs say!

The game is fun so far.

The first time I got on top of a forest and just started casually strolling on top of the trees felt pretty cool. Like I was going "out of bounds".
Gin
Unflappable, unserious, unimportant
Spamming echoes is pretty dang fun.

Especially defeating monsters to summon them to fight other monsters. Feels like mini-Pokemon.

Having a lot more fun with Zelda than maybe I thought I would. I really like figuring out what enemies work well against other types of enemies

Been building ways to the higher cliffs on the map and dropping down onto treasures and items without actuallying doing the puzzle or cave you'd go through to normally get it

it lets you break the game in the same ways BotW and TotK do but in a 2D Zelda format

Up to 87/86 now, so basically in line with Links Awakening.

Played a bit and its really cool. Very impressed with the 3D verticality use in a 2D game like this. Also love the inclusion of simplified versions of BotW physics like burning the grass. Even the story is surprisingly interesting so far.
I just decided to change this sig.

How are the dungeons?
_foolmo_
he says listen to my story this maybe are last chance
Four dungeons in, I think they're quite good! Not quite as freeform as LttP's or the modern Zeldas, but in line with the portable 2D and pre-BotW 3D Zeldas. Lots of good puzzles, and they're sizable. Out of the first four, I'd say the best was the Desert dungeon and the weakest was the Water one (because it was the shortest). They do the BotW/TotK style dungeon lead-up quests too, which are fun.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
I beat the first Dungeon last night. Felt amazing to finally play an original 2D Zelda dungeon again. Peahat seems OP right now, but I imagine that changes. It does have the same UI clutter issue that TotK had for me, but I don't think the scope of this game will allow for it to get as out of hand as that game did.

Only l beat the first dungeon so far, but my favorite enemy echo are the Ropes. It's like send snake missiles at enemies. Reminds me of the Search Snake from Mega Man.

is this game open-world or more guided?
yet all azuarc of all sorts are more or less capricious and unreliable - they live in the varying outer weather, and they inhale its fickleness
More guided but with some more open sections. I believe it is a similar structure to ALBW but a little more restrictive.

Same sort of format as LttP. A big map you can explore with some limitations. You have a couple dungeons you can do in any order, but the later dungeons don't unlock until you finish those.

Stamp Guy obviously should have been Tingle.

When's the last time we've seen Tingle? I feel like it's been a while.

How is the performance holding up for everyone so far? Occasional stuttering or is it very bad?
I believe Hyrule Warriors is Tingles most recent appearance, if you dont count the geographical reference to him in BOTW.

it's really not a big deal. I mostly notice it when summoning something, but it quickly goes back to normal

Really? I was actually disappointed in the boss because it was so straightforward all I did was turn into Swordfighter over and over and. It felt too basic for this game, I was expecting to use echoes in unusual ways to get at its weak point or something, but it was just always there.

I used the keese for the final hits, only used sword fighter mode for the little ball you have to hit.

It wasn't up high on the boss's head at all? Or is swordfighter form able to jump THAT high ?

You can jump and pull the orb out with Tri after it slams its fists

Seems there are multiple solutions, which is cool

I know people were memeing from the first trailer, but beds really do solve most problems, huh?
Still the number one reason for the success of the Internet.
I noticed that the first tick of healing from a bed is a lot faster than the second, to the point that getting up and immediately lying down again after the first heal tick makes you heal faster than just lying there does.
http://i.imgur.com/k0v0z3q.gif
Yeah, the bed is actually uniquely useful because it's like the only 1x2x.5 solid object type for building structures.

I've been playing on Hero Mode and most of the time it doesn't make much of a difference, since you can just summon a bed to heal at any time. However combat encounters in tight quarters or enclosed spaces are always a threat, I'm at eight heart containers and I die in at most three hits (usually two). You actually kinda need to make and use those smoothies everyone else says are useless! The big fight that occurs in Hyrule Castle kicked my ass repeatedly but I finally beat it.

Protip for short flag race: you can use Tri to move obstacles out of the way during the race.

Yeah Hero mode definitely makes a difference with forced encounters. I am shocked by how much damage some things do.

You are a lifesaver.

Not only did I completely forget about the flag races, but I was stuck trying to break 17 seconds on the short course and couldn't do it. Even after using your tip, I just barely made it with a third of a second left...

Yup, I barely did it too. I have no idea why that one is so much harder than the other two races.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
I was stuck on that for a minute too, but once I decided to move on to the next race and the design of it made it plainly obvious that you were supposed to move stuff I went back and immediately got the short one.

Boy do I feel stupid.

Last night, I finished (post-fourth dungeon spoilers) Eldin Temple without ever figuring out how I was supposed to be using those little air updrafts . Then I did one of the sidequests that unlocked afterward and realized that I was supposed to grab the flying Echo like a Cucco to stay airborne . I kept using Reverse Bond on a flying Echo to try and cross over or otherwise tried to brute force the updrafts with base Zelda, all with limited to no success . I got so frustrated that I ended up cheesing pretty much every room with the Water Block Echo... but man, now the intended solution was so obvious in hindsight.

I was hovering at the top of the air draft and then summoning a flying tile and reverse bonding to it
http://i.imgur.com/k0v0z3q.gif
Oh that's a really smart idea. Reverse Bond feels underutilized, but when it does get used, it's for super clever stuff.

(Faron Wetlands) I couldn't figure out how to get past the bubbles during the escape sequence. Ended up looking online and saw a solution where you Reverse Bonded to a crate so that you'd float up with it.

I never understood the fascination with anime.
You know
I just realized I'm probably almost done with the game

And I still have no clue where the hell Damp is supposed to be. I found his hut, but apparently he's out wandering, and I've explored all but one region so far. Like, I completely forgot about the whole Automaton system until I saw someone talking about it on another forum.

The IGN review was dead-on about that whole sidequest being very easy to miss...

Oh... I cleared it in like 16.9 seconds without that. It was very frustrating.
It's tempting to linger in this moment, while every possibility still exists. But unless collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities.

game arrived today and just finished up for the night and ohhhh my god I ADORE this game, it's such an absolute love-letter to the franchise I've been really excited as heck playing it

I haven't been paying much attention to news or impressions since I mean I knew I was buying it and all but I didn't even know we'd be back to a reimagined LttP map but also it's such a blast traversing around exploring it all. Soon as I finished the first dungeon I really just went filling the entire map I could (everything sans the 3 northernest spots of Hebra) and it reminded me so much of how I started BotW that way

Just a singular dungeon down and I've been really impressed with the puzzles and just how many mechanics that are dropped on you so fast, like even with sub-features of things like the Bind ability going like hey you can also lock your movement to the thing you're binding and mannn I love it

Also I get such a feeling that I'm doing things in ways they aren't exactly intended which I absolutely adore - like when I was exploring up in the north-east Zora area I went to a cave that gives you the fish bomb and it ended up with this chest on a wooden pile and I assume you were supposed to use the bombs to blast apart the wood and drop the chest but instead I really wrangled a way to get hold up the Igniszol just under and burn it and it did feel intended that way??

and again really surprised how much I could explore, also feeling like I'm not intended to be doing this stuff like abusing towers of Trampoline into Boulder& into Tree&Trampoline and then finally reaching some really high-up spots in Eldin working out continuing to a Tree + two trampolines and I loved having that literally just as soon as your opened up past the first dungeon

Really capturing so much classical Zelda charm and puuuure fanservice while also making the game feel so experimental like BotW
