Year and eight days ago anyway.

I never finished TotK -- quit when I got to my first dungeon. Ultrahand's a cool mechanic, but it lost me trying to fit it into a Zelda game as the main ability. I liked running around, finding things, ascension, and floating through the sky...just didn't feel compelled storyline-wise beyond the opening scene.

Six months ago it seemed like people were very much TotK > BotW (like 75% if I remember it right), so here's a different poll. Breath of the Wild is the only 3D Zelda-game of from the past two decades that held my attention the whole game personally. The rest have cool moments, but they just didn't hold me (though shout-outs to Link Between Worlds in the 2D side of the series). Too bad Wind Waker misses this timeframe...ah well.

Think I gotta give it to TotK because the powers are just too cool - mainly ultrahand and building vehicles/unmanned drones/Metal Gears.
May you find your book in this place.

I still haven't finished Tears of the Kingdom but it's probably the best Zelda game ever

Either that or Breath of the Wild

Tears is the second best 3D Zelda, losing out only to Majora IMO. Such a brilliant follow up addressing all of BotWs core issues while also coming out swinging with some legitimately insane mechanics. However, it was also completely draining to play just due to its sheer size and amount of stuff so I legit never want to see another Zelda in this exact template again. (I will absolutely not have my way on this.)

I haven't finished TotK either. It got boring and repetitive.

It reeked of the open world problem of "there is a lot of everything and nothing is rewarding."

Also open world games suck and I hate that they are apparently what people want.

I think TotK may be better in a vacuum, but BotW felt more special. I played a ton of both, but I petered out on TotK before fully completing it.

I generally agree with you

BotW and TotK have been the exceptions for me

Rebirth too since I guess people consider that "open world" but it doesn't feel like one to me

I agree that TotK is a bit too large and a bit too unfocused. Great game, might even beat out OoT as my favourite 3D Zelda, and I think its mechanics allow for creative puzzle solving like no other game. I just think narrowing the scope a tinyyy bit would make it more focused and ironically give it more longeivity. I did pretty much everything notable in BotW and wasn't even really tired of it by the end, but I felt like I left a lot of TotK unexplored because I simply didn't have the patience for the game to scour it top to bottom. Even making it half the size but less empty would probably make it a better game overall, for me.
Perhaps the golden rock was inside us all along.

good post
I need to update my signature.
Twilight Princess for me, but I havent played Skyward Sword. TP kinda just wins by default for now since I didnt like BotW and wont ever play TotK because of that. Shame the series wants to follow that style going forward, but ah well
TotK was the Zelda game to finally surpass Majora's Mask as my favorite

Those first 2 really don't compare well to TotK. Link Between Worlds is probably better than either.

TotK is not just a fantastic Zelda game, what it does with the interlocking systems is absolutely insane. Loved it.
I just decided to change this sig.

Yeah, this is pretty much how I feel.

TotK technically had more "content", but not sure it was a net gain in terms of enjoyment. I also was not a huge fan of building in general, so the core mechanics were not as fun as the more basic abilities BotW had.

Breath of the Wild I think is the best Zelda game ever but I definitely see why someone would pick TotK.

Well done to azuarc for finishing 67 places above me in the 2020 GOTD Guru Contest!
Breath of the Wild was a top 20 game of all-time for me going into 2023.

Tears of the Kingdom was so god damn good, in virtually the same world, that I legitimately don't know if I could ever go back to BotW now.
Play Outer Wilds
Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda and in my top 5 games of all time, so pretty easily that. I didn't get very far in TotK before getting distracted by other stuff but I should get back to it. It's kind of daunting though because I have a lot of stuff I want to play. I didn't really get bored of it or anything, just never really got in

BotW was good but didn't really hook me tbh
MZero , to the extreme

botw and totk are soulless open world games that people who haven't really played better versions love

I enjoyed tears more but I haven't found the motivation to finish either.

And I really tried to get into them. They're just... blah
