Starting up on this as a mix of part fun project and part possible future backup-plan in case this place ever gets shut down.
For the initial design I'm going to be sticking mostly to the classic look and features and evolve it from there, if anyone has screenshots of the forums from the ~2003-06(?) era those would be helpful to have! Especially if you have any of things like profiles or the posting screen, can't remember quite what those looked like.

Aiming for it to be a little bit more feature rich with things like a classic/mobile layout for phones, API access for making comment bots, and whatever other ideas people may have (ex I know Mafia is popular, are there any built in forum features that would help out with those games?)

Still pretty much just getting started with it but once it's a bit more than a mostly empty project I'll set up a git for it and set up a test site on boardEight.com.

As a former Mafia player, it would be really, REALLY sweet to have a bot that counts votals, so if we posted ##votals, we'd get the bot to post votals. But yes, this is a REALLY COOL idea, and I appreciate that somebody is on making up a backup place so we can all stay together if Fandom eventually flushes this site down the toilet for good.

Project 8 was basically Tomy Hawk's response to the Skate series making more realistic skating games, only it didn't capture the more realistic feel of Skate as well and lost its own identity along the way

Thanks! Yeah, hoping it stays a fun little backup plan we don't actually need to migrate to. Don't think I'll be trying to turn it into an active site worth migrating to unless Fandom really starts to tear this place down.

Ah yeah, can definitely see that unpolished Skate influence. I only ever played the demo but I got a night's worth of fun out of the broken physics + broken bone counting system.

Looks good and I'd probably migrate if the board goes down, but in my experience forum off-shoots don't prevent the death of an online community, only prolong it.

Awesome! The gang will appreciate that.

The way it works is that you have to vote a user, so the full text for me was - always bolded - " ##vote: BCT " so it would have to count every vote for me on a separate line from any other player; however, if someone voted "BlueCrystalTear" then that would have ended up on a separate line. If unvoted, the person's current vote would be removed from the counter, and their vote would have parenthesis around it to denote that they HAD voted me, but unvoted later. This is so people can keep track of actions and whatnot, as it's an information game. Let me know if all this makes sense to you!

I will let Chris say more of course, since who's the one who's REALLY been wanting that feature here the most? Chris.

The vintage screenshot is great, but my eyes require dark mode now, so I suggest a Dark Mode option.
Azuarc is my favorite arc of the Game of the Decade 2020 anime.

another thing that might help for mafia is the ability to make a private topic that only a small list of people can view? but any kinda vote counting anything would be a boon for a lot of stuff I think

Thank you for doing this! I'm not quite as pessimistic on the future of this place as some are, but that doesn't mean I won't be extremely relieved to have a contingency plan anyway. I'd definitely hate to lose this community.

@ mentions are good to have in general, and then a mafia topic could parse those with ##Vote:@user

What I've found in my previous mafia bot attempts though is that mafia is much more complicated than 1 vote per user. You can limit it to that, but much of the fun is when the rules are broken, and b8 does that often.

Sounds like a total bot for mafia could get tricky, will have to build quite a few different settings into it and see how close we can get.
Thanks for the ideas so far.

Introducing THE LIST.

The List:
-Vote counting with options to set how often people can vote, if any limits at all
-Dark mode / themes (GameFAX basically a req)
-@Pinging - Totally forgot about this
-Polls!

Finishing setting up some API basics tonight, might have the basics testable this weekend.

@xenosaga get me in that codebase! I can start on a mafia bot.

Also you should add DMs to the feature list. Mafia bot needs that too. Or some sort of post visibility system where users can only see a subset of posts in a topic. I have some crazy ideas for Mafia with that.

Nabbed b8.wtf! Hopefully you weren't wanting to grab it or I'm going to feel like a real jerk lol. Wanted to get it quickly just in case, seems like a pretty good and short url for the project.

Adding ' getting codebase ready for people to work on ' to the list, probably about halfway there on that. Want to do some cleanup and reorganizing before putting it out there, my first pass at a project is usually a borderline stream-of-conscious mess that I go and give a cleanup pass to eventually

Yup I meant for you to get it :P Also I get what you mean with the first draft of code, but it doesn't bother me at all. I'm very good at compartmentalizing my code (esp something highly modular like a mafia simulation). But whatever works best for you.
