yeah I think Catan is 100% a great answer just because I dont think its a big hobby today without it
catan is just different than the other ones. like Go is 1 on 1, Chess is 1 on 1, Monopoly is 1 on ragequit, Catan is the first board game for a lot of people where they go "oh, so this is a strategy game." doesn't take long, makes you want to learn its mechanics, easy to understand, and is
the
gateway that none of the others can say. you don't go from Chess or Go to others thinking "man what does this have?" you don't go from Monopoly to anything without asking "this isn't taking 4 hours right." Catan is the one that makes you grow into the full genre, as opposed to being there for just that game. that's why i put it over others like Scrabble or Clue or Checkers or whatever - they all
lack
that element.
