I prefer SH3 over 2, and the plot is more personal to me, but I do feel like 2 represents better how games can be used as storytelling.

There's like five games I could have picked for the final slot to represent smaller games tbh ... but Journey feels "right".
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
The Last of Us
Tetris
Undertale

went for a mix of fantastic visuals, storytelling, and immersion for the first two. different weight on 'em and i don't think anyone else will mention El Shaddai even though this is the one category it has legs on.

Tetris was picked for its simplicity and its ability to grab a player and keep them attached to it. in terms of something that's mastered the art of a video game, little tops it. i do wonder if Baldur's Gate 3 will end up on the short list here when it's complete as well but too soon for that.

Undertale for its uniqueness and also trying to take video games to a different level as not just a game but an experience too, without losing track that it's a video game. that's the pitfall i find lost in a lot of the more pretentious ones.

You are being forced to get a tattoo, from a reputable artist, who will make an entire intricate backpiece design centered around one of these Greek figures. Which do you choose?

Also this sounds sick as hell. If you're a reputable artist who wants to force me to get an intricate backpiece you've designed based on Greek myth, hmu

Swap Journey for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Its use of mechanics should be celebrated, interactivity is such a vital part of the artform.

... not sure whether to have the last one be Facade or The Witness tbh. i guess the former?

tons of compelling options here really so I went for ones that I feel have the most lasting impact (sadly meaning sotc is off my list, as it really hasn't been relevant in years)

and yeah moon is a weird one to count on that basis, but given all the games it had a direct impact on that also pushed the artistic expression of the medium, and seeing as it is still a fantastic example in its own right, it just felt correct to me

Agreed, and I'm shocked at how few votes it has in light of its remaster coming out shortly and how it was at one time THE sign that indie games were both catching on and could be different from what people normally think of with games.

I'll add in another surprised post that Braid isn't in here frequently enough

It directly lead to a much maligned Roger Ebert article addressing the game and whether video games can be art
Started from the bottom now we here
I feel like a lot of people are looking to the topic for ideas cause it's a weird category

No idea why Silent Hill 2 would get so many votes to begin with. I'm not saying it's a bad pick but it's going HARD here and I feel like a lot of that was it being one of the first games mentioned.

Also MGS2 had zero votes but got up to 3 shortly after I voted it.

What I'm saying is if Braid was voted early who knows!
No problem!

honestly it surprises me the witness went overlooked in here more than braid
I mean FFVIII was one of the first votes too and it hasn't mattered

But watch the opening FMV again and tell me that's not more art than Kojima's silly diatribe about memes

actually on second thought the real surprise to me is the lack of molyneux games in here

No idea why Silent Hill 2 would get so many votes to begin with.

Silent Hill 2 was critically acclaimed. In North America, Japan, and Europe, over one million copies were sold, with the greatest number of sales in North America. Critics praised its psychological horror story, use of symbolism and taboo topics, atmosphere, graphics, monster designs, soundtrack, sound design and emotional depth. It is considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time and the best horror game ever made.[1][2][3][4] It is also regarded as a key example of video games as an art form.

Silent Hill 2 has been carrying the flag for this topic since the arguments began.

My only guess with Braid is that it was very famous in its time but that time passed like a decade ago.

But the discussion of it embedded itself deeply enough into my brain that it was probably my first thought after SotC. Journey I saw in a museum on a school trip once as well as being so obviously "artistic"
Not to be confused with XIII_Minerals.
Also I interpreted this as games that caused people to bang the "IT'S ART!" drum the most, and based my thoughts on that - as opposed to games I personally think are most "artistic". Idk about that, really. I'd probably throw in MGS2 if I was voting on it that way.

Huh I guess I missed the Silent Hill 2 = ART talks in the past this is all new to me and I don't really get it.

Like it's a fairly unique and interesting story. Good atmosphere.

But yeah it's not one that I'd consider particularly "artistic" (over any other game with a good story) being honest with you so a bit confusing to me.

Again not a sleight at all I like the game more than 3/4 of the games I listed.

I'm torn on whether I want to dig into why people bang the drum for it or not since I'm not super into a lot of those discussions but yeah that's kinda crazy that it's just totally been in my blind spot both in terms of the discussions existing and comprehending why the discussions might occur.

This isn't an exaggeration. If you adjust for sample size (a.k.a. sales numbers), SH2 has one of the highest overanalyzer-per-player count of any game.

Because it's not even the most "art" game by Kojima anymore.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely like almost the entire MGS series more, but that's not what the category is.

It's not even in first place for an opening FF FMV at the time it came out.

Well there's that. There's also the track record of Team Bloober, everything they have said about it, and what we've gotten out of "new Silent Hill" lately.

So like it's just cause the plot "makes u think" and a lot of people like discussing it?

I guess that's fair. I guess for me why I didn't really consider it for this category is I don't think it uses the medium all that much. Like Silent Hill 2 as a book is basically the same thing.

But if there's some culture of gamer people on the Internet who analyze it to death yeah sure I get it-- just as someone who has been unaware of that culture I was confused.
No problem!

if overanalysis is the benchmark then i wonder why we didn't get any umineko votes
