I think broadly speaking the vast majority of audiences aren't very good at choosing quality entertainment, and you can easily make a hit movie with bad writing and acting and design as long as it hits the right buttons and has a well known cast and advertises like hell. You can sell dreck to a mass audience and they'll eat it up. We've have plenty of examples of it.

I think the takeaway however that it's possible, and frankly easy, to make a movie that's too stupid for even the stupid people. You don't have to put out a quality product to be rewarded for it, but that doesn't mean people will watch anything.
