Honestly I kind of think
Luis's character was a bit too straightforward, like it's very tell-don't-show to have him constantly say "I'm trying to atone for my past actions so I can feel better about myself!", humans aren't normally so self-aware and just speak their motivations out loud like that. And he did it like 3 times! I do like him though and it's still a major improvement over the original.
