So I was playing Hogwarts Legacy and I got to a point where you
enter a book and basically live out memories in this neat storybook graphic style with the specter of Death looming above you
. I was immediately reminded of the famous Scarecrow sequences in Arkham Asylum and honestly this sort of thing is one of my favorite things games do; infrequent but awesome.
I was hoping to compile a list of games that have these sorts of sequences, and I came up with a few rules that unites them all in my head (I wouldn't say they all have to apply but MOST of them):
-
Changes up the main gameplay loop
-
Leans towards psychological horror
-
Seemingly messes with graphics, software, or potentially even hardware
-
Is controlled by an overlooming entity
A few examples:
-
Batman: Arkham Asylum (obviously)
-
God of War: Ragnarok (
Fates sequence
)
-
Metal Gear Solid 3 (
The Sorrow
)
-
Spec Ops: The Line (
The Burning Tower
)
-
Guardians of the Galaxy (
Star-Lord's
Promise)
)
-
Resident Evil Village (
House Beneviento
)
There's probably more that aren't coming to me right now, which is where you (hopefully) come in. And I dunno, maybe I'll do a ranking of them all or something.
