So I was playing Hogwarts Legacy and I got to a point where you enter a book and basically live out memories in this neat storybook graphic style with the specter of Death looming above you . I was immediately reminded of the famous Scarecrow sequences in Arkham Asylum and honestly this sort of thing is one of my favorite things games do; infrequent but awesome.

I was hoping to compile a list of games that have these sorts of sequences, and I came up with a few rules that unites them all in my head (I wouldn't say they all have to apply but MOST of them):
  • Changes up the main gameplay loop
  • Leans towards psychological horror
  • Seemingly messes with graphics, software, or potentially even hardware
  • Is controlled by an overlooming entity
A few examples:
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum (obviously)
  • God of War: Ragnarok ( Fates sequence )
  • Metal Gear Solid 3 ( The Sorrow )
  • Spec Ops: The Line ( The Burning Tower )
  • Guardians of the Galaxy ( Star-Lord's Promise) )
  • Resident Evil Village ( House Beneviento )
There's probably more that aren't coming to me right now, which is where you (hopefully) come in. And I dunno, maybe I'll do a ranking of them all or something.

Eternal Darkness does this a lot
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
I hesitate to count it because it's one of the main features of the game.

What about the CYOA section of Nier?
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
I want to say Evil Within 2 with the sequences where you had to avoid the Aperture but it is still in keeping with the overall theme of the game
Well done to azuarc for finishing 67 places above me in the 2020 GOTD Guru Contest!

Yeah it's close but not quite. The Anima sequences could qualify however...

The Far Cry games(or at least Far Cry 3? Maybe 5? I dont remember anymore ) have drug sequences that are kind of like a Scarecrow thing.
For your Azuarc .
At least Kupo has class and doesn't MESSAGE the people -Dr Pizza
Good call, Far Cry 3 definitely has one (I haven't played FC5 so I can't speak on that one)

What can the harvest hope for if not for the care of the Reaper Man?
Omori, even though it's kind of the point of the game.
The only certain death in the universe is Mother Hitton's Littul Kittons.
Not changing this line until I beat Seven Heroes (2/24/07) - Fulfilled 2/20/18

lol true though!

All good suggestions to add! Omori is a great game but yeah it is kind of the point so I don't think I'd count it. Tranquility Lane is countable I think.

I was initially reluctant to count it but I think Psycho Mantis in MGS1 actually kind of fits this.

Not like I've done it so I don't know how much it changes things up, but there's always "A Hat in Time" with the Vanessa segment.
I'll just go back to gifs. Not like the winner was gonna click my topic.

A couple of examples that I don't think were already mentioned:
Max Payne
Far Cry Primal
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
The Hex (honestly this is probably applicable to every Daniel Mullins game)
Why Am I Dead At Sea (It has been five or more years, but I want to say this is eligible)
Life is Strange (at least I think that I am right)

We Happy Few (a reverse scarecrow sequence kind of, but it isn't scripted and is player-based)
The Darkness (it is embedded in the core gameplay, so I don't think this is what you are looking for even though it checks off multiple boxes)
KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy
Oh Life is Strange is a good one!

If we're including VNs, there's a good chunk of options, Tsukihime being a big one.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
