Board 8 » how often do you voluntarily consume media you expect to dislike?
for example, i will almost never choose a movie i think has a super high chance of being bad, unless i'm watching it at least semi-ironically or it has significant cultural cachet

i will happily voluntarily listen to a song i expect to dislike once if i'm told to try it, though i won't stay on a song i instructions dislike on the radio/playlist if i'm alone and i have no outside reason to stay on it

i will read books i expect to be bored by or dislike if i think they'll help me gain perspective (and they're length is reasonable)

i no longer play any video games i expect to dislike completely
yet all azuarc of all sorts are more or less capricious and unreliable - they live in the varying outer weather, and they inhale its fickleness
aside from music, i can't imagine doing this at all except for the very specific scenario of doing this 'as a bit' with friends with a movie so bad it's fun to relentlessly make fun of it (The Room, God's Not Dead, etc.)

i'll try music I don't like if it's recommended to me although my friends have my tastes pretty down by this point so that rarely happens
The Artist Formerly Known as Hannyabal
I've probably only done it when other people encourage me to hatewatch and laugh with them

example that comes to mind being honey boo boo

GuessMyUserName 's account's very own account!
Pretty often for Board 8 music contests where I am expected to listen to all of the songs involved before voting. Although, sometimes I'll just abstain if I really don't want to put up with something.

For movies, mostly just when watching stuff with friends. Although, I like most non-horror stuff so this doesn't really come up much.

For video games, pretty much never. I don't have enough time to make it through the stuff I do want to play as is.
My bracket looked like random picks compared to his.
Congrats to azuarc for winning the GotD 2020 Guru Contest!
If you mean expectations from before I started the thing at all (as opposed to starting something, realizing I hate it, but forcing myself to finish it anyway) then I actually don't do this very often. With anime, for example, I've watched plenty of shows I expected to be mediocre, but it takes more than that for me to dislike them. All the ones I disliked are ones I had high hopes for!
**R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile)
I've done this sometimes for anime where the premise sounds bad but there's a lot of hype behind the series. Either the series will actually be good or I gain the ability to proclaim the series as worthless while having a leg to stand on, so it's really a win-win scenario.
I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways.
does it count as voluntary if the whole friend group wants to watch a movie and you don't want to be the dick who says "absolutely not"?

no, that specifically doesn't count. having to settle for a movie on date night that your partner wants to watch is similar. i'm talking about like 100% your choice. you might not have access to what you want to watch specifically but you can definitely choose just not to watch/listen/play and not do anything

once in a while, usually watching things for amusement
New name, new gender, same great Bolo flavor!
Now with no spaces!
Eh, sometimes. If I want to watch a movie but I'm too tired to really pay attention to something I've been wanting to watch, then I'll throw on something I have little expectation of enjoying. Games less so, they're a longer commitment, but it does happen when I want to complete a series and get to an entry regarded as bad.

I should do this more though to broaden my tastes and get out of my media comfort zone! This is an interesting question.
Very very slowly becoming a Final Fantasy aficionado.
If it's a series I'm curious about, I'll try out a piece of "bad" media to help give greater context for the rest of the series.

Recent example: I got the Castlevania Anniversary Collection, and I sought out a guide so I could play through Simon's Quest despite the game being infamously awful.

azuarc beat me.
pretty rarely, though recently I did listen to The Most Wanted Song and The Most Unwanted Song with my girlfriend so we could experience the... art?? of it??
I'm Rose Coldsteel, from Legend of Coldsteel
I try to avoid that as best as possible, but this is coming from the guy who just forced himself to beat Tales of Zestiria despite suffering through it all.

Sometimes I watch things that are considered "bad" to see if they're "horrendous" or "So Bad It's Good" (SBIG). When it's SBIG, I'm glad I did. When it's "horrendous" you get me saying all those negative things about Zestiria.

Okay, I rolled a 14. What's that mean? Hsu
That you're a cheater. This is a 12-sided die. Chan
Well, I did play AI: The Somnium Files 2 this week, but I did actually end up liking it a little
I'll do it for most things. I've found a few hidden gems buried in stuff I didn't expect to be any good.

However video games are the exception because of this (and because I feel like it's easier to grasp if a vg will be bad at a glance for me)
No problem!
This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
Outside of music-related b8 contests... never. In fact, I'd sooner say I'm ridiculously picky about what shows/movies I watch and what games I play.
Pretty much every time a new Marvel movie comes out

in this case basically never

I'll play bad games all the time I can usually find one or two things to like

Movies and TV shows more selective unless my friends want to see them too then I'll check them out

I don't listen to music so not an issue

To write it down for all the world to see
hardly if ever. Too much stuff I expect to enjoy to get through

Very, very rarely. Life's already far too short to consume even close to all the actual good stuff out there to waste any time on the bad.
