I used to have an old emeco industries metal chair like the image above that was basically a tank of a chair, but it finally gave out on me some years back. Thought for sure it would outlive me XD. I tried to replace it with something but that something barely lasted a couple years before breaking. Currently I'm using what is essentially a waiting room kind of chair I paid $2.50 from a downtown furniture store. Slapped a lumbar mesh on it, and it works well enough for now.
I imagine if I could spare the funds right now, that I'd go for some flavor of Herman Miller chair, definitely something with a strong metal foundation rather than a cheap plastic one begging to break.

That was my chair, but as I was sitting on it a couple hours ago it literally broke and split in multiple places and almost flipped me over.
Normally, I'd go to Staples and sit on all the chairs and buy the one I like the most. Unfortunately, we're in the middle of a fucking pandemic(With a side of potential civil war) so that really isn't an option.
Even if Staples were open and it was normal, we're under a curfew right now so I couldn't go if I really wanted to.
So I'm kind of lost on what chair to buy. First time I've said my chair model number after purchasing and now I can't just rebuy it because it no longer exists.

Unless you are broke invest in a good one. You spend most of your day in it!

I considered buying a Burlston when I went shopping earlier this year. I ultimately went with a different model. I can't recall the name. It doesn't have the lumbar support I'd like it to, though, so I sit with a pillow.

Definitely agree with this. I burned through several mediocre office chairs using the "try it in the store" method until I finally decided to throw the cash down for a refurbished Herman Miller and holy shit it's so amazing. By reputation I'm not going to need another chair for the next ~15 years too with this so honestly the money difference is probably less than you'd think.

I'm doing the thing where I spend all day searching for chairs, decide nothing is perfect and spend even more time looking for a chair.
All while my back aches from sitting on this travesty of a chair that was very much not designed for long term use.
I miss actual physical stores.

I was able to get an excellent condition Herman Miller Aeron chair off of Facebook marketplace for $300. Id definitely recommend it. Not sure if thats as great of an option during a pandemic, but depending on your budget it may be a good option to get a much nicer chair than youd be able to get brand new.

Best chair I've ever owned. You can probably find it for cheaper than $300 if you do some searching. It's available at Costco and Staples that I've seen in stores.
But as for your back pain from working/gaming at a desk, there are certainly other things you can do. I'm an occupational therapist; I've done a lot of research and education in ergonomics if you'd like further help with your desk set-up, lmk.

Honestly I got a gaming chair (Vertagear not Secretlab) and it's uncomfortable as shit. I consider it a giant waste of $400. I literally can't sit in it for more than an hour without being in physical pain.
Just get something cheap so that you didn't invest too much if it turns out to be crap.

Gaming chairs look uncomfortable but I've yet to sit in one as they weren't really common when I was last chair shopping.

So I caved and bought a sort of random chair that was on sale at staples.
I opened the box and it seemed a bit strange that some of the packages for the bolts were already open. The pneumatic gas lift was already attached to the part that goes on the chair as well, which is not how the instructions say to put it together.
Then one of the holes on the chair base appears to already be stripped.
I look at the box. There is a covered up shipping label.
I think maybe it was sent to a store or something first, but I notice the address so what the hell, I google it.
The address is to a house. So I got a clearly open box item passed off as new.
