And it was fantastic. Almost like Life is Strange the anime. I'm not sure how to describe it otherwise, besides super good.

Despite that though, the most hype thing was a preview for a new Digimon move with Tai and Matt in their like mid-30s.

But yeah. This is what my life has become now.

is this a "recommend more good anime movies" topic now

Makoto Shinkai is awesome

I mean... We can go this route, sure.

I've watched a total of two anime series in my life (Digimon and .hack//sign) and one movie (this) so the field is wide open.

How did you end up going to watch the movie if you don't normally go to anime movies?

You should try watching "Your Name.". It's also by Makoto Shinkai.
Link isn't the only one who kicks ass.
Congrats to Advokaiser for winning the CBX Guru Contest!
Friend had been hyping it for a while and bought two tickets so I couldn't really say no.

Your life will be bettered by the works of Masaaki Yuasa.
A Silent Voice is the best non-franchise anime movie of the last decade. Heck, maybe even including franchise.

Your Name is also good.
A Silent Voice is really good as well.

As for regular shows...that's a much more difficult thing to nail down. Would kind of need to know what type of stuff you're looking for. Steins;Gate is my blanket #1 for the last decade, though specifically looking at stuff that's more hitting these types of tones, A Place Further Than the Universe is a very safe bet.
Wolf Children is the best anime movie

This same friend trying to get me into anime and has said I should watch one about demons running an orphanage so they can eat them. Or something along those lines.

That's a great show, but uhhhh...maybe tell your friend that spoiling the major twist premise of a series isn't the way to get you into it.
i need to watch this movie i love shinkai
...Snrk.
And theeen, we do stuff like, 'Persona!' with our Personas and beat the crap outta Shadows...
"whoops"

I usually have a high bar for entry into new things and it is known horror is generally a way to push things over the top.

For a horror tinge, I would probably push Made in Abyss more than The Promised Neverland. Can't really go wrong either way.
Your Name/A Silent Voice are must watches

I mean, it's an Episode 1 spoiler.
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
Yeah but it's a damn good thing to be surprised by.
It was the first weeb movie I saw in theaters. I wasn't blown away by it but I thought it was pretty good

Worst part was the audience. They laughed way too hard at every joke and whenever a Your Name character had a cameo they gasped, gasped again two seconds later and then one guy would yell "WHAT!?" even though the roles were inconsequential

In any case, good movie

Nearly got to see the US premiere of this two months ago at the AnimeNYC convention. Stood on line for an hour and the room maxed out when I was 20 people from the door. Looking forward to watching it when it winds up available for rent/streaming.

Your Name and Promised Neverland are both great.

Still need to watch A Silent Voice. Its on Netflix though.
It was also so weird to hear a group of people audibly react to a trailer for River City Girls

I would play River City Girls tbqh

I guess I had a normal audience, I didn't have any of those issues with my crowd

Just saw it myself. Really good movie!

Also agreed that if you liked this you should watch Your Name
Congrats to Advokaiser for winning the CBX Guru Challenge!
I saw it last night. I was really moved (almost to tears) by some of the themes, which I felt had more depth than Your Name (although the narrative was a bit weaker). I dont want to spoil anything, but I would highly recommend anyone even somewhat interested to see it whenever they can.
Audiences at anime movies can be a bit of a diceroll. Most of the time they are good in my experience but there are exceptions. Surprising that happened at an original movie though, the rowdier audiences tend to happen at movies that are part of existing franchises in my experience.

Don't really have much to add in terms of recommendations, but I guess I'll say The Garden of Words because it's also a Shinkai movie and is probably my favorite by him.
Oh woops. Putting Advokaiser in my sig like this until I think of something more clever
I wasn't wild about it, I thought it was maybe just too... straightforward? I adore Your Name and I didn't come in with high expectations. Nothing about Weathering really did a whole lot for me. I'm definitely in the minority here though, the friends I went with both really liked it.

River City Girls and the digimon movie looked phenomenal.
