Here's what I know about the game:

first game is a hallway simulator
Snow is edgelord
There's a guy with a baby chocobo in his afro (Sazh?)
Ending of Lighting Returns she ends up in Kansas or something?

Please no spoilers or correcting me if I'm wrong about anything here but what am I in for?

Mediocre game
Great game
Good game if you like the gimmick, awful game if you don't

I got 45 minutes into Lightning Returns and never played it again. The second game is fantastic, though!

Yeah I don't really have the patience to 100% JRPGs anymore. It made sense when I was younger and I'd only get a new game every few months but with my backlog I'm really just looking to beat it and move on.

Seems like most people agree that XIII-2 is legitimately good so that's encouraging. I played through Tales of Zestiria at the end of last year so XIII can't be any worse than that right?

First one sucks but it's all I played. I know I did like Lightning and Snow in World of Final Fantasy. So maybe they got better.

Hope is really awful tho.

Play XIII so you know what's doing in XIII-2.

I also only played about an hour of LR before putting it down for good.

The soundtracks though are phenomenal

XIII has its moments and during the one part when it's not a "hallway simulator" it is actually excellent. Strong music throughout. In all, I'd say it's actually a bit underrated, but it definitely has issues.

I never played the sequels.

XIII-2 is good enough that I think XIII was worth it.

It was incredibly disappointing at the time, though.

I never really understood the linear complaint about FFXIII, yeah going in basically a line is kind of lame, but exploration has never been a big selling point of the series to begin with. There are a lot of cases in earlier games where the pure lack of direction is a pretty big detriment.

In any case as a whole, the story of the trilogy is dumb. Like really dumb. The last game especially feels like a big fanfiction but it just has so many "fuck yeah" moments just packed into it that it doesn't really matter that much.

The second game is good, but I feel like it was a big overcorrection of the complaints of the first game. Like I don't really think XIII has a lot of charm to it and the plot, while being pretty cheesy at times, is very serious almost all the time with no comic relief moments. So the second game tossed in a lot of humor, basically made things as non-linear as possible, etc.

Yeah, that's my biggest problem with XIII-2 as well (That and Noel being lame).

i think xiii-2 and lightning returns are both worthwhile games, messy and flawed but fun as hell. i'm just not sure if they're worth playing through xiii to get through

This technically exists through Xbone X enhanced backwards compatibility now. (Sadly I can't even point to the PC versions in this case because hoo boy did Squeenix drop that ball, though I think it's still possible with mods)

Man, I said XIII was mediocre but I wouldn't say it was so bad that you'd basically be unhappy playing it just to get to XIII-2 like most of the others are. I haven't played it since it was released, to be fair, but I remember thinking it was average for the most part while playing it, with some enjoyable moments, and then looking back I thought less of it as time went on. There were few moments that I can recall where I felt bad playing the game.
I was the final Undisputed Champion in UCA history,
however Advokaiser was the Guru Champion!
