I can agree that the ordering could have been better but to claim to not get the game because you thought Issac would be playable is just dumb.

What if they didn't add Isaac or anyone I liked?

Then Im honestly jealous you can play the smash with free online and custom moves without feeling like you're missing out

Hot take: While I agree the ordering could have probably been better, I'd bet money that had K Rool been the last one to be revealed, he would have been accepted much more harshly than he was because then suddenly he'd be the character people perceived as "Taking Isaac/Geno/Dixie/whoever's spot" instead of Incineroar or Piranha Plant.

To an extent he would have been judged more harshly, but it wouldn't have been nearly as bad. Considering he was the #1 most wanted, I think even people that didn't care about him would have shrugged and went "okay, fair". Heck Shulk was a nobody before Smash 4, was one of the last reveals, and he was still positively received.
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
Oh and smash run, which has way more replayability than sse

I think if instead of Ken and Piranha they showed Ridley and Simon this wouldve ended better for them even if there were still people disappointed their favorite didnt make the cut

But yeah. The AT thing is also huge. Like, do they have that much of a disconnect with the fans that they don't know characters like Isaac / Skull Kid / Shadow are really popular and that they should definitely show them as ATs first if they are planning that route for them?

Do we have proof this is true? This feels like a case of 'of course Magus would be much more popular than Crono, trust me on this one!' more than anything else.

Keeping Ridley right at the start is big. Don't want to mess with that.

Having K.Rool at the end here I think would have solved most problems.
Also it's going back a bit, but the reaction to Isabelle was pretty tepid as well. She has her fans but judging by the front page today, not that many! Was an expected choice but people didn't care that much.

The last time the majority of the fanbase has been truly hyped was back during the K.Rool Direct, which was a while back.
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
I think putting K. Rool last would have heavily increased the "What, why?! He's not even relevant in his own series anymore!" outcry since you'd have more people that felt scorned for not getting their favorite joining in.

it maybe would have been a little bit better, but "solved most problems" is doubtful.

The order of reveals really should've went like this;

Spring 2018: No one (the teaser minus the inklings would have been enough)

E3: Everyone Returns, Ridley

1st Smash Direct: Inkling, Daisy, Chrom, Ken, Incineroar (Replace K Rool with Donkey Kong in the reveal trailer)

September Direct: Isabelle

2nd Smash Direct: King K. Rool, Dark Samus, PP as Pre-Order Bonus/DLC, Belmonts

RIdley and the announcement of all past characters returning would've been satisfying enough. Echo fighters could've been properly introduced in the first smash direct with all but maybe one revealed here. This would keep fans from being too hyped (they may end up being disappointed at first, but it at least gets some of the expected reps (Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Splatoon) immediately out of the way). Isabelle's reveal remains the same because of the Animal Crossing announcement immediately after. By the time the final direct rolls around, people wouldn't expect much based on what they've seen so far, so finishing with the Belmonts would end the base roster reveal on a high note and into the Adventure mode.

It would've been a lot better than revealing the most popular characters early on and tricking many into thinking there's still one or two big names.

It's like a Wrestlemania card where all the big and/or exciting matches happened in the first half of the card, then leaving us with filler matches for the Main Event.

The overwhelming sentiment among the fanbase is that the DK as a series was sorely overdue for another character, and K.Rool was the #1 voted in the USA and Japan. The 'not relevant!' complaints would really only have been said by people that didn't like the character in the first place, and they would have complained no matter the circumstances.
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
It's weird cuz they made the exact same mistake with Brawl of blowing their load too early. That game's roster is tbh kind of incredible but IIRC they ended on fucking Toon Link and Wolf or some shit.

Then they seemingly learned for Smash 4, but now we're back to the same weird inability to manage hype that they had with Brawl.
Congrats to BKSheikah , who knows more about years than anyone else.
You know what's pretty amazing, how quickly we went from "Game Announced" to "Game Released"

I feel like there was a year and a half between the announcement and Brawl coming out, but I could be wrong.

Which is literally the argument being made in the opposite direction. No matter who was the last character, people who wanted somebody else were still going to complain.

Oooh, this is nice

thanks KP!

And yeah I think this makes a convincing case for Isaac for sure. Shadow and Skull Kid were the ones I was really skeptical of, and these results seem to bear that out. So Isaac probably should be included at some point, but the other two would be lucky to make it (Shadow a bit less so since he's an obvious Echo, but that's about it).

You don't need to make everyone happy. Just the largest number of people happy that you can. They completely failed to do this.

Honestly what likely killed Isaac's chances is that his popularity is very west-loaded. Barely breaking the top ten was his best showing in any Japanese polls.

What argument I would make in defense of revealing the best characters early is that it would be a better protection against leaks. All of those earlier reactions wouldn't have been as good if they had been leaked like Ken and inceniroar.

But Ridley and Simon were still leaked. K. Rool is the only non-echo who wasn't leaked. (Other than Inklings who were announced with the game)

The issue is that they already made a good majority of people happy with previous reveals. The issue is that those people then came to expect more, whether because it seemed like they were bending over backwards to give fan favorites, or because of leaks, whatever. So while the order may have picked up the reaction slightly, anybody saying "X isn't in it so this game sucks" is being unreasonable.

I haven't seen anyone outside of some very salty users on the GameFAQs SSBU board saying 'this character isn't in, so it sucks'. I have seen a lot of 'this roster is disappointing because the new additions suck'. A lot more than there was for Brawl or Smash 4.

Honestly I don't get what you're trying to say outside of "they made people happy with the early reveals, so it's okay if they screw up the later reveals" which makes no sense to me.

I've also seen a lot of complaints about other stuff in the Direct (specifically the story mode and the online), but that's a different discussion entirely.

It's probably that Ken is the clone of video games, even more than Luigi. Plus Shadow actually has different powers from Sonic in his game, they mostly just look alike. Don't get me wrong, though, I'd love Shadow using realistic guns and saying "Damn!"

You know something? As bad as the initial cries of "Too small! No Ridley! No Krystal! No Isaac! No Geno! No Mega Man!" were, Brawl probably had overall the most solid roster of all Smash games. They finished up the true Nintendo all-stars, added in a few cool surprises, removed most of Melee's fluff and added very little.

N64 is a close second. If you're going to pick a relatively diverse and interesting group of 12 Nintendo characters in 1998, you can't do too much better than that set.

tbqh they honestly could've just rereleased Smash 4 and I'd be happy. When a new Smash was announced my first fear was losing Shulk so I kinda wished we got a port instead... what we're ending up with is so much better.
