more news are coming out now. like CNN here:
https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/26/us/jacksonville-madden-shooting/index.html

and yes, there's video right before it happens. you can even see a laser pointer on one of the players right before the shooting, followed by plenty of audio of people running around screaming.

I just saw this a few minutes ago.
It's really sad and scary.

video of it on youtube if you want to see it as it was streaming on twitch. Nothing graphic shown, but you can clearly hear all the shots and people screaming in the background

Right before the first shot you can see a laser sight appear on the player to the right
I saw the video, that image with the laser pointing at the player is beyond disturbing.
...
I was told he got grazed in the hand and not one of the ones who's dead so he must have put his hands up before the shot went off

The one who got grazed in the hand is not the same player as the one in the clip, as far as I know. He said he was playing at the time but his name doesn't match up to either of the names of the two players in the clip. He might've been playing off-stream.

that's the reason i didn't post a link to youtube or twitter.
you can easily find it on either if you want. i haven't seen any video that's graphic, though the audio is disturbing enough that if you're squeamish, avoid it.

It was one of the top tweets when I went to Twitter because Adam Schefter retweeted it. Was audio only with camera only showing Madden after a few seconds
How horrible.

Did they catch the shooter?

omg, that is definitely disturbing just hearing the audio alone. That person who started screaming halfway through the video, I can only imagine he got hit real bad. Let's hope the fatality count isnt high. Why are there so many twisted people in this world?
Don't mind me. I'm just here for the contest.
Thats awful. There are seriously way too many shootings in the US. No intention of watching because I cant watch that sort of thing, but I can only imagine how terrible and unsettling it was for everyone
It's great that in the US you can be at any public event and it's a reasonable worry to think "i hope no one suddenly comes in here and shoots the place up"

This is so disturbing and scary. I really want to know the shooter's motives
Long live Saint Seiya!!
well, right now i know one of the motives people are gonna run with until we get more info since apparently...

http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-jacksonville-mass-shooting-20180826-story.html

The shooter was a gamer who was competing in the tournament and lost, according to Steven Steveyj Javaruski, one of the competitors.

...he was in the tournament too.
unknown whether him losing is a factor or not.

Absolutely tragic and horrible. Thoughts go out to everybody who was hurt or killed and their loved ones.

Entirely preventable, as are all future mass shootings, but nothing will be done because America.

As someone who goes to a lot of game tournaments, I see others I know saying how they might be less likely to attend them now. But like, if I wasn't at a game tournament, where else might I be going? To a concert? Shopping at the mall? Watching a movie at the theater? Going for a walk around my local college campus? It's just as likely to happen at any place I go, which is incredibly scary.

well again, there is no evidence of his loss being related to the shooting. just the facts that 1) he was in the tournament and 2) he lost. some people are immediately jumping into "he was that much of a bitch" but we still don't have a confirmed motive. just two facts that people are turning into one with that.

Jesus, the timing of that camera going away literally half a second before the first shot.
So depressing seeing someone with a smile on their face, enjoying life, and doing absolutely nothing wrong probably having their life taken from them only a moment later from an absolute and utter despicable person.

You can't go anywhere without somebody trying to score political points off of this. "Melt the guns!" "If they're white they'll make excuses, if they're not then there'll be a racist bent!" "The mall should allow concealed carry!"

Let the bodies get cold before you start this crap.
How long are people supposed to wait before talking about wanting change, exactly?

Just curious.

About the same amount of time it takes for the next mass shooting to take place.

So a day or two.

Honestly? If this was a one-off thing that happened once every few years, sure. But we have SO MANY mass shootings in this country that there's never a chance to really "wait for the bodies to get cold".

personally i don't really care how people talk about it. whether it's politicizing or joking or whatever else, sure it may be distasteful but i don't have any major issue with it in the end. for what it's worth, details are still pretty weak, expectation is tonight. all we've gotten confirmation of is that they think the shooter killed himself and he's a "white male" in the initial description. audio-wise, it sounded more like a handgun and those are plenty regulated already.
"Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel.
Christ this is awful in so many ways. There's the actual horror of everything that happened and also we're at the point now where even fucking gaming tournaments are getting shot up. Like the fact that this shit happening every couple of weeks is just pretty much the norm at this point and nobody with any power is doing anything about it is such a miserable notion.

we should immediately put all shooting victims' bodies in a freezer to minimize the time we have to wait to complain about guns

And right after this stuff happens is exactly when the gun discussion needs to happen. Getting reals fed up with the whole "wait longer" crowd. Especially because at the rate these happen these days that means it's literally never the right time.

How about not while they're still cleaning up the crime scene? Maybe give it a day or two for the police to make a statement?

the issue for debate isn't the bodies, it's the facts.
if the gun was illegally obtained there isn't much of a debate to be had unless you're against all guns. this is especially true if it's a handgun as those are more regulated than others. could try to talk about loopholes and whatnot sure but facts of the case would matter there.

all that's really accomplished is people yelling at each other about guns vs. no guns early on in these things. you could argue about things that are acceptable and things that aren't but it doesn't really relate to the shooting, that's just an excuse to argue.

It's not politicisation to say that something should be done about a persistent issue that has been solved elsewhere. It's common sense. And if we "wait" that is just assuring that nothing will be done. It's a sad fact that precautions are often put in place as a response to tragedy, they aren't going to do anything otherwise.

I think what some people are saying is, let's wait until we actually get some facts. What kind of guns were used. How did they get them. etc. I feel like being able to talk about something specific, like the stock bump debate for example, is far more effective than just talking about gun control abstractly.

Also, I know shooting are happening a lot, but the United States is huge and there are so many "public events" that go on, that it's still lightning in a bottle, powerball lottery winning bad luck to be present at a mass shooting event.

With that being said, I have noticed that over the past year or so, anytime I attend a large event with lots of people, especially when the people are all bunched together, I do have a momentary thought of "gee, I hope a mass shooting doesn't happen here". And I honestly never had those thoughts before.

I think there's room for making significant gun control changes in this country, while still keeping the right to bear arms. Unfortunately, due the politicized environment of politics these days, I don't see any real change happening soon.
Don't mind me. I'm just here for the contest.
The problem is our culture, the gun culture the country was built on.

The toothpaste is out of the tube with regard to access to guns, although people that fetishistically defend gun rights are part of the culture problem

I don't think this mindset flies when back in the age of, let's say Sandy Hook, shootings were cataclysmic events that the whole nation was shocked by - and now, stuff like that is pretty much a bi-weekly affair. Things have quite clearly changed for the worse.

https://www.massshootingtracker.org/data/2017

literally more mass shootings in one year than the entirety of powerball winners since powerball began

even using the more conservative 346 mass shooting number for 2017 that i saw elsewhere, there's like 15 more powerball winners over the entire history

that has been solved elsewhere.

The problem was never solved elsewhere. The problem never really existed elsewhere, at least not like this. America's gun problem (and that includes not just the volume of guns but the power of groups like the NRA) is too broken to fully solve imo. Something should be done, but I don't know how you do anything without punishing law-abiding citizens.

I believe the right to bear arms was a fundamental error in the first place and despise the NRA, so I'm certainly not pro-guns. And I'm not ruling out the possibility of improvement, either, but I think the ease of change here is hugely overstated.

I realize this is a bit hyperbolic, but you do realize there were 2,572 victims of mass shootings just last year alone, right. And that's only wounded/killed, that doesn't include just being present at a mass shooting event.

That's a liiiiittle bit worse than "powerball lottery winning bad luck"

Okay people, obviously using powerball was a bad example. Please reference my lightning in a bottle tidbit I said before that which everyone is ignoring.

Since everyone is so big on statistics, I wish I could manufacture the number of "public events' involving 50 or more people that occur in the United States in one year, and match that up with the amount of mass shooting incidents. I don't have those numbers, but is anyone here going to argue that that percentage is going to be anything larger than infinitesimally small?

It is quite clear that mass shooting have taken a dramatic step up in recent years and I'd love to see some gun control action taken, but is it to the point where we should be fearful of going to public events or even avoid going to any public event as some people hinted earlier in this topic? I don't think we are quite there yet.

But I do have sympathy for the victims and their families.
