the back of the Civ V box says "Internet connection and acceptance of Steam Subscriber Agreement required for activation." As does Fallout: New Vegas. I don't really mind, because the service is incredibly convenient, but it's there.
But those are newer games, and not Valve games either. People probably complained about it.
They actually likely different, and if you got stuck with it unable to play it(which would be a rare case) it's your own fault for not doing your damn research.
