just started playing 5 yesterday, first civ game ever. quickly realized that timesink doesn't begin to describe it. how long's a usual game against other people? is there some sort of saving going on? because seriously, there is no way you're fielding netplay monopoly+ amounts of time with something that has that kind of depth and not somehow cutting time by... three quarters. <_<;

well the AI i can understand, you just save and stop and then reload three weeks later forgetting what the hell you were doing. or something to that effect.

it's other people where i'm worried. eventually this seems to be the kind of game i'll enjoy enough to play with actual people and uh... well as much as i like playing games, doing it for so damn long is kinda crazy. so long as you can somehow stop-resume then it's mostly fine. just crazy long.

Me and my friend played a couple of games in Civ5 against the A.I. (LAN)
There's obviously a limit of how big you set the map, how many opponents, etc.
I think we usually started around 9, 10 pm and finished around 2-3 am.
Pretty fun, but after a while, especially if you're already in a winning position, you just try to get the turns done as fast as possible.
Also, be wary that the CIV5 multiplayer is (or at least used to be) a disgrace. Time-outs are pretty frequent so saving the game (on all computers) regularly is mandatory.

I love the game, but I only play against AI. It's already time-consuming enough against the AI.

Although maybe one day I'll bother with online. I did play one local game with my roommate, but even then that still took a while.

Also, it depends on the difficulty, how many Civs, map size. I can usually finish a game on standard (map and time) in about 5 hours.

I used to play Civ 3 with my brother for something to do when he'd come over to visit. It took us about 3 weeks or so per game (so around 9 hours), but we played on the longer game settings.

I used to play Civ 3 online right when that Play the World expansion first came out

as I recall, it was very aggressive. I like skimping on army and just making awesome cities, but these guys were in my ass within the first 20 turns or so. Back then having it balanced for multiplayer wasn't a big thing, though. you could play it online but results were mixed. it might be better now, I dunno.
