Good job SuperNiceDog
Glad they're doing this, hopefully it'll promote some mainstream awareness (and opposition) to these awful bills.

Congress shelved SOPA, but it'll be back sometime, so this is a good idea.

I may laugh at my own jokes, but I don't dare laugh at SuperNiceDog !
This is a great idea

however

I am annoyed as all hell about it. I am literally on that site at least once every day.

Anyone know if it'll possible to just back-door into the site with the IP address?

I think this is awesome. I can live without Wikipedia for a day. Hell, I think it would've been great if they had done this for longer . One day of no Wikipedia is bad enough, but imagine if they shut it down for a week.
Uncylopedia to take over.

Pretty sure Google has everything you could ever want from wiki cached on their servers so if you really need to look up something, just Google search for it and instead of going to wiki proper, access Google's cached version... It's no biggie...

more sites should be hopping in with this, I know all of MLG's sites will be down as well but I don't know any others that are getting in on it
Imagine if Facebook joined in...

God dammit. I had no idea this was happening.

Just tried to look something up and was caught unawares. Gotta admit, that's definitely raised my awareness though. Good thing I didn't have any papers to work on.

I like how it's super easy to get past Wikipedia's "blackout" by just turning Noscript on, or blocking Javascript some other way.

Makes it feel like kind of a lame blackout to be honest! They should just take down the whole f***ing site. Nobody needs Wikipedia for one day.

Looking at the list on Google's site, and there's a lot of big companies against SOPA now. If it's a matter of lobbying, SOPA may be cooked.

They did it this way on purpose.

Totally still relevant, totally not just a lurker. Totally.
Very glad they're doing this. Really hope it generates awareness. I think a lot of people have no idea about it and it literally effects everyone.

Though yeah, I wish Facebook, Twitter, or Google did this to create full awareness.
I know the Twitter CEO said it was stupid to shut down a site for a period of time just as a protest of a single dumb bill or something like that... but he's dumb I guess.

Yeah, I noticed this as well when I investigated how Wikipedia implemented their blackout. I noticed that the blackout didn't start at 12:00 AM for me, so that's when I began to suspect that they didn't use PHP to implement the blackout.

You guys are missing the point imo. Being able to get around it doesnt matter.

They just wanted to "hijack" a site to raise awareness. Once you see that black screen once, point is proven. The goal isn't to prevent you from using Wikipedia, the goal is to make you realize what SOPA will do.

This is more for the people that aren't as aware of what's going on online as we are and those people probably don't know about things like that... Or google caching... And either way, it raises awareness... I still think facebook should have joined...

Also, everyone who is "internet savvy' enough to know how to get around it is probably already fully aware of SOPA. There's a target audience here.

That is true that a lot of people who don't know what SOPA is won't know how to get around it anyway, but still I think the point could be made even more poignant if people actually shut down sites. I think this is great, but imagine how it would feel if we were actually stuck without these sites for some time. Point is, I just want to make sure that people actually feel affected by this, instead of seeing the message, going "yeah okay" and moving on.
Or people could get mad at Wikipedia for shutting down, and tell their Congressman to vote for SOPA.

--

To 95% of internet users, they won't know what to do when they see this blackout page. It is pretty much like shutting down the site. They can't just move on because they can't get to wikipedia.

I do have a paper due thursday morning but I'm way more likely to use an online library or just go to the school library before I'd use Wikipedia.

I agree but my point is that I think the very large majority of people don't know how to get around it and is effectively "shut down", though maybe I'm wrong about that, but I didn't know how to until you dudes told me.

Though I suppose they could just google it or something (but not if google did the same thing!)

I don't really know how many people use the internet but don't know how to block stuff, really. In my opinion Noscript is something that should be standard on everyone's web browser, period , but sadly this has yet to come to pass. Probably a smaller number of people know how to block Javascript than I would like.

Then again, I guess this means Wikipedia can blackout without really blacking out and I can still enjoy the privilege of using Wikipedia as normal while it's blacked out. Yay?

google will do something if they need to. but it's like an rpg - you send out the little guys, then your mid bosses, and eventually work your way to the main enemy with so much power he can crush them all at once and laugh.
