Honestly, if they started dating at 14 and 17, that's even weirder to me than 17 and 20. Like, no, if two people are a year or two apart and dating as teenagers, I don't think they should have to break up when one turns 18. But with a 3 year age difference, I question them dating at all as teenagers.
Tanthalas, I really think you're missing the big picture here. If this had been an adult comedy, and there were previous allusions to there being an issue with the relationship, and then other characters continued to rag on them for it after, a scene like this could have been a funny payoff.

However, it's a scene that has nothing to do with anything, that was forced into the middle of a children's movie, regarding characters that could have just been 18+19 and there would never have been a reason to address this or bring it up at all.

It's weird bro.
There's a time and place for everything... but not now.

Dude, she was 17 in the movie so they could make the joke.

I doubt many people watching the movie were law experts.

The only thing weird here is all the people acting like an underage couple must break-up as soon as one of them turns 18, or theyre a pedo.
I don't think anyone is arguing about Romeo and Juliet laws. They're arguing that from a meta-narrative perspective it is peculiar that Romeo and Juliet laws come up in a movie about giant robots that turn into cars.

The scene was clearly meant to be funny.

More like Michael Bay finds the idea of making the audience uncomfortable funny.

I think somebody already pointed it out earlier, but I just checked and Age of Consent in Texas is 17. So the entire premise of the joke isn't even real.

Yeah, Texas already has 17 legal so this was just completely unnecessary in so many ways. Bay really just wanted to put in romeo and Juliet laws for some unknown personal reason. Also the statute number he says doesnt match the statute number on the card. Just a completely wacky scene. It could very well be a parody but theres no indication they meant for it to not be serious since the ending ends on a serious note with Mark having his daughter shame him and leave.
