He should retire now. It would easily be the best thing hes ever done in his political career if he did so.

He just doesn't want to go out being absolutely destroyed in the primary.

Goes without saying but he needs to resign like right now.

I understand not liking Schumer generally, but I've seen no real indication that Democrats ending the shutdown is his fault, or anyone's really, other than the 8 or so centrist Dems who decided to vote with Republicans. The leaders of each half of Congress are supposed to lead their people, but they don't actually have the power to compel them to vote one way or another on anything.

Yes, just a completely wild coincidence that the Dems that voted to end the shut down just happen to be the ones most insulated from primary challengers. Not only that but if you don't want to believe that Schumer is responsible? You still have to grapple with the overwhelming incompetence of him not even being able to keep his whip in line.

No matter how you look at it Schumer needs to go. He's weak and ineffective and is completely incapable of meeting the challenge that is the modern Republican party, he's been a gross disappointment going back even to Trump's first term.

his own fucking whip was apart of this, and it was way more than those 8 democrats ready to cave, they just got together to figure out how to do this hoping they could count on American goldfish brains not remembering by the time these traitors were up for re-election, Republicans have pulled the same stunts before as well in choosing who to put themselves out there in public as screwing over people knowing they'll not only be safe for doing it but also get a nice personal favor or money for doing it and giving those private interest groups what they want.
A worthless existence

And it's strange that their votes don't reflect their positions before then. For example, Tim Kaine had already specifically criticized Thune's offer to hold a vote in the Senate as empty because it wasn't guarantee to pass and because there wasn't even a guarantee for a vote in the House.

Yet, after voting for the deal, he forgot about this and pretended holding a vote was meaningful.

Daily show had a collection of clips of them saying they wouldn't cave and even saying it would cause people to die from lack of insurance only for them to then cave and conveniently forget about all that.

Sounds like he's going to retire if it looks like he would lose a primary challenge, which as of right now maybe he would.

But either way he should retire. He is not the right kind of leader for the current times. Let AOC or someone run for that Senate seat instead.

He's either sincere when he says he opposed the deal, meaning he lacked the leadership to stop the eight from crossing the aisle to work with Republicans to strip millions of Americans of their healthcare, or he's lying and coordinated this in a way that puts the blame on the least exposed members of his caucus. Either way, he needs to be shamed and run out of town.

I think Kaines case is extreme. He caved for an offer that he had directly called empty and he even outlined the specific reasons why it was worthless.

I don't get why they want to work to such an old age
Trump is pursuing a chaotic far-right overthrow of existing US government norms and checks and balances, trying to destroy our way of life.

This. Its extremely telling that there were exactly the 8 senators needed that would be completely insulated from consequences either indefinitely or for 5-6 years u til people have likely forgotten what they did.

This is much more egregious than the usual 1-2 in the form of Joe Lieberman and Manchin / Sinema.

How much work is it? Its not like theyre there 9 to 5. They make close to $200K to just show up when theres a session and sit through some meetings every now and then. Staffers probably draft all the bills and such.

AOC was probably going to take his seat anyway. He's just retiring to save face.
That primary is gonna be a bloodbath considering how many people are gonna go for that seat

He likely planned to retire awhile back anyway, which is why he did what he did. No fucks to give, no constituents to answer to.

It's not just the money, which includes the fortunes they make from insider trading. It's the power. It's being able to get a table at any of DC's finest restaurants without reservations. It's being able to hobnob with the foreign dignitaries and industry titans. It's being able to snap your finger and have a slot on any number of prime time cable or Sunday morning broadcast news shows. It's having staffers and lobbyists and local businessmen and women kiss your ass to further their careers or secure your vote on favorable legislation.
I hope the Baileys get through to him and tell him to leave now.

Can someone in New York run for both the House and Senate at the same time? That could prevent anyone in the House, other than AOC, from even wanting to try. Unless they'd want to try to backdoor into the House general election as an independent after losing the Senate primary.

It doesn't look like there's been a contested Democratic primary for a NY Senate seat since 2010 for the special election Gillibrand won after Hillary Clinton stepped down to become Secretary of State. Clinton had a challenger in the 2006 primary. Schumer hasn't had a primary opponent since winning his seat in 1998. He had been in the House, but didn't run for reelection to go for the Senate seat, which had been held by a Republican.
I think itd be spicy if Zohran ran for that senate seat, depending on how well his mayoral term goes. Would be fascinating
