480p wasn't so bad. The menu extras were very cool also.
Come out and live with a community in a beautiful place out in the country
it was also cool seeing how much more content they could store vs VHS.
Isn't that right, Zach?

I'm not exactly thrilled that a lot of DVDs have become the de facto masters for streaming.

You know, instead of going back and getting fresh masters from broadcast tapes or LaserDiscs raw data that would be better than DVD or VHS.

I have watched a DVD as recently as yesterday.

I prefer them to blu ray, more extras on the disc and less trailer bloat to skip
I've almost never seen a Blu-Ray that has fewer extras than the DVD counterpart, and the trailer bloat is dependent on the studio. Disney from 2008 onward, for instance, is awful no matter what your disc format is. Criterion is for the most part fantastic and has only gotten better.

The good dvds are already failing after 20 years.

I hope bluray doesnt do the same shit after 20 years. My first bluray will probably turn 20yo in the next couple years

Loved DVDs and collected a ton. 480p was great in the early 2000s but a decade later I definitely prefered the higher visual quality of BD. Especially compared to streaming or ideally 4k HDR, the dull blacks, awful colour gamut, and overall blurriness are too hard to ignore now.

dull blacks
Black is black, even on a DVD. If that's not how it's appearing (to the extent that your TV can, anyway), you might have some colorspace conversion issues or a "black enhancer" setting that you should really turn off.

I had collected a couple hundred DVDs when they were the next big thing.

I loved the cleaner visuals and being able to pause without getting static and screen warping.

Fast forward twenty five years and Im too spoiled with the way HDR looks to bother with them anymore.

At least I dont have the desire to rewatch films as much now that Im older.
Let's get down to brass tacks. How much for the ape?
I'm just disappointed that we never got mini discs like in Demoltion Man. Everything went digital first.
PSP UMDs were pretty cool, just couldn't hold a ton of data

I remember when DVDs were first coming out, my mom bought dad a player for his birthday. We rented some movies from Blockbuster and one of them only had the special features on it. We figured they gave us the wrong disc, so my dad took it back up there.

When he got back, he walked in the door and immediately just said he hated technology.

It was a two-sided DVD, we had to flip it over.

"480p wasn't too bad"

Even for actual progressive scan 480p with component cables or HDMI, it was still pretty bad.

When the standard was simply being better than VHS, it was good enough. But it was clear that the format was still holding back the content.

My dad and I loved watching movies, and over the course of the early 2000s into the 2010s we collected tons of DVDs.

After he died, I inherited his movies, and the collection is probably thousands upon thousands of DVDs. It was so big that displaying them became impossible, so we started alphabetizing them into giant, 450-500 capacity cd binders. I have 6 or 7 or them on my media bookshelf. Good memories, and while streaming has become very convenient, I still watch physical media on a weekly basis.

I love DVDs still. Anyone remember anime box sets? I still have a ton of those.

I have fond memories of going into Best Buy in the early-to-mid 2000s and seeing the entire aisle they had of anime boxsets.

Bought a fair share of them, I remember always going off of the box art, looking for the very risque looking ones, because well I was a teenager and anime nudity was kind of a holy grail. Lol

they made disposable dvds you could "rent"

Oh yeah, Best Buy had a good collection. Sam Goody in the mall was a good spot too.

They're still my main method of collecting. I only get blurays if it's something that seems like it really needs better visuals or if I can find a bluray cheaper. I'm not tossing my whole collection every time a new format comes out. DVD is fine for the vast majority of movies.

I think that's one big reason PS2 sold so well

I was listening to a podcast recently where this guy went to a friend's house and he could hear this ambient sound that he recognised but couldnt quite put his finger on.

As the night went on, it was messing with his head and asked the person what it was. They weren't sure. Then he looked over and saw a PS2 in the entertainment unit and that was the sound.

He was astounded and yelled "Its the PS2!" The friend looked at him confused and she asked "the dvd player?"
Stand out, fit in
The special features was cool. My favorite was commentary. Which I still don't understand why that didn't make the jump to streaming. I don't see any reason why commentary tracks can't be added to streaming. Just select it like how you pick a dub language for a movie

On Disney+ several of the MCU films have audio commentaries. Assuming they weren't added later, then ones that had come out before Disney+ don't have them, but the ones that have come out since then include the audio commentary assuming one was made. Not sure about other movies, I just know those ones because I watched them with said commentaries.

I had no idea. Are they decent commentaries?

I think a lot of companies, especially Paramount, are going to be shocked when their tapes have also degraded.

In television preservation, the media that is most in danger of disappearing are from the 80s. That's because they switched from film to Super VHS, which degrades over time, especially each time you play it.

Even in the 80s itself, show reruns which were in heavy rotation were already looking like crap on broadcast TV. One show I watched in reruns in 1985 called "Too Close For Comfort" already had tracking lines even though it had only been in reruns on KTTV since 1982.

I enjoyed them.
I'd say they were half my childhood years (up to like 18 years old, the other half being VHS). I never thought DVDs were too impressive though I did appreciate the chapter functionality for finding specific places faster.
