I'm more surprised that no blue states have done this yet. The federal mandate is only that states can't prohibit voting rights upon turning 18 for age-related reasons, but there's nothing about it explicitly stating that states can't have lower voting ages.

And as far as I'm concerned, a cornerstone principle of the US is that there should be no taxation without representation, and 16 year olds are legally allowed to be gainfully employed and taxed as a result, so that age block should be eligible to vote as a result.
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Might not be as good as Democrats think. I could see a lot of 16-17 year old boys voting Republican, at a higher rate than 18-24 year olds. Not that many of them would vote, though.

It wouldn't bother me, but if I was given the choice, I'd leave it at 18. I don't think it would change anything, though.
"That is so fetch!"
Oh good, more people who can vote that won't care enough to.

The only way I will be cool with this is exposure to politics at a younger age and passing mandatory Civics/Government classes two years prior to the voting age. Otherwise, no.
I believe in the Golden Rule and you should too!

kids got enough to worry about already with school and dating. Leave voting to people in their 20s.
Kids would be more uninformed than some adults and possibly pressured by parents to choose a particular candidate

I dont think it would be a total disaster. I dont even worry about their maturity so much as their ability to be influenced compared to someone slightly older. Two years makes a big difference.
If not for the glaze
Yes, I agree.

Not because I think it will favour the left, but because if you can work full time and pay taxes, then you should have a say in what those taxes are used for.

And while I think that everyone should get a better education in civics and critical thinking, I would never wish to make voting conditional on passing any kind of test. We all know how that ends. Don't think 'but what if the test was fair and reasonable?', think 'but what if it was set by the White Supremacist Project 2025 goons?'.

At 16 I would have been an informed voter and thought this was a great idea. Today in my 40's I realize I'm FAR from the average person when it comes to how much I follow politics and that allowing 16 year olds to vote would likely only result in a higher percentage of the voting population not voting.

No. At that age, people lack the maturity to make informed decisions with such important consequences.

This doesn't go far enough. It should be lowered at least as far as 13.

So what? So do many people aged 18, or 48, or 88.

I went to vote yes but I think a lot of adult rules in the US don't kick in until 18.

In the UK we lowered the voting age to 16 but we was also have a lot more allowances from 16.
Ghosts are cool.
Ive posted this video every time this issue is brought up; it makes every realistic argument in favor while debunking the most common concerns.

Unfortunately there havent been many people whove expressed support for lowering the voting age when it has come up. But the reality is that even though a minor contributes their taxes [now and for years to come] and can be sentenced or serve in the military as an adult they cannot vote.

If you're old enough to be affected by laws, you should be old enough to vote.

Yes, along with high school classes to better inform them. Everyone starts off uninformed, but they need to start their journey somewhere.

Yeah sorry, but most kids in high school are not aware of politics and a lot of far right parents will just force their kids to vote Republican. If there was a poll I'd be willing to bet Republicans have more kids than Democrats too lol. Imagine the amount of meme voting for the lols.

This doesn't stop at 18. On top of that, you can't deprive people of votes just because it would benefit the other party. Considering the inciting issue of the USA was taxation without representation, it seems insane to intentionally deprive taxpayers of their representation.

Yeah, I never really thought about it before but the being able to work and pay taxes but not vote is pretty fucked up. I get the whole no being educated on politics but unfortunately I don't think enough adults are particularly knowledgeable on politics.

Yes, let's leave it to the mature ones who will not vote for a candidate who laughs...such immaturity.

The mature informed voters voted for a pedo, criminal, racist, etc.

I know a lot of teenagers who are MAGA due to still being young enough to be very influenced by their parents.

Granted, I wish could have voted against Bush when I was 16, had to wait for Obama for my first Presidential vote.

Kinda conflicted. Probably after some thinking Id be for it. I would want to hear from teenagers about how they feel.

This is a good point. That said, is this *really* what Harris wants? The 18-25 age group of today doesn't lean left.

It's a combination of Repubs getting lucky with the grifting favored algorithms and Dems failing to adapt to it. But history has precedence that they lean left. In fact, I'm pretty sure they do still lean left today, just nowhere near as they used to be in the past.

A lot of it has to do with rich asshole billionaires and tech bros being the main ones in control of social media, and of course Trump's policies favor them.

Realistically, kids who have just finished a "this is how government works" class will be significantly more informed than the average voter. Lowering the voting age to include those kids is probably not a bad idea.
Seems fair
