Nobody questions that the US is the top dog when it comes to Nuclear weapons

Not defending this but there's debate about whether Russia or the US really have more. Despite being a proven liar, it also doesn't help that Putin is constantly talking about Russian arms superiority and boasting about weapons nobody else can match, like with Russia's most recent missile and nuclear submarine tests.

And outside of nukes, there's talk about the US being behind Russia and China in terms of investment in hypersonic missiles, which renders those huge aircraft carriers as targets.

But make no mistake about it, arms races are bad.
