It sure does! GOAT movie, frfr tbqh.
You gonna do somethin' or just stand there and bleed?
I have it a perfect score on Letterboxd, one of the most gripping movies I've ever watched. It's definitely scary with good horrible creature designs but I processed it more like a thriller than something that keeps me up at night.

My biggest pet peeve regarding the plot is online arguments about (end scene spoiler) whether one of the two is a Thing at the end of the movie, when the point of the ending is clearly the irony in how the two who got along the least are now the sole survivors having won the day together

You should watch it.
You're never ever fully dressed without a smile!
It's the best movie ever made.
I didn't see this movie for the first time until 2021 and I loved it. The pacing and the way it builds tension and the growing sense of paranoia the characters are experiencing is masterful.

Carpenter's other movies are also absolutely worth the watch.

Check out

They Live
Prince of Darkness
In the Mouth of Madness

In the Mouth of Madness is especially trippy, and this fact is compound by the release of the novel this year...

Keep in mind I don't like horror or any of that stuff. I only have watched Alien, for better or worse. So... if I've already been able to stomach Alien (pun unwillingly intended) will I be able to handle The Thing?

I really want to know what That Thing is, my curiosity is burning.

Me neither besides a few exceptions and The Thing is one of those exceptions.

His movies are more Lovecraftrian horror than straight up horror. It's about making you question what's going on and giving you a sense of anxiety.

Genuinely my favorite movie of all time. It is a legit horror movie, but Ive shown it to friends that dont typically enjoy horror and they all loved it, so I think youll be good to go TC.

I really do find it astonishing how nowadays it's rightfully considered one of the kings of horror, but back then the reception was beyond inaccurate.

It's pretty unusual for a cult movie to also end up being recognized as a masterpiece decades later, I can't think of any cult hits that then went on to be widely recognized as both unappreciated in its time AND just an excellently made film. Like how the fuck did critics of the time not see it?
The Legend is True!
A lot of people think that critics weren't in the mood for an alien horror movie so shortly after ET
The shadows I live with are numberless
Fantastic movie. The practical effects are great. Itll make you wish more movies today used them instead of cgi.

John Carpenter literally went on a pivotal horror run for like 15 years. He's got the apocalypse trilogy:

The Thing
Prince of Darkness
In the Mouth of Madness

While IMO the Thing is the GOAT, all 3 are classic in their own right. He also put out 3 other IMO classic films in

They Live
Big Trouble in Little China
Halloween

Dude had a sensational run of form and The Thing is amazing.

What is your reservations against horror and by that second bold, are you implying that you felt Alien was to grotesque? If you are squeamish and thought Alien was difficult to.... stomach.... I will just say The Thing is a million times worse. It's very body horror along with it's intense atmosphere. I would tell you to... stick to it Windows, stick to it.... and watch it because it's an absolute amazing movie. Legit one of my favorites, as in I put it in my top 5 in the topic asking... but just know what you're getting into. It can get a bit gnarly.

And not how Blair gets infected?
All the iron turn to rust. All the proud men turn to dust. All things time will mend
Its a classic and I think its about time I rewatch this. Thanks for reminding me.

I love secluded area horror. Mainly space horror but this feels like space horror imo
