We got hosed, Tommy. We got hosed.

I like it, but it's actually the most overrated SNES (action) RPG.

No, that belongs to Secret of Mana. I said what I said.

Doesn't take a lot of brains to be a good fighter.

I agree fully with the latter, but I never really liked it either. I tried a number of times throughout my life to fire it up and it never could hook me.

Nah, you're right. And I say that even with the nostalgia of it being my first RPG.
...I think I'm done here...
About 9 or 10 years ago I picked up a really nice reproduction Terranigma cart to work on a regular NTSC SNES.

The official PAL english translation is a little janky. It's not NES "Engrish" bad that you see in many older games but it's not good and would of needed more localization effort to get released in the US back in the day. Also, the font is fixed width which is standard for Japanese I'm pretty sure but it looks big and blocky with a Latin alphabet script.

Seeing past those issues though you can see the masterpiece behind it. I did have a slight issue with the pacing near the end of the game where there are no major dungeons but you go all over the world progressing the story.
It was good.

I feel like it would benefit from a reimagining style of remake, IMO. There's interesting ideas in it but I feel like they could've done more with it, not helped by the janky localization.

I wonder why Nintendo did not pick it up since they released it in Europe and also Illusion of Gaia in NA.

Kamui Fujiwara (artist for Terranigma) speculated that the reason there has not been a re-release.

I don't know about Quintet, but I contacted the scenario writer and the composer (from the game) once on Twitter. I don't know about the director, Mr. Tomoyoshi Miyazaki, because he seems to have disappeared. Probably, the reason why the game has not been remade nor got subsequently sold is because Mr. Miyazaki cannot be contacted.

I played Illusion of Gaia and Soulblazer back in the 90s... is the story of Terranigma connected?

The initial rumour was that when it was being prepared for release in the States but Nintendo of America decided to shift focus to the N64 which was about to be released. Then Quintet shut down as a company so no one knew who owned the actual rights to the game. Which is weird, since we got Actraiser, which was also made by Quintet.

Yes, kind of. They're not chronologically connected, you can play one without playing the others, but they're more connected than FFs.

Played it once and enjoyed it but late in the game I seemed to get some kind of bug where bosses would barely take any damage. Not sure if my copy was bugged or if I was supposed to do something with my stats. Been like 20 years or so so I can't remember what the stats were like.

Are you talking about the Bloody Mary boss fight? I think that's about half way or a little more than halfway through the game. IIRC, and it's been 10 years since I've played it, there IS some kind of bug relating to the combat mechanics there. Instead of fixing the bug the developers just lowered her max HP or something.

I remember reading a long thread about it on the Terranigma board, I'm sure it's archived there somewhere.
I really want to do a full run of the Quintet SNES trio someday. I really liked Illusion of Gaia even with its flaws, and Ive heard nothing but great things about the other two.
I'll tell you where the real road lies: Between your ears, behind your eyes. That is the path to Paradise, and, likewise, the road to ruin.

Do it! Illusion of Gaia is the most straightforward of the three. SoulBlazer builds the towns around you as you progress in dungeons (very similar to Dark Cloud, if you've played that). Terranigma has you kind of building the world, it's very artsy and surreal.

Throw in Actraiser 1 and 2 as well.
Why be stupid? Does it make you happy to be stupid?

You just need to level up more.

There are weird breakpoints with bossdefense and xour attack value.

One more level could be the difference of dealing 1 damage with all your attacks or 10 damage.
Idk why they did that.

Only having played IoG and Soulblazer, I echo this - play both! The first had a more developed plot but the second resonated with me more emotionally (seemed a bit more sad). Plus playing Soulblazer led me to play Actraiser
