As a hunter, you would be surprised at how almost everything sounds like a squirrel out in the woods.
Some people dont follow hunting 101 rules and shoot without fully seeing their target. I could 100% see someone accidentally getting shot like this
This sounds like a case of bad luck with a ricochet shot though
