Here's the thing, bigotry is not a "difference of opinion" like anyone would claim. Hiding behind "difference of opinion", is just another defense mechanism bigots love to use to avoid owning up to their bigotry. Nothing more.

Too many times I've heard someone spouting off outright hate, and seen a seemingly decent person nod along and say "well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion"

Even I'm guilty of not responding appropriately, because I know I'll be considered in the wrong, not the bigot.

People hear fact vs. opinion explained to them and latch onto the "opinions can't be proven right or wrong part" thinking it's a clever life hack to make everything into an "opinion" so they can never be factually or morally wrong.

Or people constantly using false and wrong facts as a difference of opinion. No those things arent true and a 5 second actual thought about them would tell you that and its pathetic that the US has made it so if you question it youre just hating on somebody for different beliefs.

It's an ugly package deal:

Bigots have been very successful at getting their bigotry treated as a legitimate difference of opinion.

Willfully stupid people (creationists, anti vaxxers and the like) have been very successful at getting their stupidity treated as being worth considering.

Fascists have been very successful at getting their oppression of others treated as if it were legitimate law enforcement.

Plutocrats have been very successful at getting their greed treated as if it were good.
