one of the earliest casualties of this trend where an established series goes open-world and loses half its charm

it basically has the opposite problem as MGS4. you go hours without any story development. it's not a huge exaggeration to say most of the cutscenes were right there in the trailers. and to top it off, the game was unfinished anyway.

my entire friend group bought that game day one, and i don't think it's a coincidence that those with little/no prior MGS experience clearly enjoyed it the most
Chickens and cheese.
i wouldnt really say its open world but the open mission structure hurts the game. should have been automatic, not mission select. i love mgsV but if i liked big boss at all id probably like it less. gameplay hard carries yea

Ive played every game in the MGS timeline and I enjoyed MGSV probably more than anything else in the series (maybe other than the story in 3)

yea, I hated the mission structure.

it broke up any feeling of momentum, IMO.

there was one mission later on, iirc, where it ends on a cliffhanger, and then you start back on Pequod(?) where you can either continue to the next mission or move on to something else.
Don't you agree, Zach?

yeah for the people with little investment in the series plot they basically got a cool emergent-ish open stealth game so more power to them. also the technical performance was great which i think made a good impression, even the ps3/360 versions ran okay and were feature-complete

ftr, i love mgs, i just hate big boss specifically. im not at all invested in him or his legacy (directly)

if we line up mgs 1-4 + PW they pretty much all share the same core gameplay and emphasis on story. mgs5 is by far the odd one out there, so i think this just says you like that style of open-structure gameplay more than you like mgs.
Chickens and cheese.
i'd argue the major issue wasn't the open world but that the game was underbaked and rushed out. the open world was pretty well done honestly but with the way kojima was rushed out of the studio its obvious they got tired of his timetable and made them release whatever was done at the time.

Quando il gioco e finito, il re e il pedone vanno nella stessa scatola
I find MGSV kinda fun to play once you beat the game and can just do random side-ops just for the hell of it. It would be even better if you could do co-op with just one other person, or have custom maps for sneaking around in.
