Trump Just Released His Plan to Revoke Birthright Citizenship.

Current Events

I don't understand why people feel so strongly about birthright citizenship being good. It is a completely unnecessary provision that provides little practical value and opens up the ability for abuse.

The *only* scenario where birthright citizenship kicks in is if non-citizen parents have a child. What value does giving the child citizenship provide, when the parents don't have it yet? When the parents finish naturalizing, the child would gain citizenship along with them. It's not like the parents would return to their home country and then *leave their damn kid behind*, so why jump the gun and grant citizenship early?

The only valid use case I can think of is if the parents died before naturalizing, and now the child is somewhat in limbo. Either citizenship would need to be granted at that point, or they'd need to be sent to the foster system in the country where they do have citizenship. But this is an extreme edge case.
