It's not uncommon for HOAs to allow the community to just petition to override an existing bylaws though. I would have pushed to do that in this case but idk

I suggest watching the John Oliver Last Week Tonight on HOA's. They can legit foreclose on your house after placing liens on you until you can't pay them and lose your house. I realize some people live in some decent HOA's but you will never ever catch me ever fucking living in an HOA. Thankfully where I am in the middle of cornfields and cow pastures they don't exist. But in some of the bigger cities they do.

you're essentially signing a contract when you move into a neighborhood with one. depending on what the contract says, yes an HOA can pull shit like that. the only thing they cant do is force you to do something against local/state/federal law/code.

I'll never own a home thus I will never need to be concerned with this

But I always found the entire concept of HOA's to be stupid. They shouldn't exist. I'd gi so far to say a free society should make them illegal

On the other hand HOA's mitigate the normal problems you have with neighbors in America.

Neighbors cannot really be more reasonable elsewhere ???

It's all in the contracts that one signs when buying a house in an HOA controlled neighborhood. They can do it because you sign paperwork agreeing to let them do it.

I wish I had walked in here and you were taking a dump on the couch, or doing homework. Anything would be better than that.

A "free society" shouldn't really be in the habit of illegalizing stuff people consent to.

what normal problems though? the running theme i hear about HOA is that their primary purpose is to make sure your neighborhood looks like a carbon copy of one of those dystopian suburban 50s hellhole neighborhoods.

and you might eventually win the fight. but the HOA has been collecting fees specifically so they can fuck over people that try to fight them in court, so unless you've got thousands you're willing to blow on a throw of the dice this is probably a shit choice.

In a housing market like the US, the idea that you willingly consent to things when buying a home is a bit murky, to be honest.
