but this is just a showcase of how far gone the right to peaceful protest has gone
they probably just thought it was a regular citizen but guess we will find out the details soon

No, they knew who he was. You don't just not know the mayor of a major city. And you certainly don't keep him detained for hours. He showed up mutiple days requesting to inspect the the premises. Today they allegedly invited him inside the gates after he showed up with representatives and someone arrested him for trespassing.
